Why Rigetti Computing Stock Is Skyrocketing Today

On this Thursday, stocks for Rigetti Computing (RGTI) are experiencing a significant rise. As of 1:38 p.m. ET, the company’s stock price has surged by approximately 28.9%. This surge occurs amidst the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite indices remaining relatively stable.

The trailblazer in the field of quantum computing recently declared they have reached an important breakthrough in their quest to make quantum computing practical for businesses.

Rigetti says its “gate fidelity” has improved

The organization declared that they attained a “99.5% median two-qubit gate precision” on their modular 36-qubit system, indicating they’ve reduced their error rate by half compared to their previous best. Gate errors represent a significant challenge for quantum computing to become practical beyond the lab setting. Although 99.5% accuracy appears impressive, a classical computer’s error rate is significantly lower by several orders of magnitude.

Rigetti has a long way to go

Although it’s progress indeed, I have the feeling that investors might be overly enthusiastic. Companies like Rigetti and others in the quantum field are diligently working to bring about groundbreaking technology at the cutting edge of science. However, it seems plausible, despite assurances from these companies’ leaders, that we could be a decade or more away from practical commercial application on a scale warranting such investment.

If you’re an investor who can handle significant risk and are willing to wait over a decade for returns, Rigetti might be one of the top quantum computing stocks currently available. Yet, it’s advisable to diversify your investment across various quantum stocks. The technology is still in its infancy, making it uncertain which company’s strategy will succeed. Moreover, there’s always a possibility that the technology may never advance to practical application.

From my perspective, I find that the current market prices for companies like Rigetti and others in the quantum tech sector are a bit steep, considering where the technology stands in its development phase. It’s an exciting field, no doubt, but it’s crucial to keep the progress in perspective before making investment decisions.
