A vampire horror film called Sinners is the big story heading into the Academy Awards. It just made history by receiving a record-breaking 16 nominations – more than any other film has ever received in a single year.
I can’t believe it – ‘Sinners’ just smashed the record for most nominations! Previously, movies like ‘All About Eve,’ ‘Titanic,’ and ‘La La Land’ held the record at 14, but ‘Sinners’ blew past that! A new award for best casting definitely helped, which is awesome. Honestly, it’s huge for a horror movie to get this much recognition – they rarely do this well at award shows, so I’m incredibly excited for the team!
The new vampire film is currently the frontrunner, performing better than any other movie. Leonardo DiCaprio’s thriller, ‘One Battle After Another,’ is a close second with 13 potential wins. While ‘Sinners’ explores the issue of racism in the American South, the film in second place tells the story of someone fighting against a harsh government within the United States.
Michael B. Jordan stars in ‘Sinners,’ playing twin brothers who return to Mississippi in the 1930s with plans to open a music club. However, their venture is threatened when they come under attack by vampires. The film has received several Academy Award nominations, including Michael B. Jordan for Best Actor, Wunmi Mosaku for Best Supporting Actress, and Ryan Coogler for Best Director. It’s also in contention for the top prize: Best Picture.
Another film, ‘One Battle After Another,’ is also getting a lot of attention from acting nominees. Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated for best actor, and several supporting actors—Benicio Del Toro, Sean Penn, and Teyana Taylor—received nominations as well. Paul Thomas Anderson is also in the running for best director.
Several other well-known actors are also vying for awards. Timothée Chalamet is trying for his first win after being nominated three times for his role in Marty Supreme. Jessie Buckley, an Irish actress, is the favorite to win best actress for her performance in Hamnet, though her co-star Paul Mescal, who played Shakespeare in the film, wasn’t nominated.
Several films didn’t have a good start to nominations season. Notably, ‘Wicked: For Good’ received no nominations, and its stars, Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, were also overlooked.
Despite leading in nominations, Sinners isn’t guaranteed to win Best Picture. Historically, the most-nominated film only wins the top prize about 30% of the time. One Battle After Another has been the frontrunner for a while and remains a strong contender to take home the award.
As a huge movie fan, I’m so excited to see Warner Bros. dominating the box office with the top two films! It’s fantastic news for them, especially since there’s all this talk about the studio potentially being bought by Netflix – we’ll know soon who the new owner will be. I’m already looking forward to the awards show where they’ll be recognized, it’s happening in Hollywood on March 15th!
