It’s unclear who originally performed the iconic superhero landing; however, it’s widely believed that Wesley Snipes in “Blade” (1998) may have been the first. This move has since become a standard in superhero films, with Ryan Reynolds humorously referencing it in “Deadpool” (2016). Marvel’s video showcases some of the funniest instances, featuring characters like Iron Man, Captain America, Black Widow, Black Panther, Spider-Man, and Thor. Interestingly, several of these esteemed Avengers have more than one superhero landing on their resumes. As “Avengers: Doomsday” approaches, we can expect to see even more of these impressive landings. It’s possible that Robert Downey Jr., portraying Doctor Doom, might not be able to resist executing one as well.
In a fair assessment, the dramatic landing of superheroes isn’t exclusive to Marvel. Even Superman, played by Henry Cavill, has executed his own take on it. It seems that this impressive landing has replaced the iconic standing pose from the past, where superheroes would stand tall with their hands on their hips, legs shoulder-width apart, chest lifted, and a heroic gaze. George Reeves as Superman, Christopher Reeve as well, along with Adam West as Batman, and Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman were masters of this stance. Let’s hope that the next iteration of Superman introduces a fresh cliché for superhero poses – sitting down comfortably with your canine companion.
