As global tides started to surge, Strange encountered a time-traveling counterpart of Dr. Stephen Strange. This new Strange tasked her with venturing to Halo City, where she discovered that their mutual friend Chimera had been brutally slain by the mutant Exodus.
9. Defender Strange
In essence, Defender Strange represents an alternative form of Doctor Strange, belonging to a band of superheroes known as the Defenders. The creation of the Defenders is traced back to when Doctor Strange persuaded Namor and teamed up with Hulk to battle a horde of demons. As time went on, they managed to accomplish their mission, but Namor and Hulk vowed never to collaborate again due to the group’s unconventional nature – members often pursued their own objectives, making the Defenders more of an informal alliance than a traditional team.
Even though Doctor Strange and his teammates often clashed, he managed to keep the loosely bonded and unconventional Defenders unit functioning. This was achieved as various superheroes joined forces with different Defenders, unlike more structured groups such as the Avengers who followed strict rules and had a fixed headquarters. The Defenders, however, lacked both regulations and a permanent base, making them a flexible alliance that didn’t require deep emotional bonds between its members.
8. Sir Stephen Strange
During his younger days, Stephen Strange fell into the hands of foreign seafarers who transported him to a slave market in Ankhara. Bought by a physician, he spent time with him, acquiring a wealth of knowledge. The doctor proposed his liberty on the condition that Strange would fetch rare herbs from the East. Driven by this offer, Strange embarked on this quest. He scaled towering peaks far beyond the Indes, reaching the brink of death before being saved and transported to a remote monastery.
Upon his return to England, he performed a kind act for Queen Elizabeth I, who subsequently appointed him as her personal physician. In the face of unusual climate disturbances plaguing England and the globe for an extended period, The Old Man Templar entrusted Strange with a potent artifact for safekeeping. Convinced that the impending doom was the end of the world, Strange shared his fears with the Queen, who subsequently connected him with Sir Nicholas Fury.
Upon discovering that Fury’s representative and the Templar artifact had been abducted by Count Doom, along with Sir Reed and his allies, and learning they were all being detained in the same location, Strange successfully persuaded Fury to turn against King James and launch an assault on Latveria. In the midst of searching for a means to save the world, Strange collapsed and was carried to the moon by Uatu, the Watcher.
Uatu shared with Strange the events that transpired and presented him with a vision containing essential knowledge. However, he was forbidden to disclose this information during his lifetime. King James ordered Strange’s detention, and Stephen compelled Clea to vow not to meddle in the situation.
In an unusual turn of events, Strange was executed for treason. Clea retrieved her husband’s decapitated head from the execution stake and conversed with him. She transported his head to America, a place where he was no longer bound by his oath of secrecy, allowing him to guide others through Clea. Once the world was safe, Clea requested that his comrades bury his head alongside his body.
7. Ultimate Doctor Strange
Stephen Strange was an exceptional and intellectually gifted neurosurgeon. After a fatal car accident that occurred while he was intoxicated and driving his pregnant wife home following a gala held in his honor, he lost both his wife and unborn child, and suffered permanent damage to his hands. Overwhelmed, lonely, and desperate, Strange embarked on a global journey seeking magical healing to restore the skilled hand movements that were essential for his career as a surgeon.
For years, Strange drained his wealth while tirelessly searching for a solution. It wasn’t until rumors of a man in Tibet who performed wonders reached him that something finally clicked. Eagerly, Stephen embarked on a journey to find this enigmatic figure, the Ancient One. Under his tutelage, Strange learned the ancient mystic arts that not only healed his injured hands but also mended his troubled mind, ultimately granting him the title of Sorcerer Supreme.
In my own tale, my involvement in the enigmatic world of the occult allowed me to maintain a discreet presence, as the media labeled me a fraud. Much like the ancient masters of mysticism, I was accompanied by a loyal servant, Wong, and a worthy disciple, Clea. As destiny would have it, a deep connection formed between myself and Clea, leading us to wed. In time, she became with child, further enriching our bond.
On the very same day Clea shared the shocking revelation with Stephen, an enigma unfolded regarding Strange’s whereabouts. Various theories swirled about his disappearance, with some speculating he was ensnared in another dimension, while others suggested a tragic accident led to his demise. Regrettably, Clea was never successful in locating him.
6. Ducktor Strange
Originally, Doctor Simon Strange was a vet, but eventually transformed into a Mallard of the Mystic Arts following tutelage under Old Wino. After prolonged periods of “conversing with ghosts” (which in this context means consuming wine and spirits), he found himself without a home. Capoultry, once an associate of Gander, sought to follow Howard’s advice and assisted them in their escape.
To assist in their descent back to Earth, Capoultry led them to a tipsy individual named Ducktor Strange, who resided in an alleyway. Before Strange could act, Gander, MacDrake, and their associates arrived, attempting to apprehend Howard, Bev, Capoultry, and Strange themselves. In response, Bev hurled a trash bin at her aggressors, but they managed to subdue her successively. Strange then invoked a spell that sent them all back down to Earth.
In light of this opportunity, Gander pledged to pen a new book, revealing Howard’s authentic tale and thereby thwarting Gander’s strategies. Despite his lack of knowledge about the originator of his all-seeing eye, he managed to cast a spell to relocate the center of all dimensions, transporting inhabitants from Duckworld to Earth-616. He aided Stu Cicero, though he initially needed reminding that he had employed this power before.
5. Croctor Strange
In the realm of Earth-8311 where creatures rule, this incarnation of Doctor Strange is known as Steamin Strange. At some point, he gains mastery over the Misfit Arts and takes on the name Croctor Strange. He was part of the Unhumanati collective. His appearance resembles a crocodile with a pair of mustaches, while retaining the fundamental powers shared by all versions of Doctor Strange.
4. Strange-Thing
In this world, Doctor Strange stepped in to help Jennifer Kale and liberated Dr. Ted Sallis from Man-Thing’s enchantment. Regrettably, while doing so, Doctor Strange himself succumbed to the curse and assumed the role of protector for the Nexus of All Realities. Unfortunately, when the Goblin Queen found out about the Nexus, she led her tribe there to harness its power, but was stopped by Havok and the Defenders.
In the end, Havok blew up the Nexus to prevent the Queen from getting it, and Doctor Strange managed to depart from there. It’s worth mentioning that this individual was never explicitly referred to by any name other than “Doctor Strange”. This implies that the details of his past are rather mysterious, so we can’t say for certain if he is Stephen Strange from Earth-1298 or a different character who took on the role of the Sorcerer Supreme.
3. Right Hand of Doom
In the climactic battle between Earth-616 and Earth-1610, the multiverse was ultimately destroyed. However, Doom, utilizing the mighty powers of the Beyonder, managed to gather fragments from various realities and created a composite world named Battleworld. This realm, under Doom’s tyrannical rule, had Doctor Strange serving as its sheriff and right-hand man. Strange often acted as Doom’s spokesperson in certain matters.
For a period of eight years, Doom and Strange skillfully altered the recollections of the locals so they could no longer recall life before Battleworld. Stephen established his personal sanctuary, the island of Agamotto, serving as a reminder of his vanished homeland. Five years following the inception of Battleworld, Strange discovered a ship containing the preserved bodies of the remaining survivors from Earth-616.
When another identical ship appeared from where the Earth-1610 survivors exited, Strange shifted his focus towards the ship he had reserved for himself. Upon opening it, he released the survivors, including Mr. Fantastic and Black Panther. After explaining to the newcomers about the events that unfolded during their suspended animation, Strange was summoned to a fight. Doom initially refused to engage in the struggle until he spotted Mr. Fantastic among the combatants.
In an instant, I found myself transported to Utopolis, where I swiftly intervened in the conflict by appealing to the newcomers, urging them to acknowledge my leadership. To shield these invaders from Doom’s destructive intentions, I utilized my magical abilities to whisk them away. Following the disappearance of both the Earth-1610 villains and the heroes of Earth-616, I faced Strange for disregarding my orders. After an altercation ensued, I accused Doom of being fearful of Richards, a claim that ultimately led to his taking Strange’s life.
2. Disciple of Dormammu
In the fictional universe of Earth-791218, depicted in the “What If…?” stories, Doctor Strange eventually outmatches Mordo in magical prowess. When Dormammu deems it appropriate, he instructs Strange to replace Mordo as his underling. Obeying Dormammu’s command, Doctor Strange employs his mystical abilities to end Mordo’s life.
Meanwhile, Strange was resolute on increasing his power to overpower Eternity in battle. He sought more power from both Dormammu and Umar, but Umar dismissed him. To his surprise the following morning, Strange finds himself in possession of the Eye of Agamotto, gifted by his former enemies. He sees this artifact as a tool to eliminate them permanently.
When Strange presents it to Dormammu, there’s initial resistance but eventually, he acknowledges that Strange possesses the ability to eliminate the Ancient One. As Strange readies for an attack, they collectively concoct a scheme where each party aims to annihilate the others. Strange appears to slay the Ancient One and his followers, then creates a gateway to engage with Eternity.
In this scenario, Dormammu’s plan would unfold advantageously, as he intended to incapacitate Strange, harnessing his energy for his own power surge against Eternity. Caught in the crossfire of mystical assaults from both Dormammu and Eternity, Strange teetered on the brink of insanity. Faced with a moral dilemma, he had to make a choice between good and evil to secure his existence. Recognizing his past mistakes, he ultimately opted for the path of righteousness, thus being granted mercy and returned to Earth.
1. Doctor Strangefate
In this alternate reality (Earth-9602), the Doctor Strange we see isn’t truly Stephen Strange, but instead Professor Charles Xavier, a powerful variant of the character. While on a spiritual quest in the Himalayas, the mutant Charles Xavier was saved by Nabu, an ancient being who at that moment was the Overlord of the Order of the Amalgam Universe.
Under the guidance of Nabu, Xavier embarked on a journey unveiling the secrets of the mystical realm. He harnessed the forces of psychic and magical prowess, transforming the cantankerous sorcerer into one of the strongest entities in the Amalgam Universe. As a strong telepathic mutant, Xavier quickly surpassed his mentor, ascending to the role of Supreme Lord within the Order.
Initially part of the original Judgement League Avengers, Dr. Strangefate has since shifted his focus towards secluded duties within the shadow dimensions, allowing others to handle the protection of Earth’s populace. Despite being labeled as a cosmic protector, Dr. Strangefate is an atypical hero. He prefers to work from his stronghold, the Tower of Strangefate, and exerts influence over situations remotely rather than taking direct action. He typically accomplishes his objectives by subtly controlling others’ actions.
