Netflix plans to revive the 90’s eco-warrior Captain Planet, but this time as a live-action television series. Notably, the production is being handled by renowned entities such as Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions, Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way, and Warner Bros. Television, as reported by Deadline.
Tara Hernandez, a key figure behind Mrs. Davis as co-creator and executive producer, is preparing to pen the upcoming remake. The original Captain Planet and the Planeteers was an animated TV show from the ’90s that graced screens on TBS and in syndication for six seasons. This series followed the adventures of five teenagers banding together with superhero Captain Planet to tackle environmental crises.
Previously, Leonardo DiCaprio’s production house, Appian Way, attempted to create a live-action Captain Planet film. The initiative was initially launched at Paramount Pictures in 2016, with actor Glen Powell contributing to the script and potentially starring, but it never took flight. Eventually, the rights were returned to Warner Bros. Discovery.
Powell continues to be excited about the project following his triumph in Top Gun: Maverick, yet he’s not involved with this fresh series. Instead, it’s Jono Matt, who was previously associated with the initial film’s planning, contributing to its production as a producer for the new TV show.
In addition to Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson (from Appian Way), as well as Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Leigh London Redman (all from Berlanti Productions) serve as executive producers for this project. At this point, Netflix has yet to make any official comments regarding the project.
The popular animated series, Captain Planet, was brought to life by Ted Turner and was co-produced by DIC Enterprises and Hanna-Barbera. It gained widespread recognition due to its powerful environmental themes and thrilling narratives that revolved around young champions fighting to protect our world.
Greg Berlanti, renowned for crafting superhero series, notably in the DC Universe on The CW network, is now venturing into a new Captain Planet show. This marks the second major live-action revamp of a Warner Bros. animated title by Berlanti Productions for Netflix, following an upcoming Scooby-Doo origin series. Additionally, Berlanti’s company produced the hit Netflix thriller series, You.
Tara Hernandez boasts an impressive resume, having spent numerous years working on The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon. More recently, she has collaborated with Damon Lindelof in creating Mrs. Davis. Tara is currently represented by WME, while Berlanti Productions and Appian Way are under the management of CAA.
