Today, it’s common for major game releases to be sequels or fall into well-established genres, often open-world action RPGs. Yet, I yearn for developers to have the liberty to create entirely novel games like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in 2025. At the same time, I long for sequels of my cherished childhood games.
For over thirty years, I’ve had the privilege of living through a remarkable period in gaming history. From simple 2D sprites and 8-bit melodies to an era where games resemble TV shows or films, realism has become the norm. However, amidst this evolution, many exceptional games have slipped into obscurity, often overlooked over time.
On occasions, publishers deny gamers the games they yearn for, and I’m compiling a list of 20 popular games and series that fans think merit follow-ups, adaptations, updated versions, or simply new content. These aren’t ranked, but you likely have your personal ranking ready.
Banjo-Kazooie
For quite some time, I’ve maintained the viewpoint that Banjo-Kazooie outshone Super Mario 64 in overall quality. As I grow older, I understand how ludicrous that statement might seem, but my affection for Banjo-Kazooie and its sequel, Banjo-Tooie, remains undiminished. The imaginative and witty universe Rare crafted was unparalleled, boasting a surprising depth. Regrettably, Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts n Bolts barely qualifies as a follow-up, and I’m left wondering if we’ll ever witness Banjo in another genuine platforming escapade.
Binary Domain
Back when I first played Binary Domain, it seemed like just another run-of-the-mill third-person shooter. But boy, was I wrong! What I didn’t know was that this game was created by the brilliant minds at Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, who are now renowned for their Yakuza or Like A Dragon series.
I remember everyone talking about its voice command feature, which got a lot of hype… and flak. However, what truly sets Binary Domain apart is its Trust system. The way your teammates feel about you during battle can actually change based on how you direct them! This unique mechanic leads to various end sequences, making my experience with this game stand out and remain memorable.
Ridge Racer
The classic version of Ridge Racer, originally from the arcades, has made a comeback on Nintendo Switch 2 and other platforms, indicating it’s not completely forgotten. However, the last Ridge Racer game to receive significant acclaim was Ridge Racer 3D in 2011. Since then, only console releases have been Ridge Racer Unbounded in 2012 and subsequent mobile games that were free-to-play. Playing the arcade original rekindled my love for high-speed drifting races, which is why there’s a strong need for a fresh Ridge Racer game.
Syphon Filter
In its prime, Syphon Filter was a leading game in the spy action genre, but it’s been nearly two decades without a fresh installment. Before Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid graced our screens, Syphon Filter was the go-to franchise for spy action. Regrettably, there hasn’t been a new release since 2007, and it seems unlikely that this situation will improve anytime soon.
Jade Empire
Back in the day, before Dragon Age and Mass Effect took over the gaming world, Jade Empire was set to be the breakout title that put BioWare on the map – a dream project for the studio’s creators. The plan was to merge Chinese mythology and martial arts with BioWare’s signature RPG gameplay, and it certainly had its dedicated fanbase. However, over time, the game has sort of slipped into obscurity. Despite passionate fans clamoring for a sequel, I doubt we’ll ever see another Jade Empire game from BioWare again.
Sleeping Dogs
One could say that Sleeping Dogs stands out as one of the most exceptional games to emulate Grand Theft Auto’s style. While labeling it a GTA clone might seem derogatory, numerous attempts have been made, but only a select few left a lasting impression. If you’re seeking a game with staying power, look no further than Sleeping Dogs; other games like True Crime or Saints Row can be skipped over. This mafia-inspired open-world adventure, filled with cars, guns, and action, is not to be missed by those who enjoy such thrills.
Pokémon Conquest
The classic RPG series, Pokémon, is renowned for its unique appeal, yet it has only produced one turn-based strategy RPG spin-off. In the year 2012, Tecmo Koei and The Pokémon Company collaborated to create Pokémon + Nobunaga’s Ambition, which was known internationally as Pokémon Conquest. This game featured historical figures from Japan vying for control of their land through strategic grid-based combat, while utilizing Pokémon abilities. It seems this spin-off series should have continued consistently and definitely deserves a follow-up sequel.
Deus Ex
In simpler terms, the latest installments of the Deus Ex series, such as Mankind Divided, have not fully concluded their narratives, despite being well-received by critics. Mankind Divided follows on from Human Revolution, but it feels incomplete within its own timeframe. A sequel to Mankind Divided would be ideal, but even if that doesn’t happen, the Deus Ex series still warrants another moment in the limelight.
Impossible Creatures
In a slightly whimsical twist, the strategy game Impossible Creatures offers players an opportunity to blend real-world creatures into fantastical combinations. By employing Dr. Chanikov’s malfunctioned Sigma Technology, you can merge animals to create amusing hybrids such as Tiger Sharks or Tiger Scorpions – animals that may not even be tigers. This game demonstrated remarkable promise, and it could have fully realized its potential with another opportunity.
Beyond Good & Evil
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but feel a bit skeptical about when we’ll finally get our hands on Beyond Good & Evil 2. Despite the mesmerizing gameplay video and the initial awe-inspiring debut trailer, seven years have passed since then, and not long ago, a new creative director was appointed to the project. This prolonged development period is starting to feel like a sign that it may be stuck in development limbo, much like Skull & Bones. Here’s hoping that this game will break free from its development chains and grace our screens soon!
F-Zero
F-Zero is an exhilarating racing game, and it appears that Nintendo doesn’t believe another one is necessary. While Mario Kart 8 received F-Zero-themed downloadable content, the Fast series, with the latest being Fast Fusion on Switch 2, functions as a spiritual successor, but nothing quite matches up to the experience of F-Zero GX on GameCube. Not even playing the original game through emulation on Nintendo Switch Online can replicate that feeling. F-Zero 99 is enjoyable, but it doesn’t truly qualify as a new installment in the series.
Earthbound
In essence, there are three Earthbound games initially released (called Mother in Japan), but the third one, Mother 3, has not been officially translated due to challenging content, hindering its release despite hints dropped over time. Fans who have played it rave about its greatness, and while Undertale and Deltarune share a similar spirit, fans continue to yearn for an official Earthbound 3 launch and a genuine sequel by Shigesato Itoi. Regrettably, he expressed in 2013 that creating a new game would be virtually unattainable.
Vagrant Story
Vagrant Story is an exceptional role-playing game with action elements that originates from the PlayStation 1 era. This game was developed by the same team behind Final Fantasy Tactics, but offers a fresh perspective on similar themes and narrative depth. Although it doesn’t bear the name of the famous Final Fantasy series, Vagrant Story is part of the Ivalice Alliance and shares its universe with games like Final Fantasy XII, Tactics, and even the Stormblood expansion of Final Fantasy XIV.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
Collaboratively produced by Konami and Platinum Games, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance emerged as an exhilarating action-adventure centered around MGS2’s iconic cyborg ninja, Raiden. Despite its long production time, this game solidified the skill of the Platinum team in the character action genre. It remains a game worth playing today and undeniably warrants a sequel.
Bloodborne
Bloodborne is a game that Sony seems proud to own, yet reluctant to develop further. Despite this, there’s an obvious enthusiasm among gamers for a new entry, update, or port of the game. Admittedly, it would require significant resources and development time, but considering the excitement it could generate, it might be worth the investment. In fact, it could surpass nine out of ten of Sony’s recently announced games in terms of anticipation. Therefore, whether it’s a sequel, a remake, or a port, fans are eager for Bloodborne to return to the gaming scene.
Bully
It’s likely that “Bully,” which resembled Grand Theft Auto but was set in a school environment, may not be released in 2025. In this game, you played as the antihero of the school, engaging in various mischiefs while striving for good grades.
Elite Beat Agents
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but sing praises for these top-notch agents who always keep the rhythm in check. In the land of the rising sun, this musical adventure is famously called Ouendan, and it even spawned a sequel. My heart skips a beat at the thought of seeing Elite Beat Agents (EBA) and the Ouendan series united on the Switch 2 in a fantastic compilation, with a worthy successor in development for future enjoyment. If you’ve danced to the rhythm of games like Rhythm Heaven, then you’ll understand the sheer brilliance of Elite Beat Agents. Should EBA receive a new installment on the Switch 2, I have no doubt that it too will find its place among gaming history!
Titanfall
Titanfall 2 boasts one of the best single-player and multiplayer shooter experiences ever created, with an incredibly steep learning curve and immense replayability. Simply put, Titanfall is an exceptional series that we adore. While we appreciate Apex Legends, it can’t compare to the greatness of Titanfall, and it never will be. If Electronic Arts were a fair publisher, they would allow Respawn Entertainment to develop Titanfall 3.
Skies of Arcadia
The enchanting role-playing game titled “Skies of Arcadia” initially graced the Dreamcast console, then received an improved version on GameCube. Ever since, it’s been absent from our gaming screens. The vibrant realm of Arcadia, a world filled with skyborne pirates navigating their ships across disconnected floating islands, left a lasting impression. Its narrative was equally captivating. This unique universe belongs to the rare breed of classic RPGs that have never reappeared.
Half-Life
2020’s Half-Life: Alyx was an impressive comeback in the Half-Life universe, yet fans yearn for a genuine successor. There are whispers that Valve is developing one, but when can we expect it? Will there even be a release? Or will Gordon Freeman’s rescue mission of City 17 remain unrealized? For those who love Valve, this post hints at Portal, Team Fortress, and Left 4 Dead as well.
