The 1966 Batman TV show, known for its over-the-top style, played a huge role in making the character a lasting cultural icon. Before the show, DC Comics was actually thinking about ending the Detective Comics series. But suddenly, Batman comics began selling millions of copies, all thanks to the show’s popularity. While many actors have played Batman since then, Adam West and Burt Ward are still remembered as definitive portrayals of the hero. Recently, The Hollywood Reporter announced that costumes from the show – including those worn by Batman and Robin, as well as Batgirl, the Joker, Penguin, and Catwoman – sold for almost a million dollars. The entire Batman collection ultimately earned $989,500.
As a huge fan of classic TV, I was blown away by the recent Heritage Auctions sale of Dr. Stewart Berkowitz’s collection. Dr. Berkowitz was an early adopter of eBay and sadly passed away earlier this year, leaving behind an incredible trove of memorabilia. The auction was full of amazing costumes, the kind that would make any serious collector’s jaw drop. One of the highlights was a Wonder Woman costume actually worn by Lynda Carter, complete with her lasso – it went for $225,000! And for Star Trek fans, two of William Shatner’s Captain Kirk costumes were sold: his regular uniform for $62,500 and the unforgettable evil Kirk costume from “Mirror, Mirror” for $52,500. It was a truly epic auction!

It’s clear the person who originally owned these items was a big fan of classic sixties and seventies TV shows. Along with costumes from Batman and Star Trek, the auction included pieces from shows like I Dream of Jeanie, The Munsters, and Happy Days. According to Joe Maddalena, Executive VP at Heritage Auctions, the auction celebrated a golden age of television, built from the owner’s genuine love for the shows and characters that shaped a generation. Hopefully, the new owners will cherish these pieces of 20th-century pop culture as much as the original collector did.
