5 Characters We Hope to Spot In the Second SUPER MARIO BROS. Film

As a seasoned gamer with decades of Nintendo adventures under my belt, the upcoming sequel to “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has me absolutely jittery with anticipation! The tantalizing tease of niche characters gracing our screens is like manna from heaven for us old-school gamers.

Following the huge theater earnings of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Nintendo has shared that a sequel will hit cinemas on April 3, 2026. While specifics about its rumored storyline remain undisclosed, it’s hinted that some lesser-known characters might make an appearance in the upcoming film.

In a conversation with Keegan-Michael Key (who voices Toad), he mentioned that in the upcoming project, we’ll encounter some familiar old faces and perhaps some less known characters. However, due to how the story is currently being structured, these characters are likely to be quite fascinating.

Could he possibly be alluding to which characters? Indeed, “old favorites” and “deep cuts” span a wide array of Mario characters. Yet, let me share with you five characters that we’re eagerly anticipating will appear in the upcoming movie!

Lakitu

Among our favorites, Lakitu stands out, having served as a formidable adversary throughout the years as we battled against him in both the primary games and Mario Kart. Lakitu is a unique member of the Koopa Troopa family, characterized by his eyeglasses and lack of a beak. He navigates the skies in a cloud with a cheerful smiley face. In his interactions with Mario, he often hurls spiked eggs that eventually hatch into small, four-legged Koopas.

In various Super Mario Bros. games, Lakitu is a well-known adversary, but you might also recall him from the Mario Kart series, where he serves as the race starter and eventually becomes a character option in later versions of the franchise. It was quite unexpected that Lakitu was absent in the first film, given his long-standing status as one of the original Mario enemies.

Rosalina

Rosalina, a relatively new character on this roster, has garnered a significant following ever since her introduction in “Super Mario Galaxy”. Residing in outer space with her adopted Lumas, she is portrayed as an enigmatic and potent figure in the game. Utilizing the Comet Observatory for interstellar travel, she traverses the universe.

In the game “Super Mario Galaxy,” Mario employs the Comet Observatory for interplanetary travel, an intriguing plot element for a future film. It’s amusing that Lumalee, who is captured by Bowser in “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” differs from Rosalina, as we hope to see her character on screen when the next film releases in 2026, under the watchful gaze of the stars above.

Monty Mole

Monty Moles are both irritating and adorable, as their name implies. These creatures dwell beneath the ground, surprising anyone by emerging unexpectedly and potentially causing problems for those they encounter. Throughout the Mario series, Monty Moles have taken on various roles, showing up in main games as well as spin-offs.

In the game of Mario Party, you’ll remember the memorable instance where you whack opponents, much like Whac-A-Mole. Notably, Monty Moles are also a part of the Mario Kart series, popping up from the ground to send karts off course in maps such as Moo Moo Meadows, Peach Gardens, and Animal Crossing.

Dr. Mario

It might sound a bit surprising, but there’s some basis for this idea. Dr. Mario could represent a distinct aspect or alter ego of Mario, or even be an entirely different character. In the Super Mario Manga, Dr. Mario is indeed portrayed as a unique individual apart from Mario.

In his unique video game series, Dr. Mario aligns Megavitamins to combat viruses. There’s a chance we might see him in a different world or dimension. The animation style could resemble classic 2D Tetris graphics. Dr. Mario is also a character within Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, implying that in future movies, he and Mario might team up for some battles.

Excitebiker

While it might sound unusual, let me explain. Key didn’t specify that his comment applied only to Mario characters. Moreover, he mentioned that “The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2” is “a bit more expansive.” This suggests that a character from the classic Nintendo NES series like Exciterbiker could potentially make an appearance in the upcoming film.

Absolutely, numerous other iconic NES characters could seamlessly blend in, such as the Ice Climbers from their game and Little Mac from Punch-Out!! Yet, the rider from Excitebike particularly caught my attention due to the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe map, Excitebike Arena, which is based on the original game. Other properties like F-Zero fit this description, but lack visible characters. The Excitebiker seems like a suitable choice as it’s an older Nintendo franchise with ample room for innovation since the character doesn’t have much of a distinct personality to begin with.

In addition to numerous other characters, adversaries, and leaders that I’m eagerly anticipating (including but not limited to the Koopalings!), it’s Yoshi, a beloved figure among fans, that I’m particularly excited to see in the upcoming movie. Since the last film’s end credits hinted at his appearance, we can only speculate about who else will join the cast for the next installment. To discover the truth, we’ll all need to stay tuned when it’s released. Alternatively, I could tune in and share my findings with you all.
