The Cannes Film Festival 2025 happens between May 13th and 24th, and many films are creating a lot of buzz for the Palme d’Or. Here are five films to keep an eye on from the competition section, all directed by famous filmmakers like Wes Anderson, Julia Ducournau, and Lynne Ramsay.
The Phoenician Scheme by Wes Anderson
Wes Anderson is back at Cannes with his film “The Phoenician Scheme,” maintaining the pattern of appearing in the Competition section every two years. This film features an intriguing espionage plot and boasts a star-studded cast including Benicio Del Toro, Mia Threapleton, Michael Cera, Tom Hanks, Bryan Cranston, Riz Ahmed, Scarlett Johansson, and Benedict Cumberbatch.
The movie was made in Germany, co-produced by The Indian Paintbrush and American Empirical Pictures along with Studio Babelsberg. Focus Features plans to debut it in North America on May 30, followed by a wider release on June 6. Universal Pictures International takes care of worldwide distribution.
Die, My Love by Lynne Ramsay
At the prestigious Cannes Film Festival of 2025, Lynne Ramsay’s film “Die, My Love” has sparked considerable conversation within the Competition category. This cinematic work, based on Ariana Harwicz’s novel, transposes the original French backdrop to a tranquil rural America. Here, a woman grapples with intense emotions of love and inner turmoil.
Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, LaKeith Stanfield, and Sissy Spacek are part of the star-studded cast for this upcoming movie. In addition to her acting role, Lawrence is also producing the film through her production company, Excellent Cadaver, alongside Martin Scorsese and Andrea Calderwood. The funding for the project comes from Black Label Media.
Alpha by Julia Ducournau
Julia Ducournau returns to the Cannes Competition following her 2021 Palme d’Or victory for Titane, and her latest film, Alpha, is said to be her most intimate work yet. The story revolves around a 13-year-old girl whose life undergoes a transformation when she arrives home with a new tattoo.
As a die-hard enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement about this upcoming movie! I’m thrilled to be part of the fanbase for this production that boasts Tahar Rahim, Golshifteh Farahani, and the promising newcomer Melissa Boros. Even more intriguing is the news that Neon has already secured North American rights for it. This can only mean one thing – we’re in for a cinematic treat!
The History Of Sound by Oliver Hermanus
Oliver Hermanus presents “The History of Sound” at Cannes, which is a heartfelt love story set during World War I between two American men, portrayed by Josh O’Connor and Paul Mescal. This film marks his revisit to the festival since he won the Queer Palm back in 2011.
The movie is financed by Film4, co-produced by End Cue, Fat City, Theresa Ryan-van Graan, Zhang Xin, and Hermanus. Mubi holds the rights for North America, while Focus Features and Universal Pictures International are responsible for its worldwide distribution.
Sirat by Oliver Laxe
In simpler terms, Spanish director Oliver Laxe premiered his movie, titled “Sirat,” in the Cannes Competition category. This is significant because he had previously won awards in other parts of the festival. The plot revolves around a father-son duo who are on a quest to find their lost daughter and sister amidst a rave party happening in Morocco.
The movie is created by Movistar Plus+ alongside El Deseo, led by Pedro and Agustin Almodóvar, Filmes Da Ermida, Uri Films, and France’s 4A4 Productions. BTeam Pictures will handle the distribution of the film in Spain.
