High School DxD, originally a Japanese light novel series, has been brought to life through four seasons of anime adaptation. It’s renowned as the top ecchi series due to its engaging storyline and abundance of action, humor, and romance scenes. Unfortunately, no new seasons have been announced (yet). In the meantime, here is a curated list of 25 exceptional anime series similar to High School DxD that you shouldn’t miss out on.
1. Highschool of the Dead
Original Run: July 5, 2010 – September 20, 2010

Everyday morning, events unfolded much like any other day. From his rooftop vantage point, our protagonist, Komuro Takashi, witnesses an unusual scene at school: a shady character creates chaos at the entrance. In an attempt to eject him, one of the teachers is bitten by this suspicious man, and in the ensuing panic, he rises, but now, he’s transformed into a zombie.
Subsequently, he begins devouring the fellow teachers accompanying him. Upon witnessing this gruesome scene, Takashi swiftly retreats into the high school and joins forces with his friends Miyamoto Rei and Igou Hisashi, whom he is particularly close to. It turns out that the school had already been overrun by infected teachers and other high school zombies. The trio then contemplate ascending to the rooftop, but en route, they come across a professor who has unfortunately transformed into a zombie.
In the end, Hisashi gets bitten by the teacher, resulting in a wounded arm for him. After slaying the zombie, they make it to the school’s rooftop, where they encounter numerous zombies and students being attacked by them along the way. On reaching the rooftop, Hisashi starts experiencing the initial symptoms of the bite he received from the zombie.
2. So, I Can’t Play H!

Ryōsuke Kaga is a high school student with an intense fascination towards women. One wet day, he encounters a girl who appears to be soaked in the rain without an umbrella. This girl turns out to be Lisara Restall, a being from another world known as Grimworld, who is scouring the human realm to find someone with a powerful soul, capable of releasing vast amounts of energy essential for the preservation of her own world.
In a short-term agreement, Lisara taps into Ryosuke’s twisted essence for her journey through the world of men, providing her with necessary energy. She discloses to Ryosuke that he has merely three months left to live, but offers him a possibility to prolong his life.
As a passionate cinephile, I found myself at a pivotal moment when Ryosuke proposed a pact to Lisara – he’d aid her in seeking the “powerful spirit,” and in return, she’d extend his life span. With renewed determination, I embarked on this journey that would not only deepen my connection with Lisara but also unravel the mysteries we sought.
3. Haganai
Original Run: October 7, 2011 – March 29, 2013

At St. Chronica’s Academy, a Catholic high school, a new student named Kodaka Hasegawa has recently enrolled. His blond hair, a trait passed down from his European mother, leads others to mistakenly believe he’s dyed it, causing them to view him as a suspect. One day, Kodaka crosses paths with the aloof and isolated Yozora Mikazuki, who is conversing with her imaginary friend, Tomo, about herself.
Understanding they all seem to lack social connections, Kodaka and Yozora conclude it’d be beneficial to establish a club named “Your Neighbor’s Club”, designed primarily for students to meet new people and foster friendships.
4. Date A Live

The Date A Live series kicks off following a peculiar event known as a “space quake” that causes widespread destruction across central Eurasia, resulting in the loss of over 150 million lives. Over the subsequent 30 years, more frequent, smaller space quakes continue to strike the world unpredictably. Now, Itsuka Shido is just an average high school student who struggles with socializing with girls. On his very first day at school, a city-destroying space quake occurs, and a girl in armor emerges before him.
In a fierce battle, our protagonist gets knocked out. Upon regaining consciousness, he discovers himself aboard a ship and learns that his sister, Kotori, is the captain. She reveals to him that the girl in question is one of the “spirits” – enigmatic beings from another dimension who cause chaos when they arrive on Earth. The only solution to prevent this disaster, she explains, is for them to encounter true love.
5. To LOVE Ru
Original Run: April 4, 2008 – October 28, 2015

Fifteen-year-old high school student Rito Yuki, who’s fairly ordinary, harbors deep affection for Haruna Sairenji, a fellow classmate. Yet, he’s never found the nerve to express his feelings to her. One particularly motivated day, Rito decides to muster the courage and tell her how he feels. However, numerous attempts to do so are repeatedly thwarted by unexpected interruptions, each more unpredictable than the last. Once again left undeterred, Rito fails in his confession.
During his commute home after an exhausting day, unexpectedly, while relaxing in his bathroom, a charming young woman suddenly materializes before him: the sudden appearance of Lala Satalin Deviluke, the first princess of planet Deviluke and inheritor of the galaxy, is about to disrupt the tranquil existence of our protagonist.
6. Campione!
Original Run: July 6, 2012 – September 28, 2012

Our main character, a young Japanese man named Godou Kusanagi, travels to Italy to give back a stone slab that his grandfather had previously taken from its original owner. Upon arriving, he’s ambushed by a local girl called Erika Blandelli, and Godot finds himself caught up in a fight between magic users and fallen deities. It turns out the stone tablet is an old magical book containing sealed divine power.
In a new twist, Godot ascends as the mortal “champion” – an individual with divine slaying abilities. Erica remains steadfastly loyal and proclaims her love for this character. As Godot confronts gods, magicians, and other magical warriors, additional allies will emerge to support him, each expressing their affection for our leading figure.
7. Mayo Chiki!
Original Run: July 7, 2011 – September 29, 2011

Kinjiro Sakamachi is a typical student, except for his fear of girls, and he resides with his sister Kureha who sometimes trains him by punching him like a punching bag. One day, during a routine visit to the school bathroom, he accidentally finds Subaru Konoe’s patterned undergarments, who happens to be Kanade Suzutsuki’s director’s daughter and her personal butler.
In this version, I tried to make the text more accessible by simplifying some of the language and rearranging the sentence structure for clarity.
Consequently, he realizes Subaru is in fact a female. To safeguard this secret, the two females plan to make him fall for them.
8. Rosario + Vampire
The original run was from January 3, 2008 to March 27, 2008 and then again from October 2, 2008 to December 24, 2008. Each of these periods consisted of 13 episodes.

Over time, I encounter Kurumu Kurono, a captivating succubus, and Yukari Sendo, a precocious little witch, who also join our enthralling journey.
9. Sekirei

2020 saw Minato Sahashi in Tokyo, known as Shintō Teito (“New Eastern Imperial Capital”), struggling for a second time with university entrance exams. He’s yet to find success with romantic relationships and is still jobless. Despite being incredibly intelligent, the intense pressure of exams has been his undoing, leading to repeated failures.
Due to these circumstances, he’s often seen as a failure by others, including his younger sister. One fateful day, a beautiful girl named Musubi seemingly appeared out of nowhere. However, it soon becomes clear that Musubi isn’t your typical girl; she’s actually a Sekirei and has chosen him as her partner or Ashikabi.
10. Freezing
Original Run: January 8, 2011 – December 20, 2013

In the upcoming times, our planet faces relentless assaults from alien beings hailing from another realm, posing a grave threat to humankind. Known as Nova, these entities are resistant to standard weaponry and possess the ability to instigate a Freezing Field, a destructive attack that locks matter in place. To avert our own demise, mankind establishes a new global alliance, the Knight Organization, with the mission of building an armed force capable of fending off this invasion.
This army consists of women known as Pandoras, who have been granted extraordinary powers and enhanced physical capabilities due to their Nova tissues. These implants are called Stigmata. The Pandoras carry a device called a Limiter, which can harness some of a Pandora’s power and produce Freezing, used to counteract the abilities of a Nova.
11. Actually, I Am…

Ah, Asahi Kuromine – the high school student who can’t keep secrets for the life of him – manages to astonish his classmate, Yoko Shiragami, by unveiling a grand pair of wings. It turns out that Yōko is actually a vampire, and her father has warned her that if her true identity ever surfaces, he will transform their establishment.
Because Yuko is unusually preoccupied, she finds it hard to conceal her mystery, especially with Mikan, Asahi’s childhood friend, constantly pressuring her for information. Later on, Asahi learns that many other girls at their school carry heavy secrets, making her role as a confidante even more challenging.
12. Otome Yōkai Zakuro

The narrative unfolds in Japan during its transition into Western culture, a time when people and supernatural beings dwell together harmoniously. To preserve this balance, an administration called the Department of Spirits is instituted, populated by individuals from both the human and spiritual realms.
In this scenario, Lieutenants Kei Agemaki, Yoshinokazura Riken, and Hanakiri Ganryu have been selected as human delegates, while Zakuro, Suzuskihotaru, and the twin spirits Bonbori and Hozuki serve as their spiritual counterparts. However, due to a deep-rooted dislike of individuals who readily embrace Jesuit traditions, Zakuro finds it difficult to work with humans, and Lieutenant Agemaki harbors an intense apprehension towards spirits.
13. Omamori Himari

Seven years prior to the narrative’s commencement, a tragic car accident claimed the lives of Yuto Amakawa’s parents, leaving him orphaned with no family to provide for him. The sole memento left behind by his kin was an enigmatic and mystical amulet gifted to him by his deceased grandmother. Since then, his childhood friend Rinko Kuzaki (accompanied by her parents) has been looking after Yuto. However, on his 16th birthday, his life undergoes a significant shift when he encounters a guardian spirit in the guise of a samurai cat-girl named Himari.
I’m Himari, and I’ve shared with you an intriguing piece of my past – my ancestors were among the twelve demon-hunting families who once guarded feudal Japan. Now, I find myself in a solemn vow to shield Yuto from the remnants of those demons that have resurfaced with the intent to end his life. There’s a twist though: Yuto has an allergy to cats. This minor inconvenience becomes more significant when I transform into my cat-girl form, which may cause complications in our alliance.
14. The Familial of Zero

In her second academic year, she desires to utilize this recurring event as an opportunity to demonstrate her abilities to all, an event where a being is called upon to stay by her side throughout her lifetime as a mage.
15. The Testament of Sister New Devil

At the Hijirigasaka Academy, Basara Tojo is a student. One unexpected day, his father, Jin, announces that he has remarried, introducing the possibility of Basara gaining new sisters. Upon meeting his two stunning adoptive siblings, Mio Naruse and Maria Naruse, Basara’s life takes an exciting turn.
Following his father’s departure overseas, Basara soon uncovers that the two women he interacts with are, in fact, members of a demonic lineage. In order to protect himself and align with the heroes’ group instead, this becomes essential for him. Mio, who is a princess from the demonic realm, attempts to establish a master-servant bond with Basara, but surprisingly, Maria acts contrary to this expectation, with herself as the master under Basara’s command.
16. Strike the Blood

In my opinion, I’m captivated by “Strike the Blood,” a tale that unfolds in contemporary Japan on the unique island of Itogami, colloquially known as the Demon District. This island serves as a sanctuary, where a truce was established between supernatural beings and humans. The residents within these boundaries, including our protagonists Kojō Akatsuki, a high school vampire student, and Yukina Himeragi, a young, gifted swordsman shaman, are forced to abide by the rules set forth in this experimental zone, confined to the Demon Districts for their own safety.
Yukina Himeragi is dispatched to an island for surveillance purposes, as Kojō Akatsuki is believed to be the 4th Primogenitor, a powerful vampire whose potential actions could disrupt the equilibrium established by the alliance of the initial three Primogenitors, as per a sacred treaty.
17. Demon King Daimao

Sai Akuto is a new student at the Magical Arts Academy, nurturing a childhood ambition: to become a high priest and rectify the world’s flaws. At the train station, he encounters Junko Hattori, another academy attendee, hailing from the Suhara family, responsible for safeguarding the emperor.
Since they both have identical dreams, they choose to swear an oath of friendship. If either party breaches it, the offender will perish under the sword’s curse. Upon entering the Academy, a mandatory fitness test awaits, which not only assesses physical prowess but also reveals each student’s future career. Remarkably, when Akuto’s turn for the test arrives, the artificial spirit foretells that he will become the next “demon lord.
18. Prison School

Hachimitsu Academy, a prestigious girls’ school located in Tokyo, is known for its rigid code of conduct, one of which prohibits relationships with boys. However, at the start of this story, the school makes an unexpected change by admitting male students while maintaining the same rules. To everyone’s astonishment, there are just five boys who enroll: Kiyoshi Fujino, Takehito “Gakuto” Morokuzu, Shingo Wakamoto, Jōji “Joe” Nezu, and Reiji “André” Andō.
The boys rapidly formed a bond, but trouble ensued once their clandestine surveillance of the women’s restrooms was exposed: within a month, they were sentenced to serve time in prison along with hard labor, a penalty meted out by the stern student council of the school, which is headed by President Mari, daughter of the headmaster, Vice President Meiko, and Secretary Hana.
19. The Qwaser of Stigmata

In the 21st century, religious tensions escalated into conflict in Japan. This was marked by challenges to religious beliefs, a resurgence of archaic Christian ideologies from Orthodox Christianity… Meanwhile, Mafuyu Oribe and his cousin Tomo Yamanobe, students at the renowned St-Mikhailov Academy, encountered a strange boy with silver hair during this period.
His name is Aleksander “Sasha” Nikolaevich, who is famously known as a Qwaser – a unique individual with the ability to harness power from a special liquid substance (soma) and manipulate various elements from the periodic table (like oxygen or iron). The intrigue surrounding an enchanted icon, believed to grant every wish, will ignite conflict and pull him into a violent struggle against other Qwasers, ultimately involving the academy in this deadly battle.
20. Trinity Seven

16-year-old Arata Kasuga resides with his cousin and childhood companion, Hijiri, all by themselves. Unveiling the secret that this existence is merely a product of a mystical book, learning that the world they once knew has been obliterated, and realizing Hijiri is nowhere to be found, Arata determines to enroll in Biblia Academy with the intention of mastering magic and rescuing his cousin.
Consequently, it falls upon the seven most potent magicians, known as the Trinity Seven, to instruct Arata in the art of magic, whether the outcome proves beneficial or detrimental.
21. Is This a Zombie?

Ayumu Aikawa, an ordinary high school student, meets a gruesome end at the hands of a serial killer one day. Miraculously, he’s brought back to life by a necromancer named Eucliwood Hellscythe as a zombie. Instead of remaining a servant, however, Ayumu unintentionally takes on the abilities of a “masō-shōjo” called Haruna, transforming into a masō-shōjo himself in the process.
Afterward, the young man will find himself juggling his responsibilities as a masō-shōjo, academic pursuits, and the hunt for his assassin, all while sharing his home with Eucliwood, Haruna, and the vampire ninja known as Seraphim.
22. Heaven’s Lost Property

The tale introduces us to Tomoki Sakurai, a boy residing in the Japanese metropolis of Sorami. One day, Tomoki gets an invitation from his old friend Sohara Mitsuki and Eishirō Sugata (head of “The New World” club) to gather at midnight to scrutinize a peculiar celestial body spotted over Sorami city. As events unfold, Tomoki decides to go by himself when he receives an urgent call from Sugata, warning him to immediately run for safety as the object is about to reach him.
Upon this moment, an anomaly descends directly upon me, turning out to be none other than a creature known as an Angeloid – specifically, Ikaros.
23. Negima! Magister Negi Magi

Ten-year magic scholar Negi Springfield recently finished seven years of magical training. To further hone his skills, he’s dispatched to Japan and assigned as an English instructor at Mahora College, specifically class 2-A. Upon his arrival, he butts heads with one of his students, Asuna Kagurazaka, who he will be living with according to the school director’s decision. Soon enough, Asuna finds out that Negi is a magician. It won’t take long for him to realize that teaching a class full of girls isn’t always a walk in the park.
24. Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt

In a twist of events, we have two angels, Panty and her junior sibling Stocking, who are tasked with eliminating spectral entities. These entities are troubled human souls that failed to find peace and are causing unrest in the city of Daten City. Guided by Pastor Garterbelt, they are on a quest to gather the “Ecus of Paradise”. Once collected, these artifacts will enable them to return to Heaven, restoring their celestial rank.
These young women will indeed require their abilities; when affected by them, their garments transform into formidable weapons at best. Yet, their activities seem to bring about the destruction of the city rather than its preservation.
25. Urusei Yatsura

Urusei Yatsura is a collection of whimsical tales that unfold post the arrival of the Onis, an extraterrestrial race, on Earth. These beings are far superior to humans in technology, and they choose the hapless Ataru Moroboshi, a high school student with a history of bad luck, chronic flirting but poor success, and laziness, as the Earth’s guardian.
In ten days, Ataru must manage to encounter and touch the horns of Lamu, the daughter of the Oni King. After a mix-up (Lamu mistakenly interprets Ataru’s words as being directed towards her instead of his girlfriend Shinobu), events transpire in an unforeseen manner, resulting in Earth’s salvation. In this unexpected turn of events, Lamu decides to stay on Earth and live near her newfound love, Ataru, despite the hardships he faces.
