Excitingly, I can’t help but share the news that my favorite gaming franchise, Assassin’s Creed, is stepping into the realm of live-action TV, courtesy of Netflix! This beloved series from Ubisoft is officially moving forward with its adaptation.
New Series Details
The upcoming Netflix series based on the popular video game “Assassin’s Creed” is being led by Roberto Patino (creator of “DMZ” and “Westworld”) and David Wiener (known for “Halo” and “Homecoming”). Both will serve as executive producers, with their team also including Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, Austin Dill (from Ubisoft Film & Television), and Matt O’Toole.
This fast-paced narrative revolves around a clandestine struggle between two old groups, one shaping human destiny and the other championing personal freedom. The series will trace characters through significant historical periods, depicting their struggles for dominion over humanity’s fate.
What the Creators Said
In their joint statement, Wiener and Patino expressed their long-standing admiration for the game ‘Assassin’s Creed’, which was launched in 2007. As they delve into the production of this show, they are consistently awestruck and humbled by the myriad opportunities that ‘Assassin’s Creed’ offers. Beyond the grandeur, the action sequences, and the excitement lies a foundation for compelling human narratives – tales about individuals grappling with questions of purpose, identity, destiny, and faith. It explores themes such as power, violence, love, greed, vengeance, among others.
They emphasized that primarily, this production is centered around the significance of human relationships, transcending cultures and eras. It’s also a reflection on the potential loss our species experiences when these connections are severed. We’re fortunate to have an exceptional team collaborating with us at Ubisoft and Netflix, and we’re dedicated to developing an unforgettable experience for viewers worldwide.
Netflix and Ubisoft’s Partnership
Netflix initially revealed its partnership with Ubisoft in 2020, aiming to create a universe based on the Assassin’s Creed series, encompassing live-action, animated, and anime productions. Initially, the live-action series was earmarked as the top priority. Jeb Stuart, known for his work on Die Hard, was initially connected to the project in 2021.
Peter Friedlander, who oversees scripted series at Netflix, shared: “When we started our partnership with Ubisoft in 2020, we aimed high to bring the vast, detailed universe of ‘Assassin’s Creed’ to life in unique ways. After years of close collaboration, it’s truly inspiring to see how far that vision has progressed. Under the skilled direction of Roberto Patino and David Wiener, the team has meticulously designed an epic journey that not only maintains the legacy of the ‘Assassin’s Creed’ series but also invites both long-time fans and newcomers to immerse themselves in the excitement of the Brotherhood like never before.
A Major Gaming Legacy
Back in 2007, Ubisoft introduced the highly successful video game franchise, Assassin’s Creed. Since its debut, it has sold more than 230 million copies worldwide, earning a spot among the most popular gaming franchises ever. In 2016, a movie adaptation featuring Michael Fassbender hit the silver screen. Interestingly, Ubisoft had been considering a TV series as early as 2017.
