In a discussion with financial analysts following the release of Netflix’s second-quarter earnings, Sarandos highlighted that AI tools are now aiding filmmakers in innovative ways. Instead of merely focusing on cost reduction, he emphasized that AI is about boosting the viewing experience on screen.

Netflix executive Sarandos cited an illustration from an impending Argentine science fiction series titled “El Eternauta” (The Eternaut). This series revolves around individuals battling to endure following an unexpected catastrophic snowstorm. By employing virtual production and AI-enhanced visual effects, it vividly portrays some of its key dramatic scenes.
In one sequence, an Argentine structure was depicted crumbling, reminiscent of Buenos Aires. In collaboration with local artists, Netflix employed artificial intelligence to construct this realistic image.
Sarandos stated that by employing AI-driven tools, they managed to accomplish an extraordinary outcome at an astounding pace. He further clarified that the collapse scene was completed ten times quicker compared to conventional techniques. This accelerated process enabled them to incorporate more visual effects in a production that boasted a lower budget, featured a local Argentine cast and crew.
Sarandos stated that both the creators and the viewers found satisfaction in the final product. He expressed that the creators were ecstatic with the outcome, and so were we. But what truly matters is that the audience was also pleased with the result. Thus, these tools seem to be enabling creators to explore new horizons in storytelling on screen, which is incredibly captivating.
While I’m all for embracing AI advancements in Hollywood as championed by Sarandos, it’s essential to acknowledge the apprehensions that surfaced within our creative community.
