Since then, it has been transformed into a manga by Zekkyō since the year 2007, followed by an anime adaptation that aired from October 2, 2008. In this narrative, I find myself as Kokonotsu, a youth living in the countryside who reluctantly diverts from my father’s wishes to manage our family’s sweet shop, a humble candy store. One fateful day, a girl named Hotaru, with an ardor for all things sweet, wanders into our establishment, introducing a new dimension to my simple life.
Moving forward, she frequently returned to persuade our protagonist into managing the family business. Moreover, the confections and other sugary treats depicted in the art are real or were once produced (at some point). The narrative is primarily conveyed by Hotaru, yet occasionally by Kokonotsu, based on the situation at hand.
4. School Rumble

Tenma Tsukamoto is a young Japanese resident in Yagami city, where she’s smitten with an unusual classmate, Ōji Karasuma, who appears indifferent towards others. In a bid to catch the attention of their desired partners, they resort to methods that may be unconventional but are always engaging.

6. Violet Evergarden

The plot unfolds around a youthful girl engaged in the business of “Automatic Memory Dolls”. These dolls were originally crafted by Professor Orland for his visually impaired wife, Mollie, to aid her in writing her novels. This phrase denotes individuals who act as public scribes, their role being to record the thoughts and emotions of others. Following a grueling four-year conflict, a girl with a heavy burden in her past struggles, albeit not without effort, to construct a new future by taking up this occupation. Yet, among all the wounds received during the war, there remains one that stubbornly refuses to mend.
The term applies to people who work as public scribes, whose job is to jot down the thoughts and feelings of others. After four challenging years of fighting, a girl with a difficult past strives, not without struggle, to create a fresh start by joining this profession. However, among all the injuries sustained during the war, there’s one that seems reluctant to heal.
7. Shirobako

8. Nisekoi

The anime titled Nisekoi revolves around the tale of Raku Ichijō, a teenager belonging to the yakuza clan Shuei-Gumi, and Chitoge Kirisaki, the offspring of a rival gang chief named Bee Hive. After she flees the scene, Raku discovers that he has lost his locket which was gifted to him by his long-time crush who he made a clandestine vow with. While they search for it, their relationship gradually deteriorates as they develop mutual dislike for each other.
9. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Upon discovering her living situation, they kindly extend an invitation for her to stay with them, in return for helping out around the house.
Tohru moves in with Yuki, Kyô, and Shigure, and soon enough, she’s privy to the family’s hidden truth: They are all under a curse that turns them into one of the twelve Chinese zodiac animals. This transformation occurs when someone of the opposite sex makes a physical contact on their neck, or they feel embarrassed or weakened.
A short while after, they regain their human form (the timeframe might fluctuate), however, they emerge unclothed this time (which can be quite inconvenient, particularly for Tohru, as she frequently witnesses these transformations).
11. Azumanga Daioh

In my perspective as a film critic, this captivating tale unfolds primarily within the walls of a high school nestled just outside Tokyo. 12. Hori-san to Miyamura-kun

An unexpected event unfolded one day when Souta came home hurt; it was a mysterious stranger adorned with numerous piercings who stepped in to help him.
It turns out that this individual is actually Miyamura. Although Hori was taken aback to discover he’s not the same person Miyamura presents at school, she becomes upset when Miyamura catches a glimpse of her real appearance at home. However, they both decide to conceal their true identities from their classmates.
13. Laid-Back Camp

Moving with her family to a rural Japanese town, high schooler Nadeshiko Kagamihara dozed off during a bike ride and didn’t awaken until nightfall. Camping enthusiast Rin Shima came to her aid, and it was her older sister who eventually found Nadeshiko. They exchanged contact info, and Nadeshiko decided to go camping with her new acquaintance again in the future.
At school, energetic Nadeshiko decides to become a member of the outdoor club, where she’s joined by Chiaki Ōgaki and Aoi Inuyama. Together, they aim to embark on camping adventures. Additionally, Rin attends the same school and is encouraged by her friend Ena Saitō to join them on these camping trips as well.
Initially shy Rin enjoys solitude, but on this occasion, her friend reveals the location of her upcoming adventure to Nadeshiko. Excited, Nadeshiko surprises Rin with a genuine camping meal while they both gaze at Mount Fuji. Gradually, Rin warms up to company.
14. NEW GAME!

15. Silver Spoon

Originally hailing from Sapporo, Yūgo Hachiken yearns to venture as far from home as possible following his high school graduation. Consequently, he elects to attend the agricultural high school in Ōezo, Yezo – a rural area known for its isolation within the nation and offering boarding facilities. While academic subjects pose little challenge for him, he encounters an abundance of practical hours, leaving him with minimal free time.
In this class, many of his peers originate from agricultural backgrounds and possess specialized knowledge due to it. Unlike him, they’ve already mapped out their post-school plans. However, he excels in areas such as mathematics and can offer assistance to his classmates in that subject.
In a natural and easy-to-read manner: Hachiken swiftly forms friendships with Ichirō Komaba, Shinnosuke Aikawa, Tamako Inada, and Keiji Tokiwa. Since Hachiken needs to join a school club as well, he chooses the equestrian club. His classmate Aki Mikage, who Hachiken develops feelings for, is also involved in this group.
16. My Love Story!!

Takeo Gōda and Makoto Sunakawa grew up as friends, despite their striking differences in physique and personality. While Takeo masks his deep emotions beneath a large, intimidating frame, he frequently finds himself unsuccessful in love because the women he admires often choose Makoto over him. On the other hand, Makoto is exceptionally handsome but seems unaffected by the emotions he stirs up.
Takeo Gōda and Makoto Sunakawa have been friends since childhood, despite their contrasting physical and emotional traits. Takeo, a tall and imposing figure, hides his tender heart beneath his exterior, leading him to repeatedly fail in love as the women he pursues prefer Makoto instead. In stark contrast, Makoto is incredibly attractive but appears unmoved by the feelings he provokes.
One day, I find myself stepping in to shield a young woman named Rinko Yamato from an unwanted advance on the metro. Her expressions of gratitude towards me are heartwarming but she appears somewhat awkward around me, which I interpret as her being smitten with another man named Makoto. However, it seems that this time, the roles have reversed and it’s I who am the recipient of love at first sight.
17. Shakugan no Shana

A teenager named Yûji Sakai encounters an unusual event after leaving school: time seems to have stopped, and he finds himself in a state of stillness, or stasis, known as a fuzetsu . Suddenly, two monstrous beings appear, seemingly frozen in place, and they’re feeding on terrified people nearby. One of the monsters appears intrigued by Yūji’s ability to move freely, and just when it’s about to attack, a girl with an aura of fire materializes. She swiftly slashes at the monsters, a type called Rinne, as well as Yûji himself. The girl explains that Yûji is no longer alive, his soul having been replaced by a temporary stand-in, or Torch.
In the heat of our battle, my comrade Yukari Hirai seemed to vanish, replaced by nothing more than a torch. This enigma lingered among us for a while before fading away entirely after several days. Strangely enough, when I saw this transformation, I managed to salvage some of its fiery essence. Since then, I’ve found myself carrying on Yukari’s role in the human world, as my classmates now address me as Hirai, seemingly unaware of any changes from the original Hirai.
18.Wotakoi: Love Is Hard for Otaku

The show centers around the unusual romantic comedy between two office workers, one being Narumi Momose, a strict fan of boys’ love fiction who struggles to keep her interests concealed, and Hirotaka Nifuji, an attractive, skilled individual who frequently takes breaks from his gaming addiction for work. Despite their seemingly ideal match, love proves complex for these otaku characters.
19. Wolf Children

18-year-old student Hana encounters a boy at college whom she develops feelings for. He confides in her that he’s a wolfwere, the sole surviving member of an ancient Japanese wolf lineage. Despite this, they continue their relationship. When she discovers she’s pregnant, she avoids seeing him out of concern that their child might be born as a wolf.
Nine months pass, and Yuki (snow) is born on a snowy day. Exactly a year later, Ame (rain) enters the world on a rainy day. Unfortunately, soon after the birth of their son, the father vanishes. In an attempt to find him, Hana learns of her untimely demise during a hunt for food for the newborns. Despite her grief, Hana elects to raise the children by herself, a challenge given that they have the ability to transform into wolves. This isn’t an easy feat for a solitary woman, especially considering their unique nature.
Following threats of eviction from their condo owner due to suspicions of unpermitted pets and visits from social workers concerning unvaccinated kids, Hana chooses to relocate to the countryside. Her intention is to provide a trouble-free environment for her children’s upbringing and to contemplate whether they should live as humans or as wolf-like beings.
20. K-On!

The narrative of K-ON! primarily focuses on the Sakuragaoka High School Music Club. When Ritsu Tainaka enters the second year, he persuades his longtime friend Mio Akiyama to join this light music group. Yet, the club faces closure unless it manages to gather a minimum of four members.
Ritsu, who considers himself their leader, successfully brings Tsumugi Kotobuki into their group. Meanwhile, we witness Yui Hirasawa’s arrival, a vibrant young girl with an air of ambition and a strong appetite for more. Not long after, under the pressure of never fitting in if she doesn’t join, Nodoka Manabe convinces her childhood friend to become part of a club.
Eventually, Yui opts to become part of the light band, unaware of her role within it. Following this decision, she elects to study the guitar under the guidance of her new companions. Later on, Azusa joins the same group as a second guitarist.
21. Golden Time

After a car accident shortly after graduation, Tada Banri found himself memoryless. Immediately after explaining his intentions, Kōko – the girl in question – suddenly emerges before them and assures him that she’ll always remain near him. This unusual pairing catches Banri off guard, making it difficult for him to imagine Mitsuo leaving Kōko behind. As he endeavors to help Koko become more outgoing, his own past subtly resurfaces.
22. CLANNAD

As a cinephile, I’d say that CLANNAD narrates my own journey as a melancholic third-year high school student named Okazaki Tomoya. Ever since my mother passed away when I was just a kid, my father, Naoyuki, has been grappling with the grief and turned to gambling and alcohol for solace.
Tomoya chooses to limit his visits to his father’s house due to the complex dynamics, eventually adopting a reserved and unfeeling demeanor, filled with internal struggles and lacking any drive for self-improvement.
One day on his journey to school, he crosses paths with the intriguing Furukawa Nagisa, a girl who possesses unique traits that reshape his perspective of the world. This encounter marks a significant shift in his life, and from then on, a friendship unfolds between them.
Over the course of time, people encounter fresh acquaintances, diverse circumstances, novel difficulties, joyful and sorrowful incidents, which jointly lead them through extraordinary and peculiar events that help them grasp both the resilience and vulnerability inherent in existence.
23. Natsume’s Book of Friends

Natsume can see and interact with mysterious Japanese spirits known as youkai and ayakashi, which are invisible to others. As a child, he found these encounters awkward and sometimes hazardous, as the spirits often landed him in uncomfortable or even risky situations, leading him to behave in ways that people would find hard to comprehend.
Labeled as “odd,” the orphan is solitary, shunned by other kids, and bounces from one foster home to another. After another relocation, he’s pursued by strange creatures without knowing why. In an attempt to escape an assault, he stumbles into a sacred location one day, unwittingly freeing Madara, a “cat” who had been imprisoned there.
Through this meeting, Natsume uncovers the inheritance left by his grandmother Reiko – a book titled “Friends” – a notebook filled with numerous spirit names, granting him the ability to command these supernatural beings.
Embracing apprehension and puzzlement, I’ve managed to foster connections laced with reverence and camaraderie with particular supernatural beings. I embark on a journey to restore the identities of these bound spirits by returning their trapped names.
