Occasionally, a television program that we’re fond of may take us by surprise with an unexpected twist – a well-known actor switching characters. This could be due to scheduling issues, creative decisions, or personal matters, but these recasts can bring about a shift within the series and require us to get accustomed to a fresh face occupying a cherished role.
Delving into various genres of television, from comedies to intense dramas, it’s not uncommon for roles to be reassigned during production. Here, we delve into 18 cases where actors were replaced mid-series, examining their departures and how the newcomers took over, ensuring the show continued its run smoothly.
1. Ed Skrein
In the TV series ‘Game of Thrones’ (2011-2019), Ed Skrein portrayed the character Daario Naharis, a charismatic mercenary who was an ally to Daenerys Targaryen. His convincing performance established the character’s demeanor in season three.
1) After appearing in only three episodes, Skrein departed due to conflicting ideologies with the production crew. In the fourth season, Michiel Huisman stepped in to portray Daario Naharis, introducing a new dynamic that emphasized his expanding role as a trusted confidant and romantic interest.
2. Ross Butler
In the initial season of ‘Riverdale’ (2017-2023), Ross Butler embodied the role of Reggie Mantle, the confident athlete character. His portrayal of Reggie provided a strong contrast to Archie Andrews.
Because of scheduling clashes with ’13 Reasons Why’, Butler had to withdraw from the role. However, Charles Melton took over for season two, winning over fans with his captivating and multi-dimensional portrayal until the series concluded.
3. Anita Barone
In one episode of “Friends” (1994-2004), Anita Barone portrayed Carol, Ross’s former spouse, which provided insight into their relationship dynamics.
Barone departed to seek larger acting opportunities, and from then on, Jane Sibbett assumed the role of Carol throughout the remainder of the show. Most viewers hardly recognized the change due to Sibbett’s heartfelt performance.
4. Santino Fontana
In the TV series ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ (2015-2019), Santino Fontana portrayed Greg Serrano, a charming yet sarcastic romantic interest for the main character, Rebecca Bunch. The dynamic between them was particularly captivating in the early seasons.
In the third season, Fontana’s character was no longer part of the series. However, Greg made a comeback in season four, this time portrayed by Skylar Astin. Astin infused the role with a more playful and self-assured demeanor, aligning perfectly with the show’s self-referential humor about recasting characters.
5. Ruby Rose
In the first season of ‘Batwoman’ (2019-2022), Ruby Rose played the lead character, Kate Kane. Her powerful portrayal established the dark and gripping atmosphere of the series.
Rose departed following news about challenging work environments. In her place stepped Wallis Day, portraying the character of Kate, while Javicia Leslie debuted as a fresh Batwoman, Ryan Wilder, who propelled the show ahead for another couple of seasons.
6. Conan Stevens
In the first season of ‘Game of Thrones’ (2011-2019), Conan Stevens embodied the intimidating character, Ser Gregor Clegane, more famously known as The Mountain. His towering stature perfectly matched the ferocity of the ruthless knight.
In the second season, the role of Stevens as a stuntman was taken over by Ian Whyte, and starting from the fourth season, Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson assumed the part. It was Björnsson’s imposing physique that made The Mountain an unforgettable character in subsequent seasons.
7. Lisa Robin Kelly
In the TV series ‘That ’70s Show’ (1998-2006), Lisa Robin Kelly vividly portrayed Laurie Forman, Eric’s free-spirited sister. Her lively essence marked the character from the beginning.
In my perspective as a movie reviewer, I’d say: After facing some personal challenges, the character Kelly departed at the end of season three. Enter Christina Moore, who brought a more subdued version of Laurie to life during her six-episode stint in season six.
8. Jane Levy
In the initial season of ‘Shameless’ (2011-2021), Jane Levy played Mandy Milkovich, a resilient teenager who was involved with the unruly Gallagher family. Her portrayal mirrored the turbulent narrative perfectly.
In ‘Suburgatory’, Levy departed to take on a leading part. Emma Greenwell stepped into the role of Mandy during season two, adding depth to the character’s emotional aspects until her departure at the end of season six.
9. Alexandra Krosney
In my opinion, during the debut season of ‘Last Man Standing’ (2011-2021), Alexandra Krosney perfectly embodied the character of Kristin Baxter, the eldest daughter. She infused the role with a vibrant, youthful energy that really made her portrayal of a single mom stand out.
Differences in creative approach resulted in Krosney leaving the show. Starting from the second season, Amanda Fuller took over and provided a more realistic perspective that remained consistent throughout the show’s duration.
10. Molly Ephraim
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I had the pleasure of portraying Mandy Baxter in ‘Last Man Standing’ from 2011 to 2021, spanning an impressive six seasons. My sharp and lively portrayal of Mandy truly set her apart within the Baxter clan.
After getting canceled, the show shifted to Fox, but Ephraim’s other obligations kept her from coming back. Instead, Molly McCook stepped in, infusing Mandy’s character with a new, refreshing take on comedy.
11. Janet Hubert
For three seasons, from 1990 to 1996, Janet Hubert portrayed the lively Aunt Vivian in ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’. She was instrumental in keeping the Banks family grounded with her strong presence.
The disagreement over a contract caused Hubert to leave the show, and starting from the fourth season, Daphne Maxwell Reid took his place as Vivian. Her more nurturing portrayal of the character helped guide the series towards its conclusion.
12. Bailey Bass
In the first season of ‘Interview with the Vampire’ (2022-present), Bailey Bass took on the role of Claudia, the young vampire. Her chilling portrayal established a powerful atmosphere.
Due to scheduling issues, the bass character had to step down. However, in season two, Delainey Hayles stepped into the role, adding a fresh layer of complexity to Claudia’s tragic storyline.
13. Jake T. Austin
Jake T. Austin starred as Jesus Foster on ‘The Fosters’ (2013-2018) for a span of two seasons. His acting skillfully depicted the character’s challenges and development throughout this period.
Austin departed because of artistic disagreements regarding diminished on-screen minutes. In the third season, Noah Centineo took over from where Jesus’s narrative was left off, seeing it through until the conclusion of the show.
14. Aml Ameen
In the initial season of ‘Sense8′ (2015-2018), Aml Ameen portrayed Capheus, a compassionate bus driver who was a vital part of the series’ diverse cast. His kindness served as a significant element in the show.
A disagreement over creative aspects resulted in Ameis leaving the project. Instead, Toby Onwumere stepped in for the Christmas special and the second season, preserving the optimistic persona of Capheus.
15. Dick York
For five seasons, between 1964 and 1972, Dick York portrayed the character of Darrin Stevens on the popular television show ‘Bewitched’. His impeccable comic delivery significantly contributed to the success of the enchanting sitcom.
Due to health problems stemming from a spinal injury, York had to depart. Subsequently, Dick Sargent took over the role of Darrin, bringing his unique appeal to it until the series concluded.
16. Shailene Woodley
In the initial seasons of ‘The O.C.’ (2003-2007), Shailene Woodley portrayed Kaitlin Cooper, a role that perfectly matched her lively spirit and fit the part of the playful younger sibling.
In the subsequent seasons, Willa Holland replaced Kaitlin, infusing her character with a stronger, more defiant personality.
17. Laura Benanti
In the initial two seasons of ‘Supergirl’ (2015-2021), Laura Benanti portrayed Alura Zor-El, who was Kara’s mother. Her noble demeanor perfectly matched the role of a Kryptonian matriarch.
Due to her obligations on Broadway, Benanti had to leave the show. However, for season three, Erica Durance, famously seen in ‘Smallville’, took over as Alura, bringing a new perspective to the character.
18. Alessandra Torresani
In the first season of ‘Arrested Development’ from 2003 to 2019, Alessandra Torresani portrayed Ann Veal, a character whose unremarkable personality perfectly complemented the series’ recurring joke.
The part was re-assigned to Mae Whitman, who embraced Ann’s unmemorable trait, transforming her into a comic mainstay during subsequent seasons.
