As a longtime Marvel fan who’s followed the MCU since its inception, I can confidently say that these films are not just blockbusters, but they’ve become an integral part of pop culture history. Each of these movies holds a special place in my heart and has shaped my cinematic experiences in unique ways.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) started off with Iron Man in 2008 and has since expanded to be the largest continuous film series ever made, as well as one of the most ambitious cinematic projects yet. Many had hoped for such a development, but few could have predicted it. While not every movie has been exceptional, there’s no arguing about the MCU’s historical impact.
Beyond its historical significance as a groundbreaking work of fiction, being part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been nothing short of awe-inspiring for me. Even though the latest financial reports aren’t quite what we hoped, let’s not forget that the MCU has raked in an astonishing $30,972,214,952 at the global box office – a figure that still leaves me utterly amazed!
Based on that, here’s a rundown of Marvel Cinematic Universe films that have gone beyond the $1 billion mark at the box office. You might find some unexpected entries in this list!

11. Captain Marvel

Prior to the highly anticipated Avengers films of the Infinity Saga, it was “Captain Marvel” that achieved a significant milestone. This Brie Larson-led film took many by surprise as it turned out to be entertaining and introduced an intriguing new character, contributing to its success. Unfortunately, the series didn’t seem to hold up over time.
10. Spider-Man: Far From Home
In a close call, the second Spider-Man film starring Tom Holland edged out Captain Marvel at the box office, though just barely. The movie was well-received, but it failed to match the excitement that Tobey Maguire’s and Andrew Garfield’s standalone Spider-Man films generated. This might be due to their strong connection with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), which could have hindered the ability of Holland’s solo movies to replicate the same level of enthusiasm. However, the overall box office performance was still satisfactory.
9. Deadpool & Wolverine

The first film following “Endgame” that surpassed a significant benchmark and is currently playing in cinemas is on track – as discussed – to reach the number eight spot, though it remains to be seen if it will actually get there. This movie has been riding a wave of nostalgia and, as previously mentioned, wasn’t all that bad. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe will likely need to rethink their future strategies based on this film’s performance.
8. Captain America: Civil War
![](https://fictionhorizon.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/image_2024-08-21_184012416.png)
Initially, the “Captain America” film functioned as a prequel to the last “Avengers” movies, boasting few independent aspects. Despite having an engaging narrative in general, it was the thrilling confrontations that truly captivated audiences, contributing significantly to its popularity.
7. Iron Man 3
![](https://fictionhorizon.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/image_2024-08-21_184113418.png)
The original Iron Man film was an extraordinary movie spectacle. However, the subsequent films didn’t quite measure up. Yet, they retained enough allure to attract audiences, making it inevitable for fans to flock to cinemas to witness Robert Downey Jr.’s last standalone Iron Man adventure. Given the immense popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe at that time, anything was well-received, even a less-than-perfect production like that one.
6. Black Panther

As someone who has grown up watching Marvel movies, I can confidently say that “Black Panther” has become a timeless classic. This film introduced us to the captivating and unique setting of Wakanda, which continues to be one of my favorite locations within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Although the movie itself may not have been groundbreaking in terms of cinematography or storytelling, its importance – both socially and historically – cannot be overstated. It resonated deeply with audiences due to its thoughtful representation and exploration of complex issues, making it a beloved film among fans.
5. Avengers: Age of Ultron
![](https://fictionhorizon.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/11/Ultron-1300x867.png)
The “least successful” Avengers film ranks as the fifth highest-earning Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie ever made, demonstrating just how powerful the Avengers franchise remains. Despite being a rehash of the original with fresh characters, it wasn’t terrible by any means. Over time, some of the criticism it received after its release has subsided. Thankfully, box office figures can attest to this.
4. Marvel’s The Avengers
![](https://fictionhorizon.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/image_2024-08-21_185253635-1300x731.png)
The initial “Avengers” film was an exhilarating experience. It served as a groundbreaking production, living up to its reputation by demonstrating the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s potential as a franchise. It marked the start of something remarkable, and given this, its box office success is hardly unexpected.
3. Spider-Man: No Way Home
![](https://fictionhorizon.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/image_2024-08-21_185339472-1300x710.png)
Among the movies released post-“Endgame,” only two have surpassed a significant benchmark, and one of those is the recently released film. The movie had its merits, but it truly exceeded expectations due to the comeback of Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Their return was thrilling, yet there’s a possibility that this nostalgia surge could pose challenges for Marvel in the future. However, with such impressive earnings, who can complain?
2. Avengers: Infinity War
![](https://fictionhorizon.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/image_2024-08-21_185512279.png)
To begin with, the initial segment of the last act in the Infinity Saga… The film “Infinity War” served as a powerful and heart-wrenching prelude to what transpired in “Endgame”. There were certainly some symbolic moments and areas that could have been deeper, but its success was undeniable, reaching the pinnacle of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in terms of both financial and creative achievement. Therefore, there wasn’t much more needed to enhance it.
1. Avengers: Endgame
![](https://fictionhorizon.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/08/image_2024-08-21_185436697.png)
Absolutely, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has reached its peak with Endgame. After half a decade, many fans believe that the MCU’s storytelling and emotional depth in Endgame is unsurpassable, and they might be correct. The movie encapsulated everything that the MCU represents to this day, and the exceptional execution made Endgame the second highest-grossing film ever made.
