In many anime series, moms often play a secondary role, but they are crucial in influencing the development of the main characters. While some parents in anime may seem irresponsible or absent, there are exceptional mothers who stand out. Who are these remarkable moms in anime that go beyond the stereotypical “shounen mothers” who allow their children to do whatever they want? Let’s explore and discover them together.
50. Effa (Ascendance of a Bookworm)
Maintaining a positive demeanor can be challenging when life appears to be stacked against you, especially if you’re a parent like Effa from this series. Her daughter Myne, our central character, was often confined to bed due to an illness that left many puzzled. Despite her own concerns and hardships, Effa displayed remarkable resilience for the sake of her kids. She continued to smile and care for her daughters while also juggling her role as a seamstress to ensure their family’s needs were met.
49. Acier Silva (Black Clover)
In the anime, Acier appears infrequently, yet her impact on Noelle is frequently discussed. Noelle, who was shunned by her family due to being blamed for her mother’s demise, found solace and motivation in the tales she had heard about her mother.
In times past, Acier was an exceptional knight with magical prowess that surpassed Mereoleona of House Vermillion, who mentored many characters within Black Clover. Acier’s renowned Steel Magic inspired Noelle to discover her full potential as a Magic Knight and continues to guide her through the relentless struggles she encounters in the story.
48. Mio (Dororo)
Among the most poignant scenes in Dororo were those featuring Mio, a young girl who lived in a deserted temple caring for orphans who had lost their parents during the war. Although she was just a child herself, her selfless assumption of responsibilities and the sacrifices she made on behalf of these children are truly commendable, even though they evoke great sadness.
Mio risked her life every day by assisting both feuding factions. She gave up her self-respect and wellbeing for the welfare of the orphans, even though she may consider herself “Dirty” due to this, Hyakkimaru and we, as spectators, regard her as nothing but spotless.
47. YuiYui (KonoSuba)
Fans eagerly anticipated if Megumin’s hometown indeed brimmed with eccentric, power-wielding individuals like her, given her lovable yet peculiar nature. Indeed, it did, and the humor in this depiction is simply delightful.
Megumin’s mother, YuiYui, embodies perfectly the characteristics of a Crimson Magic Clan mother: she is compassionate, diligent, and somewhat eccentric. Upon discovering that Kazuma was in fact wealthy, she employed her Sleep spell on everyone in the house, locked Megumin and Kazuma in a room to give them privacy (you can guess what for). This led to some amusing situations, so long live the clever matchmaker YuiYui!
46. Midori Nendou (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.)
Actually, Riki’s mother does bear a striking resemblance to him, not just a wig trick. It’s unusual to find Midori Nendou on this list, but once you consider her background, it’s clear why – she’s truly remarkable. At the tender age of 15, she gave birth to Riki, and when her husband passed away, she single-handedly raised him.
At one point, Midori was wedded to Nakanishi Kouta, who later gained fame as a magician, but their marriage dissolved after he lost his job and turned to alcoholism. In essence, Midori had a child as a teenager, endured the loss of her spouse, navigated a broken marriage with an alcoholic, and is now raising her son singlehandedly. If her resilience doesn’t command our admiration, I’m unsure what would.
45. Holly Kujou (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 3: Stardust Crusaders)
In Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, the Joestar clan seems to constantly attract misfortune, much like an overly clingy companion. Fortunately, each male character in this series is a muscular and extraordinarily powerful alpha male who appears oblivious to the fact that once killed, one should supposedly stay dead. Being a mother in this family means setting a high standard, yet simultaneously lowering it because the Joestars are remarkably self-sufficient.
Holly isn’t the kind of mother who resorts to physical discipline for unfinished tasks, instead, she showers you with an abundance of affection. Her demeanor is always bright, relaxed, and full of encouragement towards her son Jotaro, even in the face of his harsh words.
44. Kanata Izumi (Lucky Star)
Regrettably, we only encounter Kanata in a single episode of the anime series. However, this solitary appearance left a deep emotional impact on us as we empathized profoundly with Konata and her father upon learning about their family’s loss. Despite having a minor role, the scene where Kanata jumps to capture a photograph with her spouse and daughter is so heartwarming that it seems unfair not to include her in this compilation.
43. Nana Komatsu (Nana)
It’s widely questioned whether Nana would make a good mother due to her often immature and innocent behavior. This led to concerns as she stepped into the parental role.
In one way or another, Nana acknowledged her imprudent side. She understood that she couldn’t bring up a child on her own and needed someone capable of supporting them. Thus, she opted to relinquish her future with Nobu for a more stable, yet solitary existence with Takumi. Although this wasn’t the preferred outcome for fans, it was the most sensible choice Nana could make as a mother.
42. Shizue Satou (Welcome to the NHK)
In many animated series (anime), there are quite a few characters who seclude themselves, often referred to as Hikikomoris. This isolation typically stems from experiences like bullying, social fears, or a lack of drive. The way family members handle such situations can significantly impact the person’s chances of overcoming their condition.
In my perspective, Shizue Satou is managing this challenging situation remarkably well. Though I can sense her concern for her son’s health and recovery, she refrains from pushing him to alter himself. Instead, she treats him with the same respect and normality she would any other person, avoiding any victimization.
It’s challenging to let your child navigate their own decisions and face struggles independently, but how Shizue handles Tatsuhiro’s isolation, offering both emotional support and firm guidance, truly showcases her exceptional motherhood skills.
41. Satou Matsuzaka (Happy Sugar Life)
Is Satou mentally unstable? Indeed, she is. Is she a wrongdoer deserving of eternal imprisonment? That’s correct. However, it could be argued that she exhibits qualities of a compassionate and nurturing parent.
If you haven’t had a chance to watch the series yet, congratulations! You’re missing out on an intriguing storyline. The protagonist is Satou Matsuzaka, a high school girl who temporarily cared for a child named Shio after taking her into her care.
Satou’s affection for Shio is intense, borderline harmful at times. Yet, she consistently demonstrates that she would go to any lengths to protect and stay with Shio. Moreover, she conceals her overly protective side from Shio, acknowledging her own instability, while continuously showing her love.
40. Mamako Oosuki (Okaasan Online)
Picture this scenario: The awkward sensation that strikes when your mom unexpectedly enters the room while you’re gaming with pals. Now envision being transported into that game and having the opportunity to redefine yourself, yet your mother is still present. That would be quite an uncomfortable situation, wouldn’t it? Yet, it’s hard not to appreciate Mamako. She’s adorable, compassionate, remarkably naive at times, but surprisingly mature as well. And oh, she’s also incredibly powerful!
In the digital realm of Okaasan Online, the anime isn’t particularly impressive overall. Yet, there’s one standout character that shines: the mother figure, Mamako. Her unwavering love and support for her bratty son, despite his spoiled behavior, is commendable (though it would be amusing to imagine her giving him a stern two-hit reprimand).
39. Hinata (Naruto)
If Hinata had been in love with Naruto since the very first episode of the series, maintaining her affection for him consistently over approximately 700 episodes until he returned her feelings, one can only imagine the deep affection she holds for her children.
Originally, Hinata was a beloved character from anime, often referred to as a ‘waifu.’ Now that she’s a mother, it’s only fitting that she excels at this role. She not only looks after her own Naruto but also Boruto and Himawari, who can be quite challenging. To make matters more complicated, Naruto, as Hokage, was seldom home, leaving Hinata to raise the children on her own.
38. Nanako Hasegawa (SK8 the Infinity)
Langa Hasegawa shared a deeply bonded relationship with his father. It was his dad who taught him the skill of snowboarding, something Langa absolutely cherished. This made it all the more challenging for Nanako to step into the role vacated by her husband’s passing.
For a significant period, Nanako found herself struggling, unsure of how to aid her son or lessen their shared grief. Frequently, she would worry excessively upon seeing Langa come home hurt, fearing he had been victimized by bullies. Despite these concerns, Nanako takes great pride in her son and frequently shares stories about him with her coworkers.
37. Leonora Nakiri (Food Wars)
It’s interesting to note that parents appear frequently in the anime series Food Wars, a characteristic not commonly found in many other anime shows. These parents not only serve as parents to our principal characters but are also skillfully crafted characters in their own right.
In the series Food Wars, it’s Leonora Nakiri who steals the show as the charming yet revered mother figure. She is not only Alice’s mom but also Erina’s aunt. With her stunning beauty and brilliant mind in culinary arts, she exudes an aura of authority that leaves you awestruck. However, once she begins speaking Japanese, her charm becomes undeniable.
Her peculiar accent and faulty grammar often provide amusing material, until she savors something delightful. At such moments, she suddenly speaks flawless Japanese. It’s a mystery how this happens, but it certainly adds to the humor.
36. Yuriko Gouda (Ore Monogatari)
In the anime world, Takeo Gouda from Ore Monogatari is widely recognized for being one of the most affectionate male leads. A significant part of this aspect can be attributed to the impact of his mother, Yuriko.
Typically, when a character’s kindness is being emphasized in a show, they might be shown feeding a cat or assisting an elderly person across the street. However, Yuriko demonstrated her selflessness in a remarkable way – by helping a pregnant woman reach the delivery room, even though she herself was also expecting. Chivalry indeed!
35. Lilya (Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation)
In Mushoku Tensei, it’s clearly Zenith who first catches our attention. Yet, as I delve deeper into the story, Lilya, Paul’s second wife and maid to the Greyrat family, emerges as a mother of great dignity and diligence. She skillfully instills in her child the values of respect and hard work.
During her swordsmanship apprenticeship, Lilya learned the virtues of self-discipline and understanding one’s role. These lessons she then imparted to her daughter Aisha and also to Norn, who was both a stepdaughter and a student under her tutelage.
34. Reiko Ichinose (Piano no Mori)
Before Kai’s arrival, Reiko’s life was undeniably tough. Working in the Red Light district wasn’t easy when she was just looking after herself, but adding the responsibility of raising a child to that environment presented an entirely different set of difficulties.
Her neighbors seldom supported her, often labeling her as an unreliable and unethical mother. Furthermore, Kai, her son, frequently encountered children mocking and demeaning him due to her profession. Nevertheless, or perhaps because of the constant hardships they faced together, Reiko consistently maintained a strong bond with her son.
33. Miyako Ishida (A Silent Voice)
Discovering your child is a school bully and choosing not to physically punish them requires immense self-control and patience – qualities crucial for any single parent raising their kid effectively. At times, an overabundance of kindness can lead to feelings of guilt that might be harder to conquer than just giving a spanking.
At a particular moment, Shoya contemplates taking his own life, yet Miyako’s actions underscore why she is an exceptional mother. Not only does she prevent her son from carrying out this action, but she also quashes any future inclinations he might have had towards something as irrational as self-destruction.
32. Isabella (Promised Neverland)
In a realm where demons vastly outmatch humans in strength, acts of kindness may assume forms beyond our common understanding. It’s challenging to transform a woman who nurtured her children for the purpose of sacrificing them to demons, but such a world might require unusual expressions of compassion.
In essence, Isabella serves as a caretaker within a children’s home known as Grace Field House, which harbors a chilling secret. Despite the house’s grim reality, it’s hard not to acknowledge that Isabella did everything in her power to nurture these kids, and they all held deep affection for her. Being an orphan herself at one of those institutions, she understands the futility of attempting escape, so she focuses on providing love and care instead.
Rather than persisting in what seemed like a hopeless struggle, Isabella chose to focus on making her children’s lives as happy as possible, given their limited lifespans.
31. Naoko Natsuki (Re:Zero)
Prior to Season 2, Naoko was not developed beyond an idea for us to understand. Previously, Subaru’s parents were depicted as caring and permissive. They didn’t scold him when he chose to drop out of school, instead showing faith in his ability to make wise choices independently.
Beyond this, his mother was portrayed as remarkably unperceptive, often failing to recognize the depth of Subaru’s suffering. It’s during the second season where emotions really intensify. We delve deeper into Naoko, witnessing her compassionately guide her son through the desperate predicament he encounters.
30. Emi Handa (Barakamon)
In a brief period, Emi Handa has effortlessly won ours hearts with an outstanding “ora ora” punch, rivaling those seen in Jojo’s. Despite her sugary appearance, she is quite impetuous and often communicates her feelings via her fists.
One adorable aspect of their relationship is that although he can skillfully avoid her bursts of anger, he occasionally yields to her when his actions inadvertently trigger her reactions.
29. Yasuko Takasu (Toradora)
Initially, Yasuko’s immature demeanor and youthful looks might make you think she’s Ryuuji’s sibling rather than his mother. However, as the story unfolds with a more serious tone, we discover that Yasuko is surprisingly mature and responsible.
Despite Ryuuji showing a high degree of responsibility, she insists on being the one to support them both. She acknowledges her past errors and wishes for her son to enjoy his youth without the hardships she’s endured. Yasuko mirrors the show’s tone beautifully – captivating with its humorous, offbeat moments, yet gripping with its sudden, dramatic twists.
28. Carla Yeager (Attack on Titan)
In the opening episode of Attack on Titan, Carla Yeager’s presence significantly amplified the impact. It might seem unusual given that she meets her end in that same episode, but her ability to captivate viewers within the first 20 minutes of the anime was so powerful that her death became a poignant moment for us.
As the narrative unfolds, there are moments when we’re given glimpses into the past, serving as poignant reminders of the sorrow we initially experienced, and often deepening it because they offer additional insights into the tenderheartedness of Carla.
27. Kushina Uzumaki (Naruto Shippuden)
Comparing the characters of parents with their children, such as Naruto’s mother Kushina, offers a delightful experience. Just like Naruto, Kushina was known for her spontaneity, outspokenness, determination, and she had her own unique catchphrase, “dattebayo” or “dattebane.
As a die-hard movie fan, I can’t help but draw parallels between the selfless acts of characters in films and the unforgettable sacrifices made by Kushina and Minato in the Naruto series. Just like a heroine who puts her child before herself to save them from danger, Kushina prioritized her son, choosing to give up her life to protect him from the rampage of the Nine-Tails.
And then there’s Minato, Naruto’s father, whose actions echoed a scene straight out of a drama. Many speculate that he could have survived the attack on the Hidden Leaf Village, but instead, he chose to spare a few precious moments for his son by infusing Kushina’s chakra into the seal, ensuring Naruto would get to spend time with his mother, even if it was just fleeting.
These acts serve as poignant reminders of how deeply Kushina was loved and valued by her family. Their stories resonate with me, as they embody the essence of sacrifice, love, and the indomitable spirit that make great characters truly memorable.
26. Izumi Curtis (Fullmetal Alchemist)
Despite not being their biological mother, Izumi Curtis is undeniably worthy of recognition for stepping up to raise the Elric brothers after their real mother’s demise, initially with some reluctance. She instilled in them values such as respect, discipline, and crucially, the art of alchemy.
As a passionate cinephile, I’d rephrase that in the first person like this:
In the world of alchemy, I’ve always admired Izumi Curtis. Her mastery of the art was evident even before she underwent Human Transmutation, granting her the unique ability to perform alchemy without a Transmutation Circle. This woman was no mere housewife; she was a skilled combatant and an alchemist par excellence. Had it not been for her, the journey of Edward and Alphonse might never have begun. To me, Izumi Curtis is nothing less than a badass, a true force to be reckoned with.
25. Yukari Nitani (Usagi Drop)
Usagi Drop, this captivating anime, revolves around a middle-aged bachelor unexpectedly embarking on the journey of parenthood. Inevitably, an alluring single mother character emerges, and it’s quite common for her to play a significant role in the series, often endearing herself to viewers as a beloved companion or romantic interest, which we refer to colloquially as a ‘waifu.’
Yukari frequently assisted Daikichi in caring for Rin because he was usually confused about the situation. Contrary to what we anticipated, despite having feelings for our absent-minded father, Yukari prioritized her son and decided against potentially complicating Daikichi’s bond with Rin instead.
24. Kobayashi (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid)
It’s consistently intriguing how certain characters seem unfazed when extraordinary events occur to them. By the point where Kanna, a juvenile dragon disguised as a little girl, appeared before Kobayashi, she had already grown accustomed to dragons existing, even owning one as her maid.
Over the course of the story, it becomes evident that Kobayashi steps into a caretaking role for Kanna, purchasing clothes for her, preparing meals, and even enrolling her in school. Remarkably, Kobayashi adapts swiftly to this new lifestyle, suggesting she may have an innate talent for motherhood.
23. Kurumi Saiki (The Disastrous Life of Saiki K.)
Wow, it seems like my little two-year-old son is teleporting and moving things with his mind! Can you believe it? Absolutely, positively, beyond a shadow of a doubt – he’s my miniature super genius! Indeed, yes, yes he is!”
This way, the character sounds excited and endearing, while still maintaining the essence of the original statement.
Regarding his son’s supposed psychic abilities, it’s hard not to find Kurumi charming each time she enters the room. Her bright looks, combined with her distant demeanor and melodious voice, make her seem like a walking ray of sunshine and rainbows.
Kurumi’s radiant appearance, coupled with her mysterious personality and sweet voice, makes it impossible not to smile when she enters the room. In essence, she is the living embodiment of sunshine and rainbows.
22. Touko Fujiwara (Natsume’s Book of Friends)
In his youth, Natsume moved from one relative to another after the loss of his parents, primarily because he had the unique ability to perceive supernatural beings known as yokai. While many relatives found his behavior peculiar and unsettling, Touko and her spouse Shigeru recognized him as a vulnerable child in need of care and understanding.
Touko, together with her spouse, recognize that some strange and scary events are occurring around their adopted son, and they likely believe Natsume may have information about it. However, they decide not to push him. The most supportive action Touko can take is to shower him with love and tenderness he lacked in his upbringing. Honestly, what else could a child long for more?
21. Chi-Chi (Dragon Ball)
Considering the scenario of raising a child with the ability to disintegrate mountains by firing beams from his hands, it’s clear that establishing certain guidelines would be essential. For instance, ensuring that the child doesn’t inadvertently obliterate the Earth beneath him should be a priority.
Over time, the personality of Chi-Chi shifted significantly – from a frightened child to a strong and courageous wife to Goku, as well as mother to Gohan and Goten. As a child, she was quickly intimidated even though she had great strength, often breaking into tears during battles. However, in order to establish order and discipline within her Super Saiyan family, Chi-Chi transformed into a fierce and fearless figure. It’s important to ensure Gohan completes his homework, and that certainly won’t be left up to Goku.
20. Irisviel von Einzbern (Fate/Zero)
The bond between a parent and their offspring exists across all species, not just among humans. Even though she was an artificial human, or a homunculus, Irisviel came to comprehend human feelings with the assistance of her future spouse, Kiritsigu.
Or:
In every type of creature, there’s a special connection between parents and their young ones. Although Irisviel was an artificially created human, or homunculus, she learned about human emotions thanks to her future husband, Kiritsugu.
Gradually, Irisviel carved out a unique identity for herself on an initially blank slate. Despite this, she grappled with understanding both her own emotions and those of others. However, one thing that seemed innate to her, contrasting her seemingly hollow or even insincere demeanor, was the deep affection she harbored whenever she held her daughter, Illyasviel.
19. March (To Your Eternity)
In this case, we have an unusual situation. March doesn’t fit the stereotypical anime mold where a character might appear to be five years old while being centuries old. Instead, though she is indeed a child, she plays a motherly role in some sense.
In the series To Your Eternity, we don’t follow a typical character, but rather an orb entity that transforms into something or someone it deeply connects with. For instance, in the opening episode, it adopted the appearance of a boy, though he appeared human-like, he was unaware of what it meant to be human and experience emotions.
In March, he learned the beginning of understanding emotions and connections. To him, March was like a mother, naming him Fushi herself. Despite their time together being brief, March significantly influenced Fushi’s development into a compassionate individual.
18. Trisha Elric (Fullmetal Alchemist)
I can’t help but notice how some authors craft characters to be almost flawless, only to tragically end their stories, aiming to evoke strong emotions from readers like me. Indeed, the emotional impact of Trisha Elric is palpable, and boy, do those feelings resonate deeply within me.
The initial episode where the Elric brothers attempt to resurrect their mother is moving on its own, but it becomes truly impactful as they guide us through their childhood with occasional flashbacks. Seeing Trisha caring for Edward and Alphonse while concealing her sickness intensifies the emotional weight of the failed Human Transmutation scene.
17. Reiko Tamura (Parasyte)
To begin with, Reiko Tamura, much like other parasites, initially viewed humans as inferior beings. However, it’s important to note that she wasn’t fundamentally dissimilar from them. She possessed an exceptional intellect and was far more rational and logical compared to most. This paved the way for her transformation into something greater than just a killer in the future.
The crucial factor that led Reiko to view humans as equals to parasites was her experience of raising her child. Through this process, she came to grasp the essence of forming connections and creating significant bonds with others.
16. Clara Magnolia (Violet Evergarden)
Without a doubt, the most acclaimed and widely loved episode of Violet Evergarden is undeniably episode 10 featuring Clara Magnolia. This series is renowned for its ability to make viewers shed tears until morning, but Clara’s tale comes close to pushing that emotional limit to the extreme.
Contrasting her lively and spirited disposition, Clara became seriously ill. Just like any concerned parent might, she fretted deeply about her daughter’s future after her health deteriorated significantly. To provide some comfort and connection over the years, she opted to compose letters that would be delivered annually on her daughter’s birthday.
One compelling reason to watch Violet Evergarden is to immerse yourself in the profound sorrow evoked by one of the most touching mothers in contemporary media, Clara Magnolia.
15. Inko Midoriya (My Hero Academia)
Deku, in the storyline, embodies justice, constantly battling for what’s fair and defending those dearest to him. His greatest hero isn’t just All Might – it’s also his mother, Inko Midoriya, who has stood by his side since day one, offering unwavering support.
In simpler terms, Inko encouraged and joined Deku in his ambition to acquire a Quirk that would enable him to become the hero he desired. However, as it appeared that this goal was out of reach, Inko deeply empathized with Deku’s feelings of despair.
I’m grateful indeed that our small champion didn’t meet his final battle. Instead, he valiantly stood shoulder-to-shoulder with his fellow warriors. All along his journey, his head held high with pride, his mother was there, rooting for him at every turn.
14. Akari Kawamoto (March Comes in Like a Lion)
Following their father’s departure, along with the passing of their mother and grandmother, Akari found herself assuming a nurturing role towards her two younger siblings. In fact, she emerged as a source of hope for our leading character when it appeared that he had lost all sense of optimism in life.
Based on her opening scene, Akari comes across as a nurturing figure who seems more like a mother to Hinata and Momo in the eyes of many viewers, rather than their sister.
13. Zenith Greyrat (Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation)
Rather than departing when her spouse was unfaithful, Zenith chose to stay, primarily due to the presence of their son, Rudeus. Following this, she had another child, Norn, and continued caring for Aisha, who served as a persistent reminder of her husband’s infidelity, but was still cared for nonetheless.
Beyond her role as a caring mother, Zenith is proficient in the art of healing magic as a skilled mage. Fortunately for Paul, she appears not to be well-versed in potent offensive spells, otherwise, he might have entertained the idea of being unfaithful to his loving yet formidable spouse.
12. Kazue Sonokawa (Sabage-bu!)
As a devoted anime enthusiast, I must say that most parents in these animated worlds often fade into obscurity. However, Kazue Sonokawa is an exception; she’s the kind of character who leaves an indelible mark on your memory. On the surface, she appears as a gentle and compassionate soul, but delve deeper, and you’ll find her peculiar and intriguing quirks, such as her fascination with charismatic individuals harboring hints of madness, will make you wonder about her mental acumen.
Beyond what’s already impressive, Kazue is adept with firearms as well, which only amplifies her toughness and coolness.
11. Mito Freecss (Hunter x Hunter)
While not all parents encourage their children’s aspirations, especially when those dreams involve dangerous careers like being a hunter, Mito Freecss, though Gon’s cousin, shows unwavering maternal care towards him. Given that Gon’s father vanished while pursuing his career as a hunter, it is understandable that she would be deeply concerned.
Ultimately, she agreed with his choice to carry on his father’s legacy, which led her to transform into a typical mother from shounen genres, spending her days at home, filled with concern about when she might next see her child again.
10. Sora Vinsmoke (One Piece)
In Violet Evergarden, Clara took steps to ensure support for her child following her eventual passing. Contrastingly, Sora deliberately ended her life early, hoping her children would lead ordinary lives, although that meant she wouldn’t be around to witness it.
Despite her inability to prevent her husband from transforming the majority of their children into cold, super-powered soldiers, she continued to cherish each and every one of them deeply.
9. Tomoko Higashikata (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 4: Diamond is Unbreakable)
From the moment Tomoko made her debut, Jojo enthusiasts found themselves immediately smitten. However, when an irritating suitor tried to court her, she swiftly and decisively delivered a punch that sent him crashing into his own vehicle. Such toughness is exactly what we’ve come to anticipate from mothers in the world of Jojo’s.
Despite prioritizing her husband over Joseph Joestar, Tomoko continues to harbor intense affection for him. Only when she confuses Jotaro with Joseph does she momentarily abandon her stern, irritated demeanor and display an uncontrollable, passionate affection towards him, repeatedly expressing her love. It’s not uncommon for the mothers in JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure to be endearingly eccentric, too.
8. Mari Katsuragi (The World God Only Knows)
In everyday life, a character with a fluctuating, almost bipolar-like personality would raise suspicions. However, in the world of anime, this type of personality can trigger the “waifu” response immediately. Mari Katsuragi, after marriage, assumed a nurturing and affectionate demeanor that she generally sustains… but there are moments when she doesn’t.
As a young woman, Mari was associated with a motorcycle group and was known as “The Snow Witch of the Mountain Pass”. It’s proving challenging to break free from a lifestyle that involved resolving issues through violence after so many years. However, it’s fortunate for all concerned that she hasn’t managed to do so – what a formidable mother that makes her!
7. Hana (Wolf Children)
Imagine if looking after two boisterous children was difficult, now envision them turning into real wolves, specifically, grey wolves. Hana found herself unprepared when her spouse passed away, leaving her to single-handedly raise these wolf children. However, her courage and optimism enabled her to maintain a glimmer of hope during the challenging times.
The film shows Hana repeatedly facing adversity, yet witnessing her persistently conquer each obstacle is nothing short of inspiring.
The movie depicts Hana encountering difficulties time and again, but what’s truly inspiring is watching her tackle each challenge head-on.
6. Fortuna (Re:Zero)
Following the vanishing of her parents, Emilia was left with just her aunt Fortuna as her remaining family. Fortuna nurtured and cared for Emilia in much the same way a mother would, and Emilia regarded Fortuna as if she were her true mother.
Due to unique circumstances, Emilia was regarded as exceptionally extraordinary and required separation from others. Consequently, Aunt Fortuna spared no effort to nurture her beloved niece with immense care and affection.
5. Mari Mutoh (Japan Sinks 2020)
In the world of anime, Mari stands out as one of the most courageous and robust women. Amid Japan’s chaos caused by enormous earthquakes that jeopardize the very existence of the archipelago, Mari consistently encourages and guides her family through numerous challenging circumstances.
In this trying time following her husband’s tragic demise, Mari became the pillar that kept her family standing strong. It’s hard enough to envision the pressure such circumstances might inflict upon a parent, but remarkably, Mari maintained her composure amidst her own battle with a life-threatening heart illness.
4. Maquia (Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms)
Maquia’s parenting voyage didn’t kick off through childbirth or selfless adoption; instead, it began out of a desire to avoid solitude. From that moment on, her life took a completely different course.
Initially, Maquia was inexperienced as a mother due to her youth and lack of knowledge about the role. However, throughout the movie, she undergoes a transformation from being clueless to becoming a seasoned mother, making her journey an engaging aspect of the film.
3. Sanae Furukawa (Clannad)
Sanae Furukawa stands out among few mother characters, as she plays a significant part in the sequel of an anime. Her journey from a mom who tearfully defends her peculiar bread concepts, to facing the tragic loss of her daughter, offers a heart-wrenching emotional ride.
Watching Sanae adopt a stricter parenting style with her grandkid, even if it was feigned, still manages to tug at your heartstrings. It’s astonishing, given all she has been through, how this seemingly youthful and lively character can transform into one that demonstrates such courage and responsibility.
2. Sachiko Fujinuma (Erased)
While Satoru may be the main character, many fans, if not all, would argue that Sachiko stands out as the most remarkable. The depth of characterization given to this intelligent, resourceful, reliable, and loving mother by Kei Sanbe, the author of the original manga, is seldom found not only in anime, but also in fiction overall.
In the midst of juggling work, single parenthood, and forging a strong bond with her son, Sachiko also manages to step up as a hero by rescuing Kayo from abusive circumstances – making her an extraordinary mom character. It’s not that she’s flawless; rather, it’s the multifaceted aspects of her personality that truly set her apart and reinforce the idea that she can excel in every role.
1. Kyoko Honda (Fruits Basket)
The manner in which Kyoko’s character, especially as a deceased parent, was portrayed in the anime stands out as one of the finest we’ve encountered. Her death subtly pervades the series without being too intrusive. It significantly impacts various main characters, and the flashbacks are not overwhelming because they depict Kyoko engaging with people other than her daughter, leaving lasting impressions on their lives.
It’s worth noting that Kyoko is not only attractive and possesses an intriguing backstory, but she also delivers her lines with great skill as a voice actor. She is affectionate, humorous, optimistic, and consistently significant to the show, even though she isn’t one of the primary characters. The death scene from Kyoko’s perspective was captivating due to the realistic portrayal of her character on screen.
If you haven’t yet, I highly recommend giving the new version of Fruits Basket a try. It features a well-portrayed mother character that is truly worth watching.
