The new movie, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, will be available on Netflix starting March 31st, just over two months after it first appeared in theaters.
This quick decision to move forward with a sequel comes after the first film didn’t perform well in theaters. The fact that it became available to rent or buy online just 32 days after its release signaled Sony was ready to shift focus away from a traditional theatrical run.
Compared to the first movie, the turnaround is even more telling.

Much Faster Than The First Movie
The first 28 Years Later from last summer took around 92 days before it landed on Netflix.
Because The Bone Temple is releasing on streaming services 74 days from now, the sequel will be available almost three weeks earlier than originally planned.
That lines up with how poorly the movie performed in theaters.
The new movie, Bone Temple, had a disappointing opening weekend, bringing in only $12.5 million. Its total worldwide earnings currently stand at $57 million, with just $25 million of that coming from the United States. This is a significant drop from the first Bone Temple film, which earned over $151 million worldwide and $70 million domestically, though that film also underperformed given its high production costs.
The audience clearly didn’t show up for round two.

Early VOD And Streaming Point To Underperformance
The Bone Temple didn’t just arrive on Netflix quickly. It also went to VOD after only 32 days.
This aligns with recent comments from Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos about movies that don’t do well in theaters and how quickly they become available online. Sarandos explained that films with poor box office performance are often released digitally sooner than expected, like with Superman, which became available on demand after just 35 days – much faster than the typical 45-day window.
With Bone Temple becoming available to rent digitally in just 32 days and now heading to Netflix in 74, the film’s success is evident.
The movie underperformed, and Sony is wasting no time getting it onto streaming.

What About The Third Movie?
The quick Netflix release also raises more questions about the future of the franchise.
It’s still unclear if a third movie will happen. While Cillian Murphy is rumored to be involved in discussions for the next film, there hasn’t been an official confirmation. When recently asked about the possibility, Murphy only expressed his hope that it would come to fruition.
It doesn’t seem like this project is fully confirmed or in active production. There’s also talk that it might be released directly on Netflix.
After a disappointing theatrical run, with Bone Temple becoming available for digital rental after just 32 days and now streaming on Netflix only 74 days after its release, the chances of a sequel seem slim.
