As a die-hard Marvel fan who has grown up with these extraordinary characters, I must say that the journey of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been nothing short of breathtaking! From the epic clash between friends in Captain America: Civil War to the heart-wrenching end of some OG superheroes in Avengers: Endgame, each film has left an indelible mark on me.
In the Marvel Universe, there’s an abundance of superheroes and villains, one captivating villain from the show WandaVision that stood out is Agatha Harkness. She will be further delved into in her upcoming TV mini-series, Agatha All Along. However, to fully grasp the story before Agatha All Along premieres, fans should watch these 11 MCU movies and shows first.
1) Thor
2011’s release of Thor marked its debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s initial phase, introducing audiences to the primary character, the God of Thunder, Thor. Influenced by Norse mythology, the narrative unfolds around Odin’s declaration of war against the Frost Giants, who aim to conquer the nine realms. Despite his father’s command, Thor decides to negotiate peace between the feuding parties. However, his actions are met with disapproval from Odin, leading to Thor being banished to Earth as a form of discipline.
As a lifelong fan of comic books and superhero stories, I must say that “Thor: The Dark World” was a truly captivating film that stood out among its peers. Growing up with these mythical characters, I have always been fascinated by their portrayal on screen, and this movie did not disappoint.
2) Thor: The Dark World
2013’s Thor: The Dark World finds me, as an ardent fan, once again immersed in the epic saga of the God of Thunder. This time, Asgard faces another dire threat from Malekith the Accursed and his dark elven horde. An unusual alignment of the Nine Realms creates a catastrophe, opening gates to other dimensions. In the chaos, my beloved Dr. Jane Foster gets transported to an obscure realm and comes into contact with a deadly artifact known as the Aether.
In order to confront the increasing threats, Thor finds himself compelled to collaborate with his sibling, Loki, who had earlier attempted to end Thor’s life. The ensuing events are portrayed in the film that serves as a prelude to Loki’s ascension.
3) Werewolf by Night
As a lifestyle expert, I must share an intriguing revelation: Amongst the unexpected names gracing our screens is “Werewolf by Night,” a captivating 2022 Marvel TV special that delves into the tales of a clandestine band of monster hunters. Marvel’s universe, it seems, extends far beyond Norse gods, cosmic beings, and witches; they have much more to offer us.
In 2022, the TV special centers around choosing the next monster-hunting great, following Ulysses Bloodstone’s footsteps. However, events take an unexpected turn as the main character, Jack Russell, undergoes a werewolf transformation, creating the foundation for the ensuing movie plot.
4) Avengers: Age of Ultron
2015’s release of Avengers: Age of Ultron saw me reunited with my fellow superheroes, marking the official entrance of Wanda into our ranks, leading to the emergence of her romantic interest, Vision. The movie was filled with intense emotions as my creation, Ultron, wreaked havoc and aimed to annihilate the Earth. However, we managed to thwart his plans with the help of new allies, preventing global destruction. The film’s climax hinted at the expansion of our team, welcoming Wanda and Vision into the Avengers fold.
5) Captain America: Civil War
2016’s Captain America: Civil War kicked off Marvel Cinematic Universe phase three by pitting beloved superheroes against one another. The heroes were split into two factions, with Captain America and Iron Man leading their respective groups. This film acts as a follow-up to both Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Avengers: Age of Ultron. It also showcased the blossoming relationship between Wanda and Vision. Unfortunately, fans were devastated when James Rhodes (War Machine) suffered permanent injuries.
6) Doctor Strange
2016’s Doctor Strange chronicles the journey of Stephen Strange, a character on the rise as both a superhero and savior within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. His mundane existence is abruptly disrupted when he sustains severe hand injuries in a car crash. In search of a cure, the movie’s lead embarks on a trip to Kamar-Taj, where he is initially resistant but eventually welcomed by the Ancient One. Over time, Strange masters magic, heals his hands, and delves deeply into ancient knowledge.
As Kaecilius gets in touch with Dormammu from the Dark Dimension, London Sanctum is swiftly destroyed. This sets off an exhilarating magical fight that uncovers the long-kept mysteries about the Ancient One. Throughout the movie, Strange too learns to master the Eye of Agamotto and the Cloak of Levitation.
7) Avengers: Infinity War
In 2018, Avengers: Infinity War left audiences speechless with its awe-inspiring take on the Marvel universe. The story follows Thanos as he sets out to gather six powerful infinity stones, ultimately causing what’s known as the Blip. The film unites both the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy in an epic showdown filled with breathtaking action sequences for viewers to enjoy.
8) Avengers: Endgame
Following directly after Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame (2019) stands as Marvel Cinematic Universe’s highest-grossing film. In an attempt to undo the devastation of the Blip, Iron Man collaborates with his superhero comrades to construct a time machine and retrieve the Infinity Stones from the past, ultimately aiming to rectify their current predicament.
Nevertheless, what transpired afterwards took everyone by surprise, as Thanos engaged in a colossal battle with our superheroes. Despite managing to undo the blip, the movie marked the departure of original heroes such as Iron Man, Black Widow, and Captain America.
9) Loki
In the year 2021, the series “Loki” reintroduced the trickster deity Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) narrative. The show delves into the financial dealings of an alternate Loki, chronicling his evolution from a villain to a hero. As he teams up with the Time Variance Authority (TVA), Loki helps maintain and stabilize the sacred timeline. Ultimately, Loki’s actions lead to the creation of a multiverse, paving the way for fresh adventures within the MCU.
10) WandaVision
2021’s WandaVision was a hit Marvel Cinematic Universe television show and will be followed by Agatha Harkness’s series. The show delves into the post-Endgame life of Scarlet Witch, who resides harmoniously with her deceased lover Vision and their two children in an alternate world. However, Scarlet Witch learns that she isn’t the only sorceress around as her tranquil existence is threatened by Agatha, who seeks to seize Scarlet Witch’s powers.
Ultimately, I meet my match when Wanda overpowers me, taking away my magical abilities and imprisoning me within the town of Westview, New Jersey. From thereon, Agatha All Along recounts the tale, revealing how Agatha Harkness rises once more, forming a new coven with the assistance of a goth teenager.
11) Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) showcases the confrontation between powerful sorcerers, Doctor Strange and Wanda Maximoff, also known as the Scarlet Witch. In this movie, we witness Wanda’s transformation from a hero to an antagonist, as she grapples with the grief over her lost loved ones.
As a lifestyle expert, I find myself immersed in a captivating tale of witchcraft, specifically The Darkhold. This enchanting book has drawn me in so deeply that I can’t help but be consumed by its magic. However, my obsession has led me to a dangerous crossroads: I yearn to reunite my lost family from another realm. Yet, as the guardian of our universe, Doctor Strange stands between me and the realization of this desire.
In the series WandaVision, the development of Wanda and Agatha’s characters offers a fascinating turn of events. At first, Wanda serves as the main character, but in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, she transforms into an anti-hero. Conversely, Agatha, who was initially portrayed as the adversary in WandaVision, moves to the forefront in the upcoming MCU TV miniseries, Agatha All Along, set for release on September 18, 2024.
