Viewership for the hit TV series “9-1-1” significantly surged following the emotional demise of a central character in Episode 15 during Season 8. The episode attracted a cumulative audience of approximately 8.45 million viewers across ABC, Hulu, Disney+, and various digital streaming platforms.
This episode has become the most viewed since the season started, as per the seven-day delayed ratings by Nielsen.
On April 17th, viewers witnessed an unexpected turn of events as the character Bobby Nash, portrayed by Peter Krause, met his end. This dramatic scene sparked much conversation among fans online. Notably, this series hadn’t previously written off one of its primary characters, making this plot twist a significant surprise.
The latest episode garnered a significant boost in ratings among adults aged 18-49, climbing from the previous episode’s 1.57 to 1.74, marking an impressive 11% increase. Additionally, it attracted slightly more total viewers compared to Episode 14, with a viewership of 8.43 million, representing a modest 2% rise.
5.64 million people watched the ABC episode, which is a significant increase of 48% compared to its initial viewership during the live broadcast (3.81 million). Additionally, the rating saw a substantial growth of 56%, rising from 0.36 to 0.56.
The viewership through streaming platforms was exceptionally high. In fact, it was the largest 9-1-1 audience since the season debut back in September, with viewers tuning in via Hulu as well as Hulu on Disney+.
Tim Minear, the show’s creator, revealed why they chose such a daring decision: “Bobby is the character with the most significant impact… it was logical on all fronts,” Minear shared with TheWrap.
“The series required a crucial character death for viewers to understand that there were genuine risks involved in each case.
He also mentioned that as we move to Season 9, this death is likely to increase the suspense: “In the upcoming season, you may find yourself clutching the arms of your seat more tightly due to the tense situation our characters will be in.
In this week’s Episode 16, the team is seen uniting to pay their respects for Bobby. The finale of Season 8 of “9-1-1” will be Episode 18, set to air on May 15th.
The program keeps getting broadcast every Thursday at 8 p.m., Eastern and Pacific Time, on ABC. You can find it streaming the following day on Hulu.
