Exploring the realm of comics, magical abilities have been a staple since the Golden Age era. Some of the most iconic superheroes from this period were sorcerers or magicians. Both DC and Marvel Universe boast an impressive roster of characters with these powers. Not all of them appear to be magical experts at first glance, but they certainly are! Here, we delve into the top 15 superheroes from both universes that harness magical abilities.
1. Doctor Strange (Marvel) – Known for his mastery over the mystic arts and sorcery, he is a key member of Earth’s mightiest heroes, the Avengers.

When examining superheroes who possess magical abilities, we were taken aback by their number. To clarify, the number of superheroes in general is relatively small. The reason for this is that creators found magical superheroes to be overly predictable or clichéd. Instead, they chose to focus on more relatable superheroes who possess realistic powers.
However, we’ve noticed a significant surge in the popularity of these magical superheroes in both DC Extended Universe and Marvel Cinematic Universe. This trend inspired us to compile this list. So, without any further delay, let’s dive right in!
1. Zatanna
Zatanna Zatara, often simply referred to as Zatanna, is primarily known from Hawkman and Hawkgirl comic series. Her debut took place in a Hawkman comic issue back in 1964. She embarked on a mission to locate her father, Zatara, who had connections with Thomas Wayne and his wife Martha, as well as other powerful magicians. Similar to her father, she has maintained relationships with groups such as the Justice League, Justice League Dark, Sentinels of Magic, Young Justice, and others.
she possesses extraordinary magical abilities such as telepathy, teleportation, telekinesis, time manipulation, control over elements, and dimensional travel, making her a true master of magic. Not only is she an exceptional stage magician and escape artist, but she also boasts advanced hand-to-hand combat skills. While her father was renowned for his magical prowess, Zatanna surpasses him in every way. She made an appearance on the live-action TV show Smallville, with Serinda Swan playing her role.
2. Magik

Illyana Rasputin, also known as Magik, hails from the Marvel comics universe. She’s the younger sibling of Colossus and serves alongside him in the X-Men team. In addition to her role with the X-Men, she is associated with the New Mutants, Hellions, Phoenix Five, and other groups. Over the years, Magik has evolved from a secondary character to a mainstay in significant storylines, making her debut in 1975.
Her abilities are nothing short of extraordinary. She can traverse different dimensions, a skill that overlaps with teleportation. She’s also adept at using magic, dons mystical armor, and wields a potent weapon known as the Soulsword.
In the film titled “The New Mutants” produced by Disney, she made her live-action debut, skillfully played by actress Anya Taylor-Joy. Regrettably, the movie underperformed financially and garnered a mix of mediocre to unfavorable critiques. However, it’s worth noting that the comic books associated with it are quite impressive.
3. Spectre

In the expansive DC Universe, one of the oldest superheroes and founding member of the Justice Society of America is the magical entity known as Spectre. Throughout history, there have been five distinct versions of this powerful character, all of which are well-recognized by fans. The original and most famous Spectre in DC Comics is Jim Corrigan, while Crispus Allen also made a significant impact. Interestingly, Hal Jordan, typically a Green Lantern, took on the role of Spectre as penance for his past actions as the malevolent Parallax, who nearly destroyed an entire universe.
During the epic Crisis on Infinite Earths, Oliver Queen (also known as Green Arrow) took on the role of The Spectre for a time in the Arrowverse.
4. Doctor Fate

In different interpretations, Doctor Fate has been portrayed as a character, with Nabu being the original version. Nabu, named after an ancient Mesopotamian deity, devoted his existence to combating his arch-nemesis – the Lord of Chaos. Later on, he became a mentor for other Doctor Fates who succeeded him. The first human to assume the role of Doctor Fate was Kent Nelson, who, alongside his father, stumbled upon Nabu’s sealed tomb and the equipment associated with Doctor Fate.
Following Erik Strauss’s demise, both he and Linda Strauss were selected to inherit the title of Doctor Fate. However, they could only assume this role if they merged into a single entity. Sadly, after Erik’s passing, Linda followed soon after. The new Doctor Fate then became Inza Cramer Nelson, traditionally married to Kent Nelson, another Doctor Fate. Meanwhile, Jared Stevens, an extraordinary demon hunter, stood out from the crowd – his superhero moniker hinted at this individuality; he was known as Fate.
Hector Hall, offspring of Hawkman and Hawkgirl, following his resurrection, assumed the role of Doctor Fate. Next up was Kent V. Nelson, relative of Kent Nelson, who delved deeply into battles with magic and incantations during his comic book stint. Lastly, Khalid Nassour, present Doctor Fate in comics, marked history as the first Muslim character to spearhead a solo series. He was also an apprentice under Kent Nelson, his mentor. The magical prowess and ancient relics make Doctor Fate one of the most formidable superheroes within the DC Comics universe.
5. Loki

Loki, who is both stepbrother to Thor and an adopted son of Odin, has played various roles in Marvel Comics. Initially, he was a nemesis to heroes like Thor, Odin, Lady Sif, Valkyrie, as well as the Avengers and other powerful superhero groups. However, his cunning ways sometimes led him to assist these superheroes, particularly Thor during battles with cosmic villains. Loki possesses formidable powers, including expertise in manipulation and deception, enhanced physical abilities, and Asgardian powers such as astral projection, energy blasts, flight, illusion casting, inter-dimensional travel, shape-shifting, and much more. In the comics, Loki is portrayed as far more ruthless than in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
As a devotee, I’ve witnessed the captivating portrayal of Loki by Tom Hiddleston, who masterfully depicted Loki’s sinister motives yet revealed his benevolent side, particularly during the Thanos saga and the latest Loki series. These instances have offered us a deeper insight into his character than ever before. Known as one of the most potent sorcerers in the Marvel Universe, Loki continues to intrigue us with his complexities.
6. Clea

In the comic books, Clea is depicted as a sorceress who becomes the disciple, love interest, and eventually the wife of Doctor Strange, also known as Stephen Strange. She eventually succeeds him as Sorcerer Supreme. Clea is the niece of Dormammu, one of Doctor Strange’s main villains and a demonic ruler, and she governs the Dimension of Darm. As such, she wields immense magical power, with abilities that include superhuman strength, control over magic, energy blasts, teleportation, telekinesis, mind manipulation, illusion creation, and more.
In the real-life film adaptation of Doctor Strange: In the Multiverse of Madness, Charlize Theron – a talented actress with an Academy Award under her belt – made a special appearance. This brief role has left fans eagerly anticipating what her character might bring to future Marvel Cinematic Universe productions.
7. Shazam

One of the original magical superheroes produced by Fawcett Comics and subsequently DC Comics, Shazam stands out as a distinctive and iconic figure. It’s his suit that grabs immediate attention, but it’s his abilities that truly set him apart. Interestingly, his name, Shazam, is actually a shortened form representing his powers: Solomon’s wisdom, Hercules’ strength, Atlas’ stamina, Zeus’ power, Achilles’ courage, and Mercury’s speed.
- S (Wisdom of Solomon) – vast knowledge, eidetic memory, clairvoyance
- H (Strength of Hercules) – infinite strength
- A (Stamina of Atlas) – infinite stamina, infinite endurance
- Z (Power of Zeus) – electricity generation, regenerative healing, magic
- A (Courage of Achilles) – infinite courage, mental resilience
- M (Speed of Mercury) – infinite speed, superhuman reflexes, flight
Essentially, he’s virtually invincible due to being a highly influential superhero within the DC universe. His immense power attracts formidable adversaries such as Black Adam, Blaze, Satanus, Doctor Sivana, and numerous others who rank among the most powerful villains in the DC universe. Shazam maintains associations with the Justice League, Justice Society of America, and Squadron of Justice. You can catch him in his upcoming second live-action film from DCEU, titled “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.
8. Doctor Druid

One more doctor on this list is Dr. Druid, a mystic who has been hunting supernatural monsters since his debut in Marvel Comics in 1961 and continues to play a significant role today. He’s worked with groups like Monster Hunters, Legion of the Unliving, and Avengers. As a Druid, he seems capable of using magic much like characters from World of Warcraft.
His abilities encompass limited mind-reading, movement of objects without physical contact, control over people’s minds, sensing magic, and manipulating mystical forces. He is well-versed in the study of magic. Interestingly, his character served as a foundation for Doctor Strange during the 1960s comic book creation. As a result, Dr. Anthony Druid was temporarily sidelined for about a decade before reappearing permanently as Doctor Druid in 1976.
9. Scarlet Witch

Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch in Marvel Comics, is a character who was once a human with supernatural abilities and currently ranks among the most renowned figures in the Marvel Universe, whether she’s portrayed as a hero or a villain remains to be seen. Her character is captivating due to her complexities, particularly her role as the world’s most powerful sorceress. Lately, her origin story has undergone several alterations: previously, Wanda and her brother Quicksilver were no longer mutants but rather products of human experimentation by an organization. Additionally, Magneto, who was once believed to be their father, is not their biological parent according to recent developments in 2015.
Wanda is known throughout the universe as the most potent sorceress due to her extraordinary abilities, such as access to chaos magic, manipulation of reality and time, spell-casting, teleportation, and much more. Her recent portrayal in the Doctor Strange film as a menacing antagonist has left us eagerly anticipating future appearances.
10. Doctor Voodoo

In our previous rundown, we highlighted Jericho Drumm; it’s essential to bring up his impressive magic skills in this one as well. He shares a deep connection with Doctor Strange’s lore and offers an intriguing spin on the Voodoo mythos. His exploits have also extended to assisting prominent Marvel heroes such as Moon Knight and Spider-Man. With an extensive repertoire of mystical knowledge, Jericho boasts additional abilities like superhuman strength, spirit possession, fire control, summoning powers, and the capacity to generate and wield mystical energies. Moreover, he holds the title of Sorcerer Supreme, providing him access to ancient magical artifacts.
He is truly a powerful magician, and hopefully, we see him in the MCU soon.
11. Ghost Rider

Ghost Rider, much like Doctor Fate, boasts several characters who embody the role. Among them, Johnny Blaze stands out as the most recognized. Ghost Rider is instantly recognizable due to his distinctive appearance – a flaming skull, leather jacket, chains, and motorcycle that have solidified him as one of Marvel Comics’ most iconic superheroes. His powers are immense, given that he battles actual demons in Hell. His abilities encompass tremendous physical strength, the manipulation of hellfire, advanced weaponry, invulnerability to fire, resurrection, travel between dimensions, immortality, pyrokinesis, and many other extraordinary traits.
He’s associated with major Marvel supergroups like the Avengers, Defenders, and more, with the Avengers being particularly notable. His ability to manipulate demon magic earns him a spot on this list.
12. John Constatine

In a rephrased manner:
DC’s character, John Constantine, known as Hellblazer, shares certain characteristics with our earlier mention, Ghost Rider. Both characters ward off demonic entities from crossing into our reality. As an adept in the arcane arts, Constantine employs magic such as necromancy, illusion casting, fire manipulation, teleportation, and other abilities. His comics are among the finest DC Comics published in recent times, with his character being one of the most captivating superheroes ever created. Who would have thought a magician, clad in a trench coat and sporting a grungy appearance, could be so intriguing?
13. Adam Warlock

Adam Warlock debuted in Marvel Comics back in 1967, and has been a recurring character in major storylines ever since. This artificially created being, with cosmic powers, was brought to life by the organization known as Enclave, who aimed to create the perfect human. However, after gaining sentience, he departed Earth completely. Notably, it was Adam Warlock who thwarted Thanos’ destructive plans in the comics by transforming him into stone.
Adam Warlock is associated with both the Guardians of the Galaxy and Infinity Watch. Known for his mastery over magic, he also possesses additional abilities such as superhuman strength, flight, energy control, absorption, and matter manipulation. In the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 3 film in 2023, Adam Warlock will be brought to life by actor Will Poulter.
14. Raven

Born to a demon and a human woman, Raven is a renowned superheroine from the DC comics universe. Debuting in 1980, she has become an integral character within the comic book narrative. Raven’s alliances span various groups such as the Justice League, Teen Titans, Titans, Sentinels of Magic, and others. With her impressive sorceress abilities, she is undeniably a force to be reckoned with.
Her powers encompass flight, teleportation, empathy, and psionic abilities. She excels in manipulating dark forces and has mastery over molecular manipulation, among many other extraordinary talents.
She possesses significant power and is frequently associated with teams of heroes tasked with guarding our planet. She can be found in various episodes of DC’s Animated Universe, specifically the television series Teen Titans, as well as the live-action show Titans.
15. Doctor Strange

Lastly, but by no means least, let’s talk about another renowned physician – Dr. Stephen Strange, often paired with Scarlet Witch. Currently, he is one of the most sought-after superheroes, gracing many Marvel productions, not just MCU. From animated series to video games, you name it, and Doctor Strange has been there. As the Sorcerer Supreme and an expert in the Multiverse, it’s only fitting that he makes this list. We eagerly anticipate Benedict Cumberbatch reprising his role again.
