As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Sony’s move to release a sequel to “28 Years Later” before the original even hits the shelves in 2025 is quite an audacious leap. Having witnessed the rise and fall of numerous franchises, I can’t help but draw parallels with the ill-fated Exorcist: Believer trilogy that was supposed to rule the roost, but ended up being a cautionary tale on the perils of premature sequelizing.
Just as the wise proverb suggests not to rush things or act prematurely, Sony is taking a gradual approach with the upcoming movie “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.” While the original sequel, “28 Years Later,” isn’t set for release until June 20, 2025, Sony has already announced that “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” will follow in January 16, 2026. Nia DaCosta is set to direct the film, as reported by Deadline.
It’s unknown at this point who might appear in the sequel or what the plot will be for “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” but we can speculate that some characters from the original film may survive and reappear, or it could feature an entirely new cast. Given the title, it seems the story may unfold shortly after the events of “28 Years Later,” possibly even concurrently.
It seems the studio is quite optimistic that this movie will thrive and they’re eager to start work on another film. However, we can’t help but recall the case of Exorcist: The Believer, which was intended as the first part of a trilogy, but its poor reception led to the cancellation of subsequent sequels. So, we’ll have to wait and see if their decision proves wise or not.
