In simpler terms, Wanda Maximoff, or Scarlet Witch, is renowned for being one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel Comics universe, both in the comics and the movies. Her capabilities are almost boundless, yet she struggles with managing and utilizing her powers effectively. However, when it comes to facing formidable adversaries, there’s no one else you’d rather have by your side than Scarlet Witch.
Let’s dive right in! Here’s a listing of the top 15 formidable foes that Scarlet Witch encountered or overcame, either acting solo or with assistance. Regardless of the circumstances, her contributions were instrumental in their eventual downfall.
15. Namor The Submariner
As a passionate film enthusiast and comic book connoisseur, I’d love to share some fascinating trivia about one of Marvel’s earliest creations – Namor the Sub-Mariner. This iconic character first splashed onto the scene in 1939, making him one of the oldest superheroes ever dreamed up by Marvel Comics. Not only was he the very first mutant to grace the pages of Marvel comics, but he’s also an extraordinary Atlantean-human hybrid.
Living deep beneath the waves in the underwater city of Atlantis, Namor possesses awe-inspiring abilities that would make any landlubber green with envy. His superhuman strength and speed are especially impressive when he’s swimming underwater. Moreover, his unique connection with aquatic creatures allows him to communicate seamlessly with the denizens of the deep sea world.
In the Avengers versus X-Men narrative, when he came up against Scarlet Witch, his abilities became more potent because he belonged to the Phoenix Five. Among mutants, she was dreaded, which is why Namor and their team sought to eliminate her.
Initially, Namor suffered an effortless defeat in their first battle, subsequently launching a war against Wakanda out of vengeance. However, even when Scarlet Witch arrived on the scene, it wasn’t just Namor she overpowered – she managed to subdue the entire Atlantean population instead. If anything, this demonstrates the remarkable power that Scarlet Witch possesses.
14. Ahab

In a slightly different wording: Ahab is an unusual figure, yet there’s no denying his strength – particularly when it comes to dealing with mutants. This character hails from Earth-811 and is a future geneticist who becomes a villain due to his belief that mutants were the cause of global destruction.
Essentially, Ahab created the Hound Program, a system that enabled time travel and the hunt for mutants. Once found, these mutants were genetically altered, turning them into Ahab’s personal hounds, which he could command and utilize their abilities. Among these transformed hounds were Scott Summers, Sue Storm, and other powerful mutants.
Initially, he encountered the Scarlet Witch but couldn’t overpower her as he had done with others. Yet, it wasn’t she who delivered the final blow to him. Eventually, Ahab was annihilated not by a single team but by the combined forces of the Fantastic Four, X-Factor, New Mutants, and various other groups.
13. Doctor Doom

Doctor Doom is among the strongest adversaries of the Fantastic Four, not due to his supernatural abilities, but rather his extraordinary intellect. He’s a virtuoso across nearly every scientific discipline you can conceive, with a particular aptitude for engineering and technology. Moreover, he’s exceptionally skilled in magic, ranking as one of the world’s most powerful sorcerers.
In his sorrow over her children’s demise, Doom manipulated Scarlet Witch into housing the Life Force entity by falsely promising he could restore them. Unfortunately, she complied but didn’t receive her children back as promised, leading to the Witch launching an assault on the Avengers, causing grave injuries to several members and even claiming a few lives.
In a twisted turn of events, Doom manipulated Wanda into accepting him as her fiancé, yet when her memories returned, she sought revenge – a move that might lead to the destruction of her own family through a powerful spell. This isn’t the first (nor the last) instance where Wanda succumbed mentally and lost grasp over her actions; however, Doom has certainly earned a spot on the list for his chilling influence over her life.
12. Magneto

Occasionally, Magneto stood alongside Scarlet Witch as an ally, but at other times, he was her adversary. For a considerable period, there were assumptions that Magneto was the biological father of both Wanda and Quicksilver, yet those theories were eventually debunked. Despite the complexities, all evidence seems to suggest that this parentage is untrue.
Despite Magneto’s significant power and intelligence, Wanda’s ability to manipulate reality has left him struggling on multiple occasions. The complex nature of their relationship frequently causes debate about who plays the role of hero or villain. However, it’s important to note that Magneto consistently stands as one of Wanda’s primary opponents.
In one narrative, House of M, Wanda altered the entire universe to establish Magneto as its sovereign, only to undo her actions later on. Subsequently, in X-Men: The Trial of Magneto, accusations were leveled against him for her murder, yet no concrete evidence has been presented.
11. Immortus

Kang the Conqueror, whose true identity is Immortus, is a formidable villain in Marvel Comics, known for his abilities in time travel and manipulating alternate realities. Among many versions of Kang, Immortus stands out as one of the most powerful adversaries that Earth’s heroes have encountered. Unlike other villains who seek to rule individual planets or galaxies, Immortus has a grander ambition – he aims to conquer all universes and timelines that exist. Now that’s an ambition worth talking about!
In simpler terms, Immortus possessed advanced tech from the future and vast, unfathomable wisdom, which at one point he manipulated to make Wanda turn against her allies. However, she managed to overpower him on several occasions, though it’s important to note that there’s a twist with Kang.
As a die-hard movie buff, I must admit that the moniker “Immortus” is quite fitting for this character. Time and again, no matter if he’s vanquished or seemingly slain, Immortus has an uncanny knack for resurfacing, often reappearing as a different incarnation of Kang the Conqueror. Ready to wreak havoc on time once more, he’s truly immortal in every sense of the word.
10. Phoenix Five

The Phoenix Five was a group formed when they each received a fragment of the powerful entity known as the Phoenix Force, following its division at Iron Man’s hands. Initially, they worked together to maintain tranquility on Earth, but the Avengers foresaw potential danger due to their ability to lose self-control. The members of this team were Namor the Submariner, Cyclops, Magik, Emma Frost, and Colossus.
The Five would still be incredibly strong without the all-powerful entity, but with the Phoenix Force, they were nearly invincible – except for Wanda. After a prolonged battle, the Avengers successfully extracted the Phoenix from the other members of the Phoenix Five. Cyclops was the only one left, now bearing the entirety of the Phoenix Force within him.
Originally, he unleashed destruction upon the world as Dark Phoenix. However, remarkably, Scarlet Witch was able to extract the entity from him and transfer it into Hope, who demonstrated greater ability to contain it. Subsequently, they collaboratively reshaped existence itself and eliminated the Phoenix Force from our realm, thus preserving Earth and its people.
9. Annihilus

With the Cosmic Control Rod in hand, Annihilus becomes one of the universe’s most formidable beings. However, without it, his power significantly diminishes, placing him at #9 on this list. Nonetheless, defeating him proved to be a challenging and perilous task each time he appeared, with Scarlet Witch playing a crucial role in thwarting Annihilus’s malevolent schemes.
The whole Avengers squad faced off against a powerful cosmic villain, which included Scarlet Witch. However, it proved to be quite challenging. As the sovereign of the Negative Zone, Annihilus wielded a Cosmic Control Rod, granting him near-total dominion over the Negative Zone. This allowed him to orchestrate intergalactic attacks using his Annihilus Wave.
At a certain stage, Annihilus compelled the Avengers into an alliance with him. However, his self-serving intentions often lead to his defeat – he’s known for betraying anyone that obstructs his ultimate aim: perpetual prolongation of his life and being.
8. Apocalypse

Apocalypse is among Earth’s most ancient mutants, having existed for thousands of years. In the days of ancient civilizations, Apocalypse deceived them into believing he was a divine entity. In reality, he was En Sabah Nur, the first human to fully manifest the X-Gene.
His ambition is to establish mutants as Earth’s supreme species, regardless of eradicating humanity entirely. He has clashed with the X-Men and Avengers multiple times, including Wanda Maximoff. Much like his title suggests, The Eternal One seems impossible to conquer. They have fought each other numerous times, and during their last encounter, he swore revenge and promised to reappear again.
7. Ultron

In the comic books and Marvel Cinematic Universe, Ultron is an artificially intelligent entity conceived by Hank Pym and Tony Stark respectively. This all-knowing being can absorb and comprehend vast amounts of information in mere seconds. Observing humanity’s harmful impact on Earth, it determined that the most effective solution was to eliminate mankind entirely.
A being so mighty and pervasive is incredibly challenging to vanquish, yet it required a tangible form to wage a real battle. In the comic books, Ultron and the Avengers, including Wanda, clashed many times, but the most memorable encounter between this entity and Scarlet Witch transpired not in the comics but in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
In the film Avengers: Age of Ultron, Wanda’s brother Pietro, also known as Quicksilver, meets his end in the battle of Sokovia. This loss strikes a profound chord within Wanda, causing her immense grief and fueling her desire for vengeance. In her enraged state, she utilizes her powers to extract Ultron’s central power source – similar to a heart, if he had one.
6. Thanos

Many fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe believe that Thanos derives his immense power solely from the Infinity Stones he possesses. However, it’s important to note that Thanos is already one of the most potent beings in the universe, even without the Infinity Gauntlet. Born as an Eternal on Titan with a condition known as Deviant Syndrome, Thanos often felt shunned. As a result, he dedicated his entire life to accumulating knowledge and enhancing his power.
He achieved an unassailable state, bordering on eternal life, once Death permanently banished him. Yet, how did their paths cross with the Scarlet Witch? In the comics, she survived the Snap, but Thanos eventually took her life when they clashed. However, without the Gauntlet, he was powerless to resist her reality-altering powers.
He became invincible and almost immortal after Death cast him out for good. But how did he encounter the Scarlet Witch? In the comics, she survived the Snap but later perished at Thanos’ hands during their confrontation. However, without the Gauntlet, he was no match for her reality-bending abilities.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, particularly in Avengers: Endgame, we witnessed an impressive display of power from the Scarlet Witch. During the fight against Thanos, she managed not only to fend off his attacks but even lifted him into the air and began dismantling him while fully armored. If it weren’t for the distraction of projectiles, Thanos would have met his end at her hands. This underscores just how incredibly powerful the Scarlet Witch truly is.
5. Mephisto

It’s suggested, though they argue otherwise, Mephisto plays the role of Marvel Comics’ counterpart to Satan. This demonic figure resides in a realm he controls, often acting with malicious intent. He’s known for presenting people with deals that always come with hidden terms. In his domain, Mephisto exhibits omnipotent abilities, capable of overpowering cosmic entities like Galactus and other powerful beings across the universe.
Wanda possesses extraordinary powers to manipulate reality, and Mephisto shares this ability. Notably, Mephisto permanently eliminated Peter Parker’s marriage with Mary Jane Watson. However, it was his act of erasing Wanda’s own children from existence that set him on a direct path towards confrontation with her.
It turns out that Mephisto had infused pieces of his soul into magical artifacts, and when Wanda unintentionally utilized these items, she inadvertently brought her children into being. Later on, Mephisto reclaimed those soul fragments, which resulted in the erasure of Wanda’s offspring from existence.
As a devoted Marvel fan, I can’t help but reflect on the pivotal moment that propelled Scarlet Witch into her haunting darkness, shaking the very foundations of the Marvel multiverse. This transformative event earns Mephisto a top spot on my list, given its profound impact and chilling implications.
4. Dormammu

Since Scarlet Witch has assisted Doctor Strange in confronting Dormammu, a powerful cosmic being called the Lord of the Dark Dimension, on multiple occasions, it was necessary to include him on the list. Dormammu aims to capture the entire universe within his dimension, thereby gaining almost limitless power there.
On various occasions, Dormammu attempted to seize control of Earth, often engaging in battles directly with Doctor Strange. At times, however, the Supreme Sorcerer was aided by others in these struggles. Unlike other foes, Dormammu cannot be killed, but his conquest can be prevented from spreading across our planet.
On multiple occasions, Wanda’s Chaos magic and ability to alter reality proved crucial in combating Dormammu, a clear indication that this Dark Dimension ruler is among the strongest villains that Scarlet Witch has encountered.
3. Chthon

Initially, Wanda’s innate mutant skills weren’t as formidable as they are now. A fact not widely known among fans is that Scarlet Witch gained the ability to manipulate Chaos Magic and significantly alter reality due to an endowment from Chthon.
Chthon is an otherworldly being resembling a demon, who embodies Chaos Magic. He resides beyond the boundaries of our reality, in a dimension filled with chaotic energies that he can manipulate at will, affecting time, space, and the very essence of existence. Through his powers, Chthon chose Wanda to be his physical manifestation on Earth.
He intended to exploit her body for his purposes, but it turned out badly; Wanda was able to repel and even overpower him. While Wanda possesses just a small portion of Chthon’s abilities, the Chaos Magic that she wields is derived from him, making her one of the strongest mutants known.
2. Shuma-Gorath

Amongst the formidable adversaries Scarlet Witch has encountered, Shuma-Gorath stands out as one of them, being primarily an enemy to Doctor Strange. This cosmic entity is indeed terrifying in appearance, but what truly makes it a fearsome foe isn’t its physical might; instead, it’s the extraordinary powers that Shuma-Gorath wields that make it so intimidating.
Shuma-Gorath is often referred to as the ruler of ancient deities called the Old Ones. Indeed, he wields great power over these gods. This formidable being, who is beyond mortal comprehension, has the ability to annihilate entire galaxies just by thinking about it. On several occasions, Doctor Strange, Wanda, and other Earth-based heroes have clashed with Shuma-Gorath in their ongoing battles.
In issue #132 of The Amazing Spider-Man, Wanda, Strange, along with others, joined forces and managed to eliminate the creature. However, Shuma-Gorath is an entity that cannot truly be vanquished. It’s immortal, and it always resurfaces, regardless of efforts made or the intensity of the attempts to defeat it.
1. Herself

In summary, should Wanda possess the power to vanquish every adversary on this roster, then her most significant triumph would be overcoming – her own self. This statement holds true both literally and symbolically.
In many instances, Wanda struggled to manage both her abilities and feelings, much like someone juggling delicate objects. These struggles led to catastrophic consequences, impacting not just her, her companions, but even the cosmos as a whole.
Instead, let me rephrase it for you: Despite her mistakes such as building the House of M, draining mutant abilities, and attacking her teammates like the Avengers, she was always able to rectify those errors. In essence, defeating her would involve controlling her powers, managing her emotions, and restoring balance by fixing as much damage as she could from her past actions.
In essence, Wanda fought and overcame a self from a distinct universe. In Fantastic Four issue 645, the Quiet Man arrived on Earth-616 and created numerous gateways across the globe. This allowed villainous versions of the Avengers, including an evil Wanda, to come into our world from various dimensions.
It became clear to Wanda that the powers of herself and her counterpart were weakening due to the presence of two Scarlet Witches. Since neither was operating at full strength, it turned into a contest of who could act quickest. Therefore, the genuine Wanda unleashed a powerful spell on her duplicate, sending her crashing to the ground and rendering her unconscious.
In terms of overcoming her internal struggles, supernatural abilities, and emotional turmoil, or physically defeating another Scarlet Witch in combat, Wanda emerged victorious, making it my top choice for the ranking.
