Kendrick Lamar leads the nominations for the 2026 Grammy Awards, as revealed by the Recording Academy during a live announcement on Friday.
The rapper earned nine nominations this year, with his album GNX and the single “Luther” being recognized for album, record, and song of the year. This brings his career total to 66 nominations. He’s hoping to repeat last year’s wins, where he took home awards for record and song of the year with “Not Like Us.”
He’s up against strong competition in the main categories from artists like Lady Gaga, Bad Bunny, and Sabrina Carpenter. Lady Gaga is the second-highest nominated artist this year, with seven nominations total. Her album, Mayhem, is in the running for Album of the Year, and her song “Abracadabra” has been nominated for both Record and Song of the Year.
Both Bad Bunny and Carpenter are leading contenders at the awards. Bad Bunny’s album, DeBí TiRAR MáS FOToS, and its song “DtMF” received six nominations, including potential wins for Record and Song of the Year. Carpenter also earned six nominations, continuing his strong performance from last year, with his album Man’s Best Friend and the song “Manchild” both vying for Record and Song of the Year.
The competition for Record of the Year is strong, with artists like Lamar, Gaga, Carpenter, and Bad Bunny facing off against Doechii’s “Anxiety,” Billie Eilish’s “WILDFLOWER,” Chappell Roan’s “The Subway,” and Rosé and Bruno Mars’ song “APT.” The Song of the Year category is equally competitive, and a viral hit by KPop Demon Hunters replaced “The Subway” as a nominee.
The competition for Album of the Year also features Justin Bieber, nominated for the first time since 2022 with his album Swag. He’s up against albums like Clipse’s Let God Sort Em Out, Tyler, the Creator’s CHROMAKOPIA, and the debut album MUTT by Leon Thomas.
Thomas is nominated for six awards this year and is also in the running for best new artist, competing against Addison Rae, Sombr, Lola Young, Olivia Dean, KATSEYE, The Marias, and Alex Warren. Many people were surprised that Alex Warren’s popular song “Ordinary” and Gracie Abrams’ “That’s So True” didn’t receive nominations.
Several other artists received multiple nominations, including Clipse, SZA, Tyler, the Creator, and Turnstile, who each have five. Doechii also earned five nominations this year for her song “Anxiety,” including nods for best rap performance, best rap song, and best music video.
The awards also celebrated those behind the scenes, like producers and songwriters. Jack Antonoff received seven nominations for his work on the albums GNX and Man’s Best Friend, but wasn’t up for the Producer of the Year award. Amy Allen, who wrote all the songs on Man’s Best Friend and helped with “APT,” earned four nominations and could win Songwriter of the Year.
