Honestly, grappling hooks just make games feel so much better. They turn everything into a potential way to get around or get out of trouble – a wall becomes a launchpad, a tough spot becomes an easy escape. I’ve seen them used for everything from quickly crossing gaps and linking attacks together, to totally changing how you explore a level. Some are basic get-around tools, but the really good ones let you do crazy damage, control enemies, or even solve puzzles. I’m going to show you some examples of how a well-designed grapple hook can completely transform a game.
‘Batman: Arkham Knight’

The Grapnel allows you to quickly reach ledges, jump off surfaces, and link together boosts while gliding to stay in the air as you move around the city. It also helps with stealth, letting you quickly reach high spots like gargoyles for quiet takedowns. During fights, the Grapnel lets you escape and move around easily when things get hectic. Upgrading it increases your speed and reach, making both exploration and stealth encounters feel smooth and natural.
‘Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice’

The shinobi prosthetic’s grapple hook lets you quickly reach rooftops, tree branches, and even the areas where you fight bosses, making vertical movement a key part of how you play. It allows for sneaky routes over enemy patrols and provides escape options during battles, letting you create space to heal or trick opponents. Items like firecrackers and shurikens work well with the grapple’s range. Plus, many battle arenas are designed with swing points in mind, so mastering timing and momentum is crucial for success in every fight.
‘Halo Infinite’

The Grappleshot lets you quickly move around by attaching to almost anything – the environment, vehicles, or even enemies. You can use it to pull weapons to yourself, steal a Banshee, or briefly stun tougher enemies to get closer. In multiplayer, you need to manage its limited uses and recharge time carefully. When playing the campaign, you can upgrade the Grappleshot to recharge faster and add a stunning electrical effect, opening up new ways to defeat enemies.
‘Apex Legends’

Legends like Pathfinder, Horizon, and Valkyrie all use grappling abilities in unique ways. Pathfinder’s grapple helps him swing around to gain better positioning and create openings for his team. Controlling the speed and direction of his swing is key. Horizon and Valkyrie complement Pathfinder by adding more ways to move vertically, allowing the whole team to quickly rotate to new locations. Smart use of ziplines and managing their cooldowns can be crucial for winning fights and getting into good positions as the playable area shrinks.
‘Titanfall 2’

The Grapple transforms how you move, letting you swing, slide, and run on walls – all connected by a cable. Expert players can keep up their speed by timing their releases and reattaching while in the air. It also lets you quickly jump onto Titans for attacks or escape dangerous situations. Mastering the Grapple requires understanding how to maintain momentum and knowing the map well, whether you’re playing the campaign or multiplayer.
‘Just Cause 3’

Rico’s grapple can attach to almost anything, letting you connect objects and create mayhem. You can use it to swing across gaps, and his parachute and wingsuit help him stay airborne longer. With multiple grapple lines, you can even pull down buildings or slam vehicles around. Because the grapple is always ready, you’re constantly finding new ways to move and solve problems.
‘Monster Hunter Rise’

Wirebugs grant hunters two quick mid-air dashes, useful for both moving around and attacking. They also power Silkbind Attacks, which let you chain attacks in the air or quickly evade enemy strikes. If you get knocked down, Wirefall lets you recover and reposition instantly. You can also use Wirebugs to quickly climb and travel between areas using environmental anchor points.
‘Dying Light’

The grappling hook in the late game allows you to grab onto ledges and swing across gaps, maintaining the smooth movement of parkour. Even when you run out of stamina, it helps you recover and provides a way to escape during nighttime chases. A cooldown timer prevents you from using it constantly, so you still need to think about your path. It’s especially useful for quickly reaching safe areas and collecting items in taller parts of the city.
‘Assassin’s Creed Syndicate’

The rope launcher lets you quickly create zip lines between buildings or scale high walls. This helps you escape chases faster and move stealthily above street level. It also opens up new entry points to secure areas from rooftops, where there are typically fewer guards, and gives you vertical escape routes during carriage chases, allowing for more flexible planning.
‘Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End’

Use a rope hook to swing between designated points, seamlessly transitioning into climbing and combat. Control your momentum to swing further or quickly launch into close-quarters attacks after landing. Solve puzzles by utilizing the rope’s physics to pull levers and move objects. Experience dynamic set pieces that combine driving, sliding, and grappling to create exciting, movie-like pathways.
‘Metroid Dread’

The Grapple Beam lets Samus swing across magnetic surfaces and break through certain barriers. It can also be combined with Shine Spark routes to gain extra momentum and reach new areas. During boss fights, it allows for quick movement and the removal of obstacles by connecting to special grapple points. Plus, Samus can use the beam to pull platforms and create new pathways.
‘The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time’

The Hookshot, and its improved version, lets Link quickly reach targets and chests. It can also briefly stun some enemies. In dungeons, you’ll use it to cross gaps and climb high towers. It’s helpful for grabbing items from a distance, like Skulltulas, without triggering traps. In battles, the Hookshot allows you to safely attack enemies that are flying or protected by shields.
‘The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess’

Double Clawshots let you swing across large gaps by connecting to multiple targets without landing. They transform vertical challenges into opportunities for aerial movement and mid-air connections. Solving puzzles with them requires precise timing and aiming to maintain your swing. You can also use them to disable traps or move objects, unlocking new paths.
‘Worms Armageddon’

Okay, so the Ninja Rope is basically a grappling hook, but it’s all about skill. It’s got realistic swinging and you can even re-attach it mid-swing, which is awesome. I’ve been using it to fly around the maps without wasting any of my other movement abilities. If you’re good, you can land perfectly with mines or dynamite. And trust me, once you start learning advanced stuff like rope kicks and bouncing off walls, it opens up a whole new level of movement options. It’s seriously deep!
‘Overwatch 2’

Widowmaker quickly reaches high ground with her grapple, letting her change positions and get clear shots, while Wrecking Ball uses his swings to move fast and control space. Both heroes have limits on how often they can use these abilities, so using them at the right moments in a fight is key. Widowmaker’s grapple also influences how players move around maps, creating opportunities to flank enemies or protect teammates. Wrecking Ball can use his momentum and powerful slams to quickly eliminate opponents or start team fights.
‘Ori and the Will of the Wisps’

The Grapple allows you to quickly swing around levels and fight enemies by attaching to both plants and opponents. It works seamlessly with moves like Bash and Dash, letting you create long, flowing aerial combos. Boss battles happen in arenas designed to keep you moving through the air while avoiding attacks. As you discover key anchor points, you can unlock shortcuts and find faster routes.
‘Bionic Commando Rearmed’

This character moves around using a robotic arm instead of jumping – it swings and pulls them to ledges. Skillfully using the arm means timing releases to maintain speed across gaps and climb vertically. You can also use it to grab objects and activate switches remotely. The game’s levels are designed to first show you how to swing effectively, then challenge you with more complex swinging maneuvers.
‘Fortnite’

The Grappler and Grapple Glove are items that let players quickly gain height and swing between buildings. This gives them an advantage in build battles by letting them immediately reach high ground, and helps them escape fights in modes where building isn’t allowed. However, these items have limited uses and take up valuable inventory space, so players must consider if the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. The available grapple items also change regularly with each new season, altering how players can move around.
‘Ghostrunner’

Use tethers to swing across dangerous areas and quickly climb walls, creating a fast-paced parkour sequence where one hit is all it takes to eliminate enemies. Combine grappling hooks with quick dashes and slowdown effects for precise and deadly movements. The game encourages you to practice and refine your route with checkpoints, aiming for a smooth, flawless run. Enemy positions and grapple points are designed to help you find the quickest path, perfect for speedrunning.
‘Horizon Forbidden West’

The Pullcaster is a versatile tool that works as both a grappling hook and a way to force open vents or pull yourself towards climbing holds. When used with the Shieldwing, it allows you to quickly transition from climbing up walls to gliding. Throughout the environment, you’ll find hidden panels you can pull to uncover shortcuts and valuable items. In battles, you can use anchor points with the Pullcaster to quickly move around and outflank enemy machines.
