In Umamusume, the main gameplay centers around its career mode, and the URA Finale serves as the initial significant storyline. Here, you’ll learn the basics, experience setbacks, and ultimately help your trainees reach greatness. However, some of the game’s complex mechanics aren’t fully explained by the tutorials, making it challenging to understand how to proceed effectively.
Here are some fundamental guidelines for newcomers to Umamusume, helping you effectively encourage the aspirations of your apprentices.
Pick the right Veteran Umamusume and Support Cards
Kicking off the game, you’ll initially have a limited number of Veteran Umamusume and Support Card options, but it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with their roles.
At the onset of your game, you have the option to select two seasoned Umamusume at the start of your race. These veterans will transfer some of their attributes, abilities, and talents to the novice Umamusume. Make sure to choose veterans who provide beneficial advantages to the trainee, such as stats and skills that complement her running style.
You should opt for cards that offer advantages and abilities tailored to your preferred playstyle. Each card offers narrative occurrences, stat increases, enhancements to Mood and Energy, and potential discounts on skills.

Keep the Trainee’s Mood up
As a racing enthusiast, I can’t stress enough the significance of one’s mood in career mode. A Trainee with a Good or Exceptional mood not only gains extra stats from each training session but also performs admirably during races. Conversely, if my Trainee is feeling Awful or Poorly, their growth stagnates and race performance suffers.
Regardless of how Mood fluctuates due to certain incidents, you can consistently enhance it by utilizing the Recreation feature, which requires one turn. It’s advisable to strengthen your Trainee’s Mood at the onset of gameplay, as the benefits accumulated from this action will increase progressively throughout the game — an excellent method for maintaining a positive growth trend.
Build Friendships and level up training
As a gamer, I find myself concentrating on boosting stats that align with my Trainee’s unique playstyle and tactical approach during the early stages of the game. However, when I reach the Junior Year, I take advantage of this phase to cultivate friendships instead.
When deciding which stat to develop, you’ll notice various character icons appearing on the right side of the screen. These characters represent those summoned by your Support Cards. On a rotating basis, they will join different training sessions each turn. Training alongside these characters can help strengthen their friendships with your Trainee.
As a gamer, I’ve found that boosting the friendship between my characters and my trainee unlocks something extraordinary – the Friendship Training, which offers enhanced stat bonuses. To level up rapidly, it’s smart to concentrate on training sessions with the most characters participating. Once we’ve hit maximum friendship, I can then dedicate time to honing those crucial stats.
Similarly, you ought to understand that training categories can progress or advance. Once you’ve finished four rounds of any specific training category, it will move to the next level, providing you with extra benefits in every session. It’s important to prioritize advancing the key training categories for your Trainee initially.
Manage Energy carefully
During exercise, energy is used up, with the exception that boosting Wit slightly replenishes some energy. If your trainee’s energy dips below 50%, her training sessions might fail. This is problematic because it not only squanders a turn without any stat improvements but also increases the risk of injuries and potential stat decreases.
Whenever the likelihood of failure surpasses 20%, it’s wise to allow my trainee a well-deserved rest during their turn, ensuring they have the energy to perform at their best. In the realm of friendship training, I am willing to take the risk of potential injury, as the rewards are truly invaluable and worth every effort.
It’s important to ensure that your trainee is well-rested before the Summer Camp during both the Classic Year and Senior Year. Boosting her mood to an optimal level is also crucial. The Summer Camp offers particularly intense training sessions, so it’s best to avoid spending time on leisure activities during this period to make the most of your valuable time.
Participate in races to earn Skill Points
Developing skills is crucial for your Trainee to excel in her primary career events; however, there are numerous additional competitions you can enter throughout the year. While it’s essential not to overexert yourself, since participating in too many races may consume resources and cut into training time, it’s advantageous to participate in a few other contests. Success in these competitions will grant extra experience points and valuable Skill Points.
You can invest these resources into acquiring various skills. The specific skills that become accessible to you will depend on the trainee, veteran Umamusume, and support cards you select.
Participating in races is beneficial because it allows you to evaluate the effectiveness of your training. If you don’t perform well, it can help pinpoint the aspects that require improvement. Moreover, winning races rewards you with trophies and resources to enhance your Umamusume’s abilities.
In summary, gathering fans for your Trainee Umamusume increases their Fan Tier, which is essential because accumulating a particular number of fans during specific periods of the year grants additional benefits.
As you embark on your initial career mode experiences, remember these points as they’ll soon become common sense. Once that happens, feel free to delve deeper into intricate aspects such as crafting an optimal Support Card deck.
