Many anime feature powerful moments where characters make ultimate sacrifices for others, dramatically altering their worlds and long-standing conflicts. These scenes often conclude storylines that have been developing for years, exposing hidden intentions, secret schemes, or final plays that determine who lives and what happens next. Whether it’s during ninja battles or galactic uprisings, these sacrifices have real and significant consequences for everyone involved. Below are fifteen key instances that profoundly impacted their respective series.
Jiraiya in ‘Naruto: Shippuden’ (2007–2017)

Jiraiya goes undercover in Amegakure to learn about Pain, gathering important information about the Rinnegan and the Six Paths technique before his final battle. The arc, created by Studio Pierrot, shows how he secretly writes a message on Fukasaku’s back, which later helps reveal Pain’s secrets. Even after losing an arm, Jiraiya continues to fight, buying enough time to send this crucial information. This data is exactly what allows Konoha to develop a plan to defeat Pain and save the village.
Portgas D. Ace in ‘One Piece’ (1999– )

At Marineford, Ace sacrifices himself to protect Luffy from Admiral Akainu, taking a deadly hit right after being released from his execution. As he dies, his vivre card crumbles, and he passes on his hopes to Luffy, who then faints and needs to be rescued. Ace’s death brings the war to an end, but also marks a turning point following Whitebeard’s last words. This event ultimately leads Luffy to train with Rayleigh, dramatically changing the course of his journey and his crew’s future.
Vegeta in ‘Dragon Ball Z’ (1989–1996)

In a desperate attempt to defeat Majin Buu, Vegeta sacrifices himself by detonating his body, hoping to shatter Buu into pieces. Before doing so, the animation shows him briefly knocking out Goku, a nod to their history. While Buu recovers, Vegeta’s sacrifice allows valuable time for people to escape and for a plan to be formed. This act is significant because it’s the first time Vegeta puts the safety of others ahead of winning.
Lelouch vi Britannia in ‘Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion’ (2006–2008)

I still marvel at Lelouch’s incredible plan. He deliberately took on all the world’s hatred, orchestrating his own assassination as Zero. It was breathtaking to watch him become emperor, strategically taking down opposing forces and preparing for that final, tragic parade. His death wasn’t just an end, but a transformation – passing the mantle of Zero to Suzaku, making him a symbol of hope for the future. It was all so carefully calculated, not just to end the fighting, but to finally create the peaceful world Nunnally always dreamed of. It was a sacrifice, yes, but one that truly worked.
Erwin Smith in ‘Attack on Titan’ (2013–2023)

Erwin bravely leads a risky attack to distract the Beast Titan, creating an opening for Levi to strike. The animation studios Wit Studio and MAPPA depict Erwin sacrificing his personal goal of uncovering the basement’s secrets to give his soldiers a fighting chance. This diversion allows Levi to get close to Zeke and almost defeat him. Erwin’s sacrifice ultimately leads to the difficult decision of who will inherit the Titan powers.
Neji Hyuga in ‘Naruto: Shippuden’ (2007–2017)

During the battle, Neji bravely jumps in front of a powerful attack meant for Naruto and Hinata, sacrificing himself to protect them. He intentionally lowers his defenses, showing his commitment to their safety. His dying words tell Naruto that he’s someone who can overcome a predetermined destiny – a fate Neji himself was once trapped by. This selfless act strengthens the bond between the Allied Shinobi Forces and fuels Naruto’s determination to win the war.
Kyojuro Rengoku in ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba’ (2019– )

After the battle on the Mugen Train, Rengoku bravely fights to hold off Akaza, a powerful demon, protecting the injured passengers throughout the night. The animation studio, Ufotable, skillfully depicts the fight, ensuring Akaza can’t reach the recovering Tanjiro and Inosuke. Though fatally wounded, Rengoku stands firm until sunrise, forcing Akaza to flee. His final moments impart valuable lessons about training and finding one’s purpose to the younger demon slayers.
Kaworu Nagisa in ‘Neon Genesis Evangelion’ (1995–1996)

Kaworu pilots Unit 02 to the heart of NERV, but intentionally sacrifices himself instead of initiating Third Impact. The creators depict his last wish as permission for Shinji to destroy him, and this act saves humanity by preventing a catastrophic reset of reality. This event also reveals the full story of Adam and Lilith to NERV, giving them crucial understanding.
Haku in ‘Naruto’ (2002–2007)

During the fight on the bridge in the Land of Waves, Haku bravely jumps in front of Kakashi’s powerful Raikiri attack to protect Zabuza. As he does so, his ice mirror technique breaks apart, and he gives his life to block the blow. This sacrifice causes Zabuza to rebel against Gato and his men, bringing his story to an end. It’s also the first time Naruto truly understands the sacrifices shinobi sometimes have to make.
Kittan Bachika in ‘Gurren Lagann’ (2007)

Kittan bravely sacrifices himself by crashing his spaceship, the Space King Kittan, into the enemy’s Death Spiral Machine and firing at close range. This causes a massive power surge and unexpectedly evolves him into a being of pure spiral energy, clearing a path for Team Dai Gurren. The resulting explosion temporarily disables the enemy’s defenses, allowing their flagship to continue its journey toward the Anti-Spiral. Kittan’s risky move turns what seemed like certain defeat into a chance to attack.
Armin Arlert in ‘Attack on Titan’ (2013–2023)

Armin tricks the Colossal Titan into using its steam release for a long time, ultimately burning it alive on the wall to create an opportunity for Eren. The animation studios Wit Studio and MAPPA dramatically show the tense moments as Armin holds on to Bertholdt until Eren can attack. Being almost killed leads to a critical decision about a special serum, which alters the military’s leadership and future strategies. As a result, Armin becomes a Titan himself and later uses the Colossal Titan’s abilities.
Itachi Uchiha in ‘Naruto: Shippuden’ (2007–2017)

Itachi deliberately acted like a villain to prevent further conflict following the Uchiha clan’s downfall, ultimately sacrificing himself to protect his brother, Sasuke, from being hunted and blamed. The anime studio, Pierrot, showed that Itachi faked an illness and meticulously planned everything, even using special abilities like Amaterasu as a failsafe against future dangers. Sasuke eventually learns the truth about his brother through conversations with Tobi and during the Edo Tensei revival, completely changing his understanding of what happened to their clan. Itachi’s elaborate scheme successfully maintained peace and stability in Konoha for many years.
Alphonse Elric in ‘Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood’ (2009–2010)

During the climactic battle, Alphonse gives up his physical body to restore Edward’s lost arm, enabling him to continue fighting. The story describes how Al’s armored form breaks down as the transformation happens. This sacrifice allows Ed to defeat Father and then trade his ability to use alchemy to bring Alphonse back to normal. Through these selfless acts, the brothers finally correct the error that started their journey, achieving their goal without relying on a Philosopher’s Stone.
Madoka Kaname in ‘Puella Magi Madoka Magica’ (2011)

Madoka wants to stop witches from ever appearing, even if it means she herself will be erased from history. The animation shows her making a deal that changes the fundamental rules for magical girls throughout time. She transforms into a being who saves people just when they’re about to lose hope. This new approach breaks the cycle of witches and establishes a new way for magical girls to operate.
Jonathan Joestar in ‘JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure’ (2012– )

As the ship burns, Jonathan struggles to hold Dio captive, even as his own strength gives out. The anime shows him passing on the mask and entrusting a pregnant woman to Erina for safekeeping before the ship explodes. By doing so, he ensures his family line continues and stops Dio from harming anyone else at that time. This decision ultimately creates the foundation for future generations to battle Dio’s evil.
