15 Mecha Shows Where the Ace Pilot Is a Black Woman

For years, the world of giant robots, or ‘mecha,’ has included many different kinds of pilots. But featuring Black women in these roles has led to some of the most exciting stories in science fiction. These characters are diverse – they can be strategic leaders, royalty, or tough mercenaries struggling to survive. They break away from typical tropes and deliver incredibly memorable action scenes. Whether they’re piloting realistic military robots or powerful, super-powered guardians, these skilled pilots consistently show courage and strong leadership in battle.

‘Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans’ (2015–2017)

I’ve always been incredibly impressed by Amida Arca. She’s truly one of the best pilots I’ve seen come out of this post-disaster era. As the leader of the Turbines’ mobile suit team, she flies a customized Hyakuren with such skill and power – it’s amazing to watch. But she’s so much more than just a fighter. She really takes care of the younger members of both Tekkadan and the Turbines, acting like a mother figure and offering guidance. She’s fiercely protective of her crew and especially her partner, Naze, and she’ll fight to the very end for them. Her style is all about getting up close and personal in a fight, and you can just tell she’s got years and years of experience under her belt.

‘Voltron: Legendary Defender’ (2016–2018)

Princess Allura starts as the leader of the Castle of Lions and later becomes a Paladin. She expertly pilots both the Blue Lion and, at different times, the Red Lion, adapting to changing team needs. Being Altean, she has a special connection to a powerful energy source called Quintessence, which gives her unique abilities when controlling the Lions. Over the course of the series, Allura transforms from a negotiator and strategist into a courageous warrior dedicated to freeing the universe from the Galra Empire, ultimately sacrificing herself to save reality.

‘Eureka Seven’ (2005–2006)

Hilda is the pilot of the Terminus typeR505 and a key leader within the Gekkostate, a rebellious group. She works closely with Matthieu and often leads the group’s strategies when Holland isn’t available. Hilda is known for being practical and fiercely loyal, helping to keep the Gekko crew functioning smoothly. She’s a skilled pilot, demonstrating her abilities in aerial battles against the U.F. Force, using the show’s unique Trapar waves to expertly control her LFO. Throughout Renton and Eureka’s adventures, Hilda consistently provides a sense of stability.

‘Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion’ (2006–2008)

Villetta Nu is a highly skilled Knightmare Frame pilot who quickly becomes a prominent figure in the Britannian military. Known for her drive and talent, she fights against the Black Knights in machines like the Sutherland and Gloucester. Her story is complicated by a period of amnesia and a developing relationship with Kaname Ohgi, the leader of the resistance, which makes her question her allegiance to Britannia. Eventually, Villetta earns the title of Baroness and a key role in the new government, becoming one of the few main characters to make it through the series’ many political upheavals.

‘Mobile Suit Gundam SEED C.E. 73: Stargazer’ (2006)

Selene McGriff works for the Deep Space Survey and Development Organization (DSSD) as both a scientist and a coordinator. She’s the main pilot and engineer of the GSX-401FW Stargazer Gundam, a spacecraft built for exploring space, not fighting. When a unit called Phantom Pain attacks her station, Selene has to use the Stargazer’s powerful “Voiture Lumiere” propulsion system to defend herself. She’s incredibly smart and quick-thinking, using her scientific knowledge to overcome dangerous military attacks. Her story takes place during the Cosmic Era wars and centers around her quest for knowledge even in times of conflict.

‘Gunbuster 2: Diebuster’ (2004–2006)

Tycho Science is a skilled pilot who uses advanced technology to control powerful machines called Buster Machines. She starts with Machine No. 66 and later unlocks the even stronger Quatre-Vingt-Dix. Known for being pragmatic and focused on getting things done, Tycho often argues with the main character, Nono, and others in their group. Her story delves into the emotional scars of being forced to fight as a child and the temporary nature of her abilities. Ultimately, Tycho confronts her insecurities and becomes essential in protecting Earth from alien threats.

‘Mobile Suit Gundam’ (1979–1980)

Lalah Sune is a key character in the Universal Century story and was the first to fully demonstrate the abilities of a Newtype. She was recruited by Char Aznable and pilots the Elmeth, a powerful mobile armor that uses remote-controlled beam weapons called bits. Lalah’s exceptional skills let her fight many enemies at once without even touching them, causing significant damage to the Federation army. She shares a deep psychic connection with Amuro Ray, which dramatically changes his perspective on war and what it means to be human. Her untimely death has a lasting impact, shaping conflicts for years to come.

‘Cross Ange: Rondo of Angels and Dragons’ (2014–2015)

I’ve become completely fascinated with the character of Zola Axberg. She’s the tough-as-nails captain of the First Company at Arzenal, and honestly, seeing her fly a customized Para-mail while leading a squad of these incredible women called “Norma” against interdimensional dragons is just amazing. She’s a real veteran, clearly seen some things, and has this effortless authority, even over the new recruits like Ange, who used to be a princess! What really stands out is her artificial eye and this really… relaxed attitude she has, considering she’s stuck in a penal colony. The way she commands and, ultimately, what happens to her, is what really forces the main character to face just how brutal their world truly is. She’s a pivotal character, honestly.

‘Basquash!’ (2009)

Miyuki Ayukawa is a brilliant mechanic and Dan JD’s longtime friend. She’s the one who keeps Team Basquash’s giant ‘Big Foot’ mechas running, and she even taught Dan how to pilot them. Thanks to her skills, she can upgrade the mechas to be faster and tougher for Basquash competitions. Miyuki is a quiet but essential part of the team’s success as they compete from Earth to the moon, and she’s consistently shown to be one of the most technically talented characters in the series.

‘Mobile Suit Victory Gundam’ (1993–1994)

Marbet Fingerhat is a skilled pilot and important figure in the League Militaire, fighting against the Zanscare Empire. Throughout the war, she flies various mobile suits, including the Victory Gundam Hexa and the Gun-EZ. As a veteran, Marbet takes on a mentoring role for the young pilot Uso Ewin, acting like an older sister to him. Even after being wounded and experiencing personal tragedy, she remains a strong fighter and ultimately contributes to rebuilding Earth after the war.

‘Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury’ (2022–2023)

Okay, so Lilique Kadoka Lipati is this student at Asticassia, and she’s part of Earth House. As a mobile suit pilot, she flies the Beguir-Pente and is seriously important in team battles – she’s Suletta Mercury’s main support. What I really like about her is that she seems all sweet and dreamy, but when things get real, she’s a surprisingly skilled pilot and can definitely hold her own against some tough opponents. She even steps up during attacks on the school, using her suit to protect everyone. It’s cool because she totally breaks the mold of the typical, stoic, aggressive pilot you often see – she’s gentle, but still incredibly capable.

‘Tenchi Muyo! GXP’ (2002)

Neju Na Melmas used to be a pop idol, but now she’s a pilot with the Galaxy Police. She works in the fun and wild world of Tenchi Muyo, flying powerful spaceships and robots. Even though she looks adorable and comes from the entertainment industry, Neju has telekinetic powers that make her a skilled pilot. As a core member of the team, she helps fight space pirates and other dangers. She adds both humor and impressive piloting skills to the show.

‘Nadia: The Secret of Blue Water’ (1990–1991)

Grandis Granva pilots the Gratan—a versatile machine that can function as a tank, boat, and aircraft. Though she has two crew members assisting with engineering and navigation, Grandis is the Gratan’s commander and main pilot in battle. Initially an enemy pursuing the Blue Water gem, she later teams up with the heroes to defend the world against the Neo-Atlanteans. The Gratan, also called the Catherine, is incredibly important to Grandis, and she fights with it boldly. Over time, she changes from a villain into a courageous ally, even willing to risk destroying her cherished machine to protect others.

‘Cannon Busters’ (2019)

S.A.M. is a sophisticated robot designed to be a friend, and the story follows her quest to find her best friend, Kelby. Though she’s a robot, the show looks and feels like a classic mecha series, complete with vehicles that transform – like Bessie, which turns into a bull-shaped car. S.A.M. herself can transform into a powerful, weaponized form known as “Cannon Busters.” This creates a striking contrast between her sweet personality and her potential for incredible destruction. The show embraces and plays with familiar mecha themes through S.A.M.’s design and the mechanical world around her.

‘Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ’ (1986–1987)

Emary Ounce is the acting captain of the La Vie en Rose, a ship that provides vital support to the AEUG and the Argama crew, including delivering new mobile suits like the ZZ Gundam. She sometimes pilots mobile suits herself to defend her ship. A committed officer, Emary develops romantic feelings for Captain Bright Noa, adding a personal dimension to her work. She’s remembered for her courage and selflessness, especially during the final battles of the Neo Zeon War, where she risked her ship to shield her comrades, ultimately making a significant sacrifice for the cause.
