Superhero stories typically center around a hero learning to use their powers and protecting the world. But often, the supporting characters are just as memorable, offering humor or special abilities. These sidekicks provide crucial emotional support and lighten the mood when things get intense. Sometimes, they’re so popular they even become more beloved than the main hero. Here’s a look at some sidekicks who have truly shined.
‘Kick-Ass’ (2010)

Hit-Girl, played by Mindy Macready, immediately grabs your attention with her striking appearance and incredible fighting abilities – she’s far more skilled than the hero, Kick-Ass. The shocking thing is, she’s just a kid, and she fights with incredible violence and uses very strong language. Many viewers actually find her story more interesting than the main plot. Chloë Grace Moretz’s performance is a key part of what makes the film’s action feel so raw and realistic.
‘Thor: Ragnarok’ (2017)

Korg, a gladiator from the planet Krona, is a funny contrast to the serious, end-of-the-world events happening in the story. Director Taika Waititi voices Korg with a gentle New Zealand accent, which is surprising given his stone-like appearance. Korg consistently provides comic relief as Thor faces challenges on Sakaar. Despite not being on screen as much as Thor, he quickly became a popular character with fans. Many still remember his joke about printing revolutionary pamphlets – it’s one of the most iconic lines in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
‘Ant-Man’ (2015)

Michael Peña is fantastic as Luis, Scott Lang’s old cellmate and close friend. He’s a scene-stealer thanks to his incredibly fast and funny way of telling stories. The movies show these stories through hilarious flashbacks where the actors lip-sync to his narration. Even with all the danger the team faces, Luis stays positive and is always ready to lend a hand. His childlike wonder about superheroes is infectious and mirrors how the audience feels.
‘Deadpool’ (2016)

Okay, so Dopinder starts out as this really sweet, unassuming taxi driver, and then BAM – he’s suddenly thrown headfirst into Deadpool’s insane life. What I loved watching was how he completely changes. He goes from being totally shocked by all the craziness happening in his backseat to actually wanting to learn from Wade, becoming a sort of protégé. It’s hilarious because he still seems so innocent, even while things get super violent. And honestly, he really steps up when it counts, proving he’s not just a bystander but a genuinely loyal and brave ally. The fans, myself included, are obsessed with his journey – it’s a fantastic character arc!
‘Doctor Strange’ (2016)

Benedict Wong plays the librarian of Kamar-Taj with a serious and reserved demeanor, which contrasts nicely with Stephen Strange. He’s a practical character who always follows the rules of magic. Over time, we see Wong has a hidden sense of humor and enjoys pop culture, making him more complex. He eventually becomes the Sorcerer Supreme and an important link to other stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He frequently keeps Strange’s ego in check with his direct and straightforward approach.
‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ (2017)

Jacob Batalon plays Ned Leeds, Peter Parker’s best friend, who jokingly refers to himself as the “guy in the chair.” Ned quickly finds out Peter is Spider-Man and excitedly wants to help with his superhero activities. He offers crucial tech support and lots of encouragement. Throughout the movie, his dedication to building a Lego Death Star adds a fun, relatable touch. The relationship between Ned and Peter feels like a genuine high school friendship.
‘The Green Hornet’ (1966–1967)

Bruce Lee became famous for his role as Kato in this popular TV series. He was such a skilled martial artist that he often drew more attention than the Green Hornet, the show’s main hero. People specifically watched the show to see Lee’s incredible speed and stunts. In some countries, the show was even advertised as ‘The Kato Show’ because of his popularity. This role was key in making Bruce Lee a global star.
‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ (2014)

Peter Maximoff’s escape from the Pentagon is a truly memorable scene. The filmmakers cleverly use slow-motion and fast-motion effects to show his super speed, putting the audience right in his shoes. As he effortlessly moves through the chaos, listening to music, it’s a visually stunning moment and arguably the best part of the film. Evan Peters plays the character with a confident, almost mischievous energy that immediately wins viewers over.
‘Captain Marvel’ (2019)

Goose, a seemingly ordinary orange tabby cat, is surprisingly an alien called a Flerken. This means he can unleash dangerous tentacles from his mouth to defeat his enemies! Nick Fury grows fond of Goose, but quickly learns to be careful around him. In a shocking turn of events, Goose actually swallows the Tesseract and ends up being crucial to saving the day. He consistently steals the show from the other characters whenever he’s on screen.
‘Logan’ (2017)

Dafne Keen powerfully plays the young mutant Laura, bringing a similar intensity to the role as Hugh Jackman did with Wolverine. Despite limited dialogue, she expertly communicates deep feelings and anger. Her fighting style, which includes claws on her feet, reflects the wildness of her father. The connection she develops with Logan is the heart of the movie, and critics especially loved her performance in this tough, realistic superhero story.
‘The Dark Knight’ (2008)

Michael Caine beautifully portrays Bruce Wayne’s butler, bringing both wisdom and a relatable human quality to the character. He’s more than just a servant; he’s Batman’s conscience, often making him think about the impact of his choices. His thoughtful speeches about criminals are some of the most memorable moments in the movies. Alfred genuinely cares for Bruce and is his main connection to a normal life, often carrying a lot of the films’ emotional impact.
‘Deadpool 2’ (2018)

Shioli Kutsuna portrays Yukio, a bubbly mutant ninja who enthusiastically welcomes Deadpool. Her cheerful personality is a funny counterpoint to the movie’s dark humor and action. During the final battle, she teams up with Negasonic Teenage Warhead, showcasing her powerful electric skills. Fans especially loved her running joke of simply saying “Hi Wade.” She brings a welcome bit of levity to the group.
‘Wonder Woman’ (2017)

Lucy Davis is wonderful as Etta Candy, Steve Trevor’s secretary. She guides Diana Prince through London society during World War I, offering a funny and down-to-earth perspective on the limitations placed on women at the time. Etta is also surprisingly courageous and capable, especially when she’s responsible for safeguarding valuable items. Her honest reactions to Diana’s extraordinary nature are consistently entertaining and memorable.
‘The Incredibles’ (2004)

Okay, let me tell you about Frozone – or Lucius Best, as he’s known to his friends. This guy is cool – literally! He can create ice from moisture, and he’s the perfect calm counterpoint to Mr. Incredible’s… enthusiasm. Samuel L. Jackson absolutely nails the voice work; he brings such smooth charisma to the role, making Frozone instantly iconic. Seriously, everyone quotes his desperate plea for his super suit! And when things hit the fan in the final battle with the Omnidroid, Frozone shows up just when the Parr family needs him most. What I really loved, though, was how the movie balanced his superhero life with the relatable humor of his everyday domestic struggles. It made him a really well-rounded and memorable character.
‘The Tick’ (2016–2019)

I’m really captivated by Griffin Newman’s portrayal of Arthur Everest in this new series! He plays a wonderfully complex character—someone clearly struggling with inner demons who doesn’t exactly jump at the chance to be a hero. What I love most is how the show doesn’t shy away from his past trauma, but instead shows his journey of healing and becoming the person he’s meant to be. He’s the heart of the story, really, making even the wildest parts feel genuine. And honestly, watching him take flight in that moth suit? It’s just such a powerful symbol of him finding his strength. It’s brilliant.
