As a die-hard fan of Assassin’s Creed who has spent countless hours exploring historical periods and unraveling ancient mysteries, I can confidently say that the series is at its best when it dares to tread where no one has gone before – or rather, where we haven’t gone in the game world yet.
The Assassin’s Creed video game franchise is highly cherished, first launched in 2007 and boasting a total of 31 releases across various platforms. One of the most eagerly awaited titles slated for 2024 is Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, marking the series’ journey into the Sengoku era. Over the years, the Assassin’s Creed (AC) franchise has ventured to some intriguing historical periods as it unfolds the struggle between the Assassins and the Templars. Here are three captivating timeframes that might make for compelling future games in this series.
American Civil War
In a different rendition: Assassin’s Creed III was based on the American Revolution, where players controlled the protagonist Connor, who played a significant role in this historic event. However, the game concluded with Connor witnessing slaves being sold at a port, but didn’t delve deeply into that plot point. Now, imagine if we revisited another pivotal war period in American history. The Civil War could serve as that timeframe.
As I step into the digital world, I find myself embodying a brave soul who has escaped bondage, seeking liberation and justice against the oppressive Templars. The journey ahead is filled with intrigue, as I cross paths with historical figures like Harriet Tubman, a beacon of hope in the Underground Railroad. We’ll work together on daring missions to help more enslaved people find their freedom.
Maya Civilization
The Mayan Civilization flourished across Mexico, dating back to around the late 200s up until the late 1600s. Remarkably, there are places even today that harbor structures from this ancient civilization. So far, Mexico hasn’t been featured in the Assassin’s Creed series; therefore, it would be intriguing to envision an adventure set among the Mayan Civilization. This could serve as a fascinating challenge to explore how the narrative unfolds and the depths we might plumb when delving into the mysteries of this hidden society.
One intriguing enigma concerning human history is the vanishing of the Mayan civilization. Although it’s commonly assumed they may have moved and merged with other groups during that era, there are also theories suggesting extraterrestrials might have been involved in their disappearance and the collapse of their empire. With Assassin’s Creed previously exploring alien concepts, this scenario could potentially steer the game back towards such themes.
Present Day World
While one of the big attractions of Assassin’s Creed is going back in time for fictional tacks on history, there’s also a story that could be told in the present day. The earlier iterations of the series did feature some playable elements in modern times, but that has come to an end. Imagine a game entirely set in this century. Instead of being restricted to one area, the entire world could be a part of the game, as hoping on a flight wouldn’t be an issue. Watch Dogs attempted to bring Assassin’s Creed to the present day, but that was a different series and much of the essence was lost. It’s time for AC to modernize a bit with a game in this time period.
