James Gunn Reveals Disappointing Update on Big DCU Movie, Casting Doubt on Its Future

The DC Universe boasts an array of upcoming films and series. Superman has already debuted to acclaim, both commercially and critically. Now, fans eagerly anticipate the arrival of Supergirl, set for release next year. Milly Alcock will headline as Supergirl, while Jason Momoa takes on the role of Lobo.

Moving forward, I’m thrilled to share that we have an exciting pipeline of projects lined up! You can expect fresh takes on iconic characters like Wonder Woman, Batman, and the Teen Titans in upcoming movies. Additionally, scripts are being crafted for Swamp Thing, Sgt. Rock, and Clayface. There’s even early planning underway for films featuring Bane, Deathstroke, and a brand new Justice League team!

Amidst all the current news headlines, it appears that ‘The Authority’ movie project might be losing some attention.

In early 2023, in January specifically, James Gunn and Peter Safran unveiled their initial lineup of DC Universe projects, and ‘The Authority’ was among them. This movie was intended to spotlight a superhero team that was originally conceived by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch.

Originally, these characters appeared in WildStorm comic books, but eventually joined the DC Comics universe. From the beginning, Gunn expressed great enthusiasm for this film, referring to it as a personal endeavor and even collaborating on its concept with other DC writers. However, by early 2025, Gunn acknowledged that the project had encountered some obstacles. The movie was characterized as being “extremely grand,” but the script development wasn’t progressing as anticipated.

As a passionate movie enthusiast, I was left feeling a tad disheartened upon hearing the latest update from James Gunn in one of his Happy Sad Confused podcast episodes. He shared that unfortunately, the writer for ‘The Authority’ has been reassigned to work on another project within the DC Universe.

“The writer moved on to another movie in the DCU that I think he’s really killing at right now.”

The future status of ‘The Authority’ appears to be undecided, as it remains unclear whether or not production on the movie will resume at all.

Initially when the film was unveiled, Gunn stated that the team comprised of heroes were those who perceived the world as irrevocably shattered. They believed the most effective solution was to seize control and rectify the situation themselves.

In an intriguing turn of words, I’d rephrase it as: “He implied they might take extreme measures, such as ‘removing leaders, toppling governments, or even causing harm to people – all in the name of making the world a better place.’ Safran likened them to Jack Nicholson’s character in ‘A Few Good Men,’ suggesting they possess a complex moral compass.

Although there’s a minor link to ‘The Authority’ in the DC Universe remaining, fans have already been introduced to one of its members in the latest Superman film. Actress María Gabriela de Faría portrayed Angela Spica, who goes by The Engineer.

As a follower of the storyline, I find myself intricately linked with Lex Luthor’s character, endowed with extraordinary abilities thanks to nanotechnology integrated within my physical form. Gunn refers to this as having an “edge.” This initial introduction in Superman’s world hinted at the potential for an Authority film. However, following Gunn’s recent update, it is uncertain whether that movie will truly come to fruition.

Currently, it remains uncertain whether ‘The Authority’ will regain its momentum or gradually fade away. Fans will simply have to stay tuned for updates.
