James Gunn Delivers Disappointing News About Flash and Aquaman’s Future in the DCU

The last time DCEU superheroes Aquaman and Flash appeared in a movie was not long ago. Ezra Miller portrayed Flash in the 2023 film “The Flash”, while Jason Momoa reprised his role as Aquaman in “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom”. Although “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” fared well at the box office, being the biggest hit since the initial Aquaman film, “The Flash” did not perform as expected.

The film received negative reviews from critics, and its performance at the theater was disappointing. A significant factor contributing to this outcome was the public drama involving Ezra Miller, which significantly impacted the movie’s popularity.

It had become evident by then that the DCEU was on the verge of being reborn as something different: the DCU. Fans are eagerly anticipating Superman’s return, marking the beginning of the live-action phase in James Gunn’s and Peter Safran’s new cinematic universe.

If you’re eagerly anticipating the arrival of Aquaman or Flash in the new DCU soon, you might need to be patient. As James Gunn mentioned on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, neither character is expected to appear within the next two years as he stated, “I wouldn’t say the next two years for either of those characters.

It’s not unexpected that Aquaman and Flash aren’t appearing right away in the new DC Universe, given that their individual films were released just two years ago and are still linked to the DCEU. It’s plausible that the new DCU wants a bit of time before reintroducing or revamping these characters.

Momoa already has a new role in the DCU as Lobo, and he will debut next year.

Despite some uncertainties, the future of the DC Universe seems promising. The latest Superman film has been smashing box office records and receiving excellent feedback. Following this, the next live-action project on the horizon is Peacemaker Season 2, a fact confirmed by James Gunn that it will continue the storyline from the Superman movie.

He called it a continuation rated R, which certainly seems intriguing for fans seeking something slightly distinct.

In the future, audiences can anticipate a “Supergirl” movie featuring Milly Alcock, slated for release in 2026. Furthermore, there are proposed plans for a new Wonder Woman film and a Batman movie titled “The Brave and the Bold.” James Gunn hinted that these projects aren’t formally confirmed as of now, but if the scripts prove successful, they could enter production sooner than other pending projects.

Although some beloved characters from the DCEU such as Aquaman and Flash are temporarily absent, the DC Universe promises innovative and thrilling content ahead. With Gunn and Safran at the helm, it appears they’re meticulously plotting each move to construct a robust, enduring cinematic universe that fans can appreciate for many years to come.
