Replacing an actor is a big gamble for any show, as viewers often become fond of the original performer. However, sometimes a change is unavoidable due to conflicts or creative disagreements, and the new actor can actually improve the role. A new face can inject fresh energy or better on-screen chemistry, ultimately helping the show succeed. These successful recastings demonstrate that change isn’t always negative for a television series.
‘Seinfeld’ (1989–1998)

John Randolph first played Frank Costanza, but Jerry Stiller quickly became known for the role. Stiller’s energetic and loud performance instantly made Frank George’s father, and turned him into one of the most beloved TV sitcom parents ever. The show’s creators even re-filmed the original episode with Stiller to make sure everything matched up for viewers watching repeats. Now, it’s hard to picture the show without his famous outbursts and unpredictable actions.
‘Family Guy’ (1999–Present)

Lacey Chabert first voiced Meg Griffin in the popular animated series, but Mila Kunis later took over the role and became strongly associated with the character. Kunis’s performance allowed the show’s writers to explore how much hardship Meg could face for laughs, and her voice blended perfectly with the rest of the Griffin family. This change is widely considered one of the smoothest voice actor replacements in animated television.
‘Game of Thrones’ (2011–2019)

Initially, Daario Naharis was played by Ed Skrein, and his appearance was quite different. When Michiel Huisman took over the role in season four, he brought a more appealing and relatable quality to the character. His instant connection with Emilia Clarke made their romantic storyline more convincing. Huisman’s portrayal of the mercenary – loyal and self-assured – greatly benefited the show, and helped to stabilize the plot in Meereen during the show’s middle seasons.
‘Friends’ (1994–2004)

Anita Barone originally played Ross’s ex-wife, Carol, when she first appeared on the show. She later left to focus on other work and was replaced by Jane Sibbett. Sibbett’s portrayal of Carol was both kind and assertive, which created a funny contrast with Ross’s anxious personality. She quickly became a popular recurring character, known for her great comedic timing and played a significant role in storylines about co-parenting and relationships throughout the series.
‘Shameless’ (2011–2021)

Jane Levy initially played Mandy Milkovich, but left the show after the first season for another opportunity. Emma Greenwell then took on the role, and brought a much darker and more realistic edge to the character. This new tone worked really well with the show’s overall mood and her complicated relationship with Lip. Greenwell’s Mandy was compelling because she showed both strength and fragility, quickly becoming a key player in the South Side storylines.
‘Arrested Development’ (2003–2019)

Alessandra Torresani first played Ann Veal, George Michael’s girlfriend, but it was a short role. Mae Whitman then took over and brilliantly transformed the character, who was originally meant to be forgettable, into a hilarious running joke. Whitman’s skill at portraying Ann as intentionally unremarkable made the Bluth family’s reactions even funnier. The show’s creator initially intended to keep recasting the role to highlight Ann’s lack of impact, but they decided to stick with Whitman because she was exceptionally good at capturing the character’s awkward comedy.
‘The Fosters’ (2013–2018)

Initially, Jake T. Austin played Jesus Foster for two seasons, but then left the show. Noah Centineo took over the role, and the writers explained the change in appearance by having the character suffer a serious injury. Centineo quickly became popular with viewers, bringing a more grown-up feel to Jesus. Fans especially loved his on-screen connection with the rest of the family and his strong acting. This new role proved to be a major breakthrough for Centineo’s career.
‘Riverdale’ (2017–2023)

Ross Butler originally played Reggie Mantle, but had to leave the show after the first season because of commitments to another project. Charles Melton then took on the role, and the writers gave Reggie a much bigger part. Melton brought a lot more personality and complexity to the character, turning him from someone who caused trouble in the background into a key figure. This allowed the show to explore more interesting stories, especially involving the football team and local businesses. Melton’s charming performance quickly made Reggie a popular character with fans.
‘Pretty Little Liars’ (2010–2017)

Parker Bagley initially played Jason DiLaurentis in the show’s first season. However, Drew Van Acker later took on the role and proved to be a better fit, bringing a captivating and mysterious quality to the character. Van Acker’s portrayal made Jason a more central figure in the show’s main mystery and created complex relationships with the other characters. He skillfully played Jason as someone who was both intimidating and relatable, and this change in actors was crucial for the show’s future plot twists.
’30 Rock’ (2006–2013)

I always loved Jane Krakowski as Jenna Maroney on 30 Rock! It’s fascinating to learn Rachel Dratch was originally cast, but honestly, I can’t imagine the show without Jane. She brought this incredible, glamorous energy and hilarious self-absorption that played perfectly off Tina Fey’s Liz Lemon. Plus, her singing and physical comedy were just essential to so many iconic moments. She truly made the character her own, and I think the show would have been completely different – and honestly, probably not as funny – without her unique take on celebrity craziness.
‘Schitt’s Creek’ (2015–2020)

I was so surprised to learn Abby Elliott was originally considered for the role of Alexis Rose! But honestly, I can’t imagine anyone but Annie Murphy playing her now. She completely made that character her own, bringing a humor and charm that went way beyond what was written. Her voice, her little movements… it was all perfect! Even though Alexis was often self-absorbed and spoiled, Annie made her so lovable and relatable. It’s no wonder everyone fell in love with her, and the critical praise and huge fanbase are totally deserved!
‘Modern Family’ (2009–2020)

For the first two seasons of the show, the role of Lily Tucker-Pritchett was shared by twin babies. When the character began to speak and needed a more developed personality, Aubrey Anderson-Emmons took over. She quickly became known for her surprisingly dry wit and confident attitude, matching the humor of the adult cast. The writers embraced her comedic timing, creating a special relationship with her on-screen dads. Anderson-Emmons continued to be an important member of the show’s cast right up to the series finale.
‘Arrow’ (2012–2020)

As a huge fan of the Arrowverse, I always found the casting of Sara Lance fascinating. Jacqueline MacInnes Wood initially played her in the pilot’s flashbacks, but it was Caity Lotz who really made the role her own when Sara returned as the Black Canary. Caity brought incredible physicality and martial arts skills to the part, instantly defining the character. Honestly, she was so popular and compelling that she ended up becoming a lead in ‘Legends of Tomorrow’! It’s amazing how she took what could have been a small character and turned her into one of the biggest heroes in the whole franchise.
‘Mad Men’ (2007–2015)

I always loved seeing Bobby Draper grow up on screen, though it was cool to see a few different kids play him at first! But honestly, Mason Vale Cotton really became Bobby. He brought so much to the role, especially as Bobby got older and had more to say. It was amazing to finally see him really interact with Don, and it let the show dive deeper into Don’s struggles as a dad. Having Mason consistently play Bobby in those later seasons really helped make the family stuff feel so much more real and grounded.
‘The Crown’ (2016–2023)

This acclaimed series uniquely built in cast changes every two seasons to show the aging of its characters. Claire Foy brilliantly played Queen Elizabeth II, followed by Olivia Colman and then Imelda Staunton. This daring decision allowed each talented actress to portray the Queen at different points in her life. The cast changes kept the story interesting and clearly demonstrated the passage of time, and viewers embraced them thanks to the consistently strong performances.
‘Doctor Who’ (1963–Present)

The key to this sci-fi show’s long run is its ability to replace the main character. When the Doctor is seriously hurt, they don’t die – they ‘regenerate’ into a new form with a different personality. This clever trick lets the show stay fresh and exciting while still keeping a consistent storyline. New actors, like Tom Baker and David Tennant, have often brought a surge in viewers when they’ve taken on the role, and the reveal of who will play the Doctor next is a major cultural event.
‘My Wife and Kids’ (2001–2005)

Initially, Jazz Raycole played Claire, but Jennifer Freeman took over the role in the first season. Freeman brought a unique comedic style that fit the writers’ vision of a funny, yet endearing character. She and Damon Wayans had great on-screen chemistry, creating many memorable and humorous father-daughter scenes. After Freeman joined the show, the character became a bigger source of comedy, and most fans now consider her the definitive Claire.
‘Boy Meets World’ (1993–2000)

In the beginning of the show, Lily Nicksay played the youngest sister, Morgan Matthews. Later, after the character was absent for a while, Lindsay Ridgeway took over the role. The show playfully acknowledged this change with a joke when Ridgeway first reappeared. As the series focused more on teenage characters, Ridgeway naturally stepped into the older version of Morgan, often serving as a witty and sarcastic contrast to her brothers.
‘Spartacus’ (2010–2013)

Andy Whitfield initially played the main character, but sadly passed away after the first season. Liam McIntyre took on the difficult task of replacing him. He paid tribute to Whitfield’s portrayal while also making the role his own, bringing a strong physical presence to the character. McIntyre skillfully carried the emotional heart of the show through to its final episode, and fans appreciated his commitment to completing the story Whitfield had started.
‘Sense8’ (2015–2018)

Aml Ameen first played Capheus in the sci-fi series, but Toby Onwumere took over the role starting with the second season and continuing through the show’s finale. Onwumere’s portrayal brought a hopeful and kind energy to the character as he developed into a leader. His scenes, both romantic and action-packed, felt genuine and supported the show’s focus on human connection. The change in actors was seamlessly integrated into the story.
