8 Most Crucial Plot Points From House of the Dragon Season 2

As a seasoned fan of the Targaryen dynasty, I find myself utterly captivated by the latest developments in House of the Dragon. The intricate tapestry of power struggles, alliances, and betrayals unfolds with such precision that it feels like reliving the Dance of the Dragons all over again.

In the second season of House of the Dragon, events unfolded amidst flames and bloodshed, fueled by the Targaryen civil war. From the tragic death of Haelena’s son at the hands of Prince Daemon’s allies to the breathtaking aerial battle between Vhagar and Meleys above Rook’s Rest – these pivotal moments in season 2 extend beyond the expected timeline.

Despite the finale bringing about a split in fan opinions, it has ignited discussions regarding the intent behind Season 2 and an unsatisfying ending. Some praised the political undertones of the series, while others expressed disappointment over the prolonged prelude to the war, leaving fans with a wait of at least two years to finally see its resolution.

Ryan Condal’s response as Showrunner to the criticism eased viewers’ concerns, stating that Season 2 was a crucial step leading up to the Dance of the Dragons, an event promised to unfold in the upcoming season. Let us reflect on the significant milestones from House of the Dragon Season 2.

8. Prince Aemond avenges Prince Lucerys Velaryon’s death

In the second season’s unfolding, I found myself immersed in the first and undeniably gruesome episode, which delved deeply into the tragic tale of a son for a son. The previous season concluded with a chilling cliffhanger as Prince Aemond, unwillingly, reduced Prince Lucerys and his dragon to fragments.

In my role as a loyal follower of Prince Daemon, I recount his thirst for violence, which led him to dispatch two allies, named Blood and Cheese, on a covert mission to King’s Landing. Skirting past the Red Keep and infiltrating the palace, their objective was revenge for the demise of Prince Luke. Upon reaching King Aegon’s heir, Prince Jaehaerys, they were swiftly apprehended. The queen, Haelena, who is both mother and sister-wife to the king, identified the baby, leading to the grim consequence of Blood and Cheese meeting their end by decapitation.

7. Queen Alicent realizes the doom she brought upon the Targaryens

In Episode 3, titled The Burning Mill, Queen Rhaenyra ponders a desperate plan prior to going into battle. She secretly visits King’s Landing and manages to engage in a significant discussion with Queen Alicent, who is deep in prayer at the church.

Rhaenyra makes an effort to take into account Alicent’s comprehension of King Viserys’ last utterances, as they both aim to avoid the approaching conflict. It occurs to her, the legitimate queen, that her father was quoting a hidden tale, the Prince That Was Promised, which is typically shared only among heirs.

In a nutshell, Alicent, burdened by her uncertainties, decides to run away, whereas Rhaenyra, satisfied with her father’s final decree, stands ready to battle for her deserved position on the Iron Throne.

6. Criston Cole betrays his King

From the outset, Criston Cole and Aemond ridiculed King Aegon’s perceived weakness in intelligence. Consequently, they devised their own plan, leading to the cunning maneuver during the Battle of Rook’s Rest that ultimately resulted in Rhaenys’ demise.

However, Cole confronts the truth of Aemond’s wickedness as he discovers King Aegon charred and injured by Vhagar. He recognizes the turmoil he has caused by supporting the Regent’s schemes in his petty quest for a noble standing in King’s Landing. Now, the Dornishman cannot ignore the situation anymore.

5. Rhaenys dies in battle

A key figure in Queen Rhaenyra’s fight for power, The Queen Who Never Was, Rhaenys sacrifices her and Meleys’ to the Battle of Rook’s Rest. The bloodshed has agitated Dragonstone and Rhaenyra sends her most experienced rider Rhaenys.

During a battle, Rhaenys bravely fought against Criston Cole and his troops by herself, revealing Aemond’s malicious plan to murder his brother. Meleys (Rhaenys’ dragon) and she continued fighting fiercely even when they were caught off guard and attacked by King Aegon’s dragon Sunfyre and Prince Aemond’s dragon Vhagar. This battle resulted in a significant death, which ultimately helped strengthen Queen Rhaenyra’s position.

4. Rhaenyra hires new Dragonriders

In simpler terms, Rhaenyra is deeply immersed in the history of House Targaryen and ponders the single viable strategy to win the conflict. She appeals to commoners who have a trace of Targaryen ancestry or Valyrian heritage to seize dragons and join forces with her faction, the Blacks.

In Episode 7, The Red Sowing, Lord Corlys’ illegitimate son Addam of Hull, along with Targaryen siblings Ulf and Hugh, join the fray and successfully drive off formidable opponents Aemond and Vhagar.

3.  Daemon’s hallucination about the future

The HOTD Season 2 finale directly ties its links to the Game of Thrones with a hallucination about Queen Daenerys. By now, Daemon’s internal struggles are established with the constant hallucinations during his time at Harrenhal.

In the final scene, Alys guides Daemon towards a haunted tree to help clarify who should ascend the Iron Throne legitimately. Upon touching it, Daemon experiences intense visions of the past, future, and a brief peek at Daenerys frolicking with her dragons.

In my perspective as a lifestyle guide, I found myself staring at the majestic presence of Queen Rhaenyra adorned with the iconic Iron Throne’s crown. It struck me then, like a revelation, that she was the one destined for this role – the one who could unite the kingdom in harmony.

2. Dowager Queen Alicent seeks Rhaenyra

Rhaenyra has flipped the script against her adversaries by recruiting fresh Dragonriders to tame the dragons discarded at Dragonstone. This newfound power has left the Greens uncertain, prompting Queen Alicent to visit Dragonstone for a crucial last talk before the impending war.

Allicent proposes that Queen Rhaenyra should ascend the Iron Throne, while Aemon and Vhagar depart for Harrenhal to avoid conflict. However, he is hesitant and expresses regret towards Allicent for instigating a war due to her misinterpretation of the situation and unwavering loyalty to a potential usurper’s son.

In the season finale, as a devoted supporter, I quote Rhaenyra saying, “A son for a son.” She implores me, Alicent, to willingly relinquish my son, Aegon, for the greater good. With a heavy heart, I reluctantly agree, expressing hope for a life of tranquility, and even suggesting that Rhaenyra escape with me.

1. Daemon succumbs to his oath

During King Viserys’ rule, everyone in King’s Landing and other stakeholders had sworn allegiance to Queen Rhaenyra. However, after King Viserys’ demise, the existing order was thrown into turmoil.

King Aegon seizes the throne from her, while it’s rumored that Prince Daemon is amassing troops at Harrenhal with intentions of claiming the Iron Throne for himself. All through the season, Alyss, a sorceress, torments him with nightmarish visions.

In the final episode, titled “The Queen Who Ever Was,” Queen Rhaenyra heads towards Harrenhal to confront Daemon and his secretive activities. Despite her recent dragons, Rhaenyra hopes for assistance from her fiancé, Prince Daemon.

The King’s consort secretly devises a cunning strategy to seize the throne, displaying a noble act by kneeling before Queen Rhaenyra in front of his vast army that he meticulously assembled. This move significantly increases the chances of the Black faction prevailing in the “Dance of the Dragons,” continuing the storyline in Season 3.
