15 Shonen Series That Made the Rival Ship Gayer Than the Main Romance

Shonen anime usually centers around exciting action, strong friendships, and a young male character’s quest to become the very best at something. While romance might be present, it’s often less important than the intense connections formed through fighting and teamwork. The competitive relationship between the main character and their rival often gets more focus and emotional depth than any romantic pairings. Many fans actually feel there’s more chemistry and passion between these rivals than between the intended love interests, creating a dynamic where it’s hard to tell where rivalry ends and romance begins.

‘Naruto’ (2002–2007)

Naruto Uzumaki is far more focused on his complex relationship with his friend and rival, Sasuke Uchiha, than on any romantic interest. An early, unexpected kiss solidifies their deep connection. Their climactic fight emphasizes their bond, showing them reaching for each other, exhausted and side-by-side. This intense connection between Naruto and Sasuke is actually more central to the story than Naruto’s eventual marriage to Hinata Hyuga.

‘My Hero Academia’ (2016–Present)

Izuku Midoriya and Katsuki Bakugo have a complicated relationship that starts with Bakugo bullying Midoriya, but eventually grows into a strong, competitive respect. Midoriya especially wants to fix things with Bakugo, even more than with most other people. Bakugo later gives a heartfelt apology, showing how much their connection means to him. When they fight together in the series and movies, they work together so well that many fans see it as a sign of romantic feelings.

‘Hunter x Hunter’ (2011–2014)

Throughout most of the series, Gon and Killua function as a close pair. Killua often sees Gon as a guiding force, especially when he’s struggling. The Chimera Ant arc really shows how much Killua cares for Gon, becoming deeply upset when Gon is in danger. This strong bond between them is more prominent than any romantic interests shown for either character.

‘Seraph of the End’ (2015)

Mikaela Hyakuya is completely focused on protecting Yuichiro Hyakuya from both humans and vampires. A powerful vampire develops a unique attachment to Yuichiro, refusing to feed on anyone else and creating a charged, emotional connection. Yuichiro repeatedly expresses that Mikaela is the most important thing in his life. The story primarily revolves around their eventual reunion, overshadowing the roles of the female characters who are interested in them.

‘Death Note’ (2006–2007)

Light Yagami and L Lawliet are locked in a clever, intense rivalry that physically connects them for much of the story. In a surprisingly vulnerable moment, L confesses to Light that he considers him his first friend, referencing a biblical scene while doing so. The intense connection between them goes far beyond any romantic feelings Light pretends to have for Misa Amane. This deeply personal psychological battle is what truly makes the series memorable.

‘Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters’ (2000–2004)

Seto Kaiba dedicates his life to beating Yugi Muto and the Pharaoh Atem. He even develops holographic technology as a way to continue dueling Yugi even after Yugi is gone. Kaiba prioritizes this rivalry over all other connections, making his obsession with Yugi far more captivating than his relationship with Téa Gardner.

‘Black Clover’ (2017–2021)

Asta and Yuno were raised together in an orphanage and made a pact to both strive to become the Wizard King. Despite being rivals, they consistently encourage and admire each other. Yuno isn’t interested in romantic pursuits, as he’s completely focused on Asta’s journey. The story portrays their friendship as the strongest bond in the entire kingdom.

‘Haikyu!!’ (2014–2020)

Shoyo Hinata and Tobio Kageyama become a powerful attacking team, but their success depends on complete trust. Kageyama learns to work with Hinata, softening his often bossy approach to better suit his teammate’s strengths. The story emphasizes their development as partners, as they push each other to improve. Their bond as teammates is actually more central and meaningful than any romantic relationships in the series.

‘Dragon Ball Z’ (1989–1996)

Vegeta’s journey from enemy to friend is mainly driven by his ambition to become stronger than Goku. He frequently neglects his own family, focusing instead on training or watching Goku fight in important battles. During the Buu Saga, Vegeta openly admits he respects and admires Goku, revealing a surprisingly personal side. This competitive relationship has been a defining aspect of the series from beginning to end.

‘Blue Lock’ (2022–Present)

Seishiro Nagi and Reo Mikage are deeply reliant on each other, and this connection is what first motivates them to play soccer. Reo is devastated when Nagi chooses to play with Isagi instead, and their resulting separation and eventual attempt to reconnect are portrayed with the intense emotion often seen in romantic stories. For many viewers, their complex relationship becomes more central to the story than the soccer itself.

‘Kuroko’s Basketball’ (2012–2015)

Tetsuya Kuroko wants to show off his unique basketball style by helping Taiga Kagami become Japan’s top player. Kagami agrees to be Kuroko’s partner, working together as a powerful duo on the court. ‘Slam Dunk’ (1993–1996)

Hanamichi Sakuragi first joined the basketball team hoping to win over a girl, but he soon became more driven by his intense rivalry with Kaede Rukawa. Throughout the series, Rukawa remains Sakuragi’s main focus and the driving force behind his efforts. The emotional peak of the anime comes with a final high-five between these two longtime rivals, and their complex relationship ultimately becomes more central to the story than Sakuragi’s original romantic interest.

‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’ (2012–Present)

Joseph Joestar and Caesar Zeppeli begin as rivals but forge a deep connection while learning Hamon together. Caesar ultimately sacrifices himself to ensure Joseph gets the medicine he needs to live. Joseph’s heartfelt grief over Caesar’s death is one of the most moving moments in the series. Their friendship is more impactful than any of Joseph’s short-lived romantic interests.

‘Fairy Tail’ (2009–2019)

Natsu and Gray are always arguing because Natsu uses fire magic and Gray uses ice magic – they’re complete opposites! But underneath all the bickering, they deeply care for each other and would risk anything for one another. The story often teams them up for big fights, and they work together seamlessly. In fact, their close friendship gets more focus than either of their romantic relationships.

‘REBORN!’ (2006–2010)

Tsuna Sawada assembles a team of dedicated guardians who are completely loyal to him as the future head of the Vongola family. Characters like Gokudera Hayato are fiercely devoted to Tsuna, even becoming jealous of anyone who gets close to him.
