10 Popular Shows Not Returning To TV This Fall: From The Good Doctor To Young Sheldon

As a longtime fan of these shows, I must say that 2023 has been quite the rollercoaster ride for television enthusiasts like myself! From the unexpected finale of “Not Dead Yet” to the abrupt cancellation of “Station 19”, it seems like our favorite shows are getting the axe left and right.


With autumn’s arrival and our return to cozy television viewing, we bid farewell to several beloved series. Shows such as “The Good Doctor” in the medical drama genre and “Young Sheldon” in comedy have made an indelible mark on their audience members.

Instead, these shows appear to have reached an end, whether by cancellations, postponed seasons, or series conclusions. Here’s a list of 10 beloved shows that regrettably won’t be airing new episodes on TV this autumn.

The Good Doctor

A well-liked medical drama, titled “The Good Doctor,” was created by David Shore, and it’s a remake of the 2013 South Korean series with the same name. Over seven seasons, this ABC series has successfully attracted a significant number of viewers.

Instead, David Shore, Liz Friedman, and Eric Gunn, the executive producers, declared it was time for them to move on. In a combined statement, they expressed their immense pride in their work and the message they were fortunate to contribute to. The final episode aired on May 21, 2024.

CSI: Vegas

Starting from 2021, this gripping crime series broadcast on CBS has been cherished by viewers. It represented a comeback of Anthony E. Zuiker’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. Unfortunately, CBS announced in April that they would not be producing any additional seasons for the show.

Despite not initially being intended as such, the third season’s concluding episode aired on May 19th. However, a closing scene involving the main serial killer was omitted. Remarkably, this final episode attracted the second-highest audience in the channel’s history.

All American: Homecoming

Nkechi Okra Carroll developed this sports drama that made its debut on The CW in 2022. It’s a spin-off from All American, and it was given a second season renewal in May 2022, followed by a third season renewal in June 2023.

Nevertheless, it was announced by executive producer Caroll on June 5 that the show wouldn’t continue with additional episodes, making the third season its last. She expressed gratitude to her cast and crew for portraying an authentic HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) experience for the audience. The series finale is set to broadcast on September 30.

Magnum P.I.

The television series Magnum P.I., modeled after an 80s action drama of the same name, featured Jay Hernandez as its lead character – a private investigator and ex-Navy SEAL who tackled cases in Hawaii. Despite being rescued from cancellation by NBC, they opted against producing a sixth season for this show.

In its final run, the series was split into two groups of 10 episodes each, but drew fewer viewers than anticipated. Interestingly, though, the double-episode conclusion attracted the largest audience the show had ever known. The grand finale aired on January 3.

NCIS: Hawai’i

The crime-solving TV drama, originally aired on CBS in 2021, is called “NCIS: Hawaii.” Produced by Christopher Silver, Jan Nash, and Matt Bosack, this series was a spinoff from NCIS. Unfortunately, in April of the same year, CBS chose not to continue the show for a fourth season.

In May, Amy Reisenbach from CBS Entertainment announced that they needed to make challenging decisions and prioritize schedule consistency over other factors. As a result, an unexpected series finale was aired on May 6th, which attracted the second-highest viewership of Season 3.

Not Dead Yet

Originating from the minds of David Windsor and Casey Johnson, this comedy series drew inspiration from Alexandra Potter’s book “Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up.” The show made its debut in 2023 and was granted another season in the very same year.

In May, ABC chose to conclude and end the series following its second season, as it wasn’t drawing a large audience. The show starring Gina Rodriguez saw its lowest viewership during this second season compared to any other of ABC’s scripted programs. Its last episode was broadcast on April 24th.

So Help Me Todd

In September 2022, a legal comedy-drama series titled “Scott Prendergast’s Creation” made its debut. The story revolves around a private investigator with a knack for direction, who finds himself working at his mother’s law firm. The show was renewed for a second season in 2023.

On the 19th of April, CBS brought an end to the series after two seasons had passed. Later, Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, expressed her thoughts about this decision, stating that it was one of their responsibilities to make difficult choices. The final episode aired on May 16.

Station 19

In a departure from the popular series Grey’s Anatomy, this action-packed drama was born under the guidance of creator Stacy McKee. Debuting on ABC in 2018, it ran for seven thrilling seasons until its surprising termination.

In December 2023, it was announced that ABC said farewell to its firefighter drama series. The president of Disney Television Group, Craig Erwic, expressed gratitude towards Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers for creating captivating characters and storylines. The final episode aired on May 30, marking a sad end as it was the least-viewed show.

Walker

In simpler terms, the TV show featuring Jared Padalecki is actually a modern adaptation or revival of the 90’s western crime series called Walker, Texas Ranger. This new version was created by Anna Fricke especially for The CW network.

In May, The CW announced the cancellation of the show after four seasons. Jared Padalecki reacted to this news and expressed gratitude for the family they created both on and off set. The final episode aired on June 26, making it the most-viewed program on the channel that day.

Young Sheldon

If you’re fond of The Big Bang Theory, chances are you’ve enjoyed Young Sheldon too. This sitcom, which takes us through the childhood years of a character we know well, is a spin-off and prequel to The Big Bang Theory. Created by Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro, it’s set in the 1980s and 1990s and tells the story of Sheldon Cooper, a child prodigy, living with his family in East Texas.

Yet, in November 2023, it was revealed by CBS that their top-rated comedy series would conclude after its seventh season. The final episode aired on May 16 and attracted over 9.3 million viewers, positioning it as the third-most-viewed entertainment program across all television networks.
