10 Heartbreaking Elden Ring Secrets Nobody Talks About

Like other games in the Souls series, Elden Ring doesn’t tell its story through traditional cutscenes or lengthy conversations. Instead, you piece it together by reading item descriptions, exploring the world, and completing quests. The game’s world is bleak and challenging, and it rarely offers a truly happy ending for the characters you encounter.

Some of the most emotionally powerful moments in Elden Ring aren’t grand events, but rather quiet encounters with characters you meet briefly or discoveries of overlooked places. Through subtle storytelling and a richly detailed world, Elden Ring creates a sense of sadness that truly resonates when these moments click into place.

10. Radahn’s Horse

The greatest warrior with the softest heart

Bandai Namco

Okay, so Radahn’s boss fight is wild. You see him riding this tiny horse, and at first, you’re just cracking up, right? But then you find out the real reason, and it’s actually kinda sad. His horse, Leonard, is super important to him – he loves this little guy. Radahn actually learned gravity magic just so he could keep riding Leonard even as he got huge and powerful, so he wouldn’t accidentally crush him. It’s a really sweet detail, honestly.

Radahn is one of the most powerful characters in Elden Ring, and his boss fight is notoriously challenging. However, seeing this incredibly strong warrior so lovingly devoted to a tiny, helpless creature is surprisingly heartwarming.

9. Godwyn’s Head

A less than clean death

Bandai Namco

The death of Godwyn the Golden is what truly started the events of Elden Ring. His mother, Marika, was so heartbroken that she destroyed the Elden Ring, forever changing the Lands Between. But because of how Ranni the Witch orchestrated his death, Godwyn didn’t truly die. While his soul was gone, his body remained, becoming a horrifying presence throughout the land.

Although his body lies buried in the Deeproot Depths, players will find his head—part of a disturbing, Lovecraftian-inspired scene—below Stormveil Castle, and it’s an image that’s difficult to shake.

8. Latenna the Albinauric

Another loyal companion

Bandai Namco

I was so excited to find Latenna in the Slumbering Wolf’s Shack after finishing the Lakeside Crystal Cave! She’s an Albinauric, and you can actually add her as a Spirit Ash summon, which is awesome. At first, I was just happy to have a really good archer helping me out, but then I learned about what makes her special… and honestly, it was a bit heartbreaking. It really adds a lot to her character!

Before meeting Latenna, we learn she and her wolf, Lobo, were traveling to the Haligree, a safe haven for people like her. Unfortunately, Sir Gideon attacked them, believing Latenna possessed a key to the Haligree. He killed Lobo and left Latenna severely injured.

Latenna joins you as a Spirit Summon, but because of a disability, she can’t move on her own. This means you need to summon her to specific, often difficult-to-reach locations. What many players discovered is that when near Albinauric Archer Wolves – enemies found throughout the world – Latenna can actually ride one into battle, briefly recalling cherished memories of her companion, Lobo.

7. The Mystery of Nepheli Loux

A golden lineage

Nepheli Loux is a skilled warrior you can meet and summon to help in battles throughout the game. She’s presented as the adopted daughter of Sir Gideon, but she grew up as an orphan with no knowledge of her birth parents. Players have noticed a curious connection between Nepheli and another popular character from Elden Ring, leading to speculation about her true origins.

Godfrey, Queen Marika’s first husband, was originally a warrior named Hoarah Loux and later became the first Elden Lord. Even after being exiled and becoming Tarnished, he remained incredibly powerful – a fact that reminds some players of a particular NPC summon. While it’s never been officially confirmed, many believe Nepheli could be Godfrey’s daughter, making it especially sad that they never had the chance to meet.

6. Aurelia the Jellyfish

Yearning for home

Bandai Namco

Spirit Summons can significantly help you in Elden Ring, each offering special abilities to make tough battles more manageable. One of the earliest summons you’ll get is the Jellyfish, which can absorb a lot of damage due to its high health and also inflict poison. Many players summon the Jellyfish without a second thought, but checking its description reveals its name is Aurelia.

As you help Aurelia, you’ll guide her back to Stargazer’s Ruin, where she’ll finally meet her sister again. You’ll discover Aurelia’s sister had promised to take her stargazing on her fourteenth birthday, but disappeared before they could. Bringing Aurelia before her sister will lead to a touching reunion and a bittersweet conversation, making it one of the most heartwarming moments in Elden Ring.

5. The Singing Bats

A hymn about motherhood

Bandai Namco

Okay, so in Elden Ring, you’ll run into these enemies called the Chanting Winged Dames – a lot of us just call them the Singing Bats. They’re everywhere in the Lands Between, and you’ll definitely know when they’re around because of their eerie singing. It’s in Latin, or something like it, and people actually took the time to translate it. Honestly? It’s really sad what they’re singing about. It’s pretty heartbreaking stuff.

The lyrics of the Singing Bats aren’t just generally sad; they tell a specific story about motherhood and the inability to bear children in the Lands Between. Considering how often motherhood appears as a central theme in Elden Ring – many characters are directly related to Marika – the Singing Bats likely represent women who are themselves unable to have children, making their story particularly poignant.

4. Boc the Seamster

A chance at redemption

Bandai Namco

You’ll meet Boc in Limgrave, a character rejected by his demi-human community. He tells you he tried to go home but was attacked near the Coastal Cave and left wounded. Boc is deeply unhappy with how he looks and wishes he could start over. What many players don’t realize is you can actually help him! If you find a sewing needle inside the Coastal Cave and defeat the Demi-Human Chiefs within, you can give it to Boc and assist him on his journey.

After getting a needle, Boc experiences a renewed sense of purpose, revealing he wants to become the Tarnished’s tailor to honor his mother’s memory. He then settles at Roundtable Hold, where he can upgrade your gear. Essentially, he’s a kind character, and helping him find fulfillment and a place to belong is a rewarding experience in Elden Ring.

3. Morgott, The Omen King

Cursed from birth

Morgott and his twin brother Mohg were imprisoned from birth because they belonged to the Omen race, a group consistently rejected and feared. They spent years locked away beneath Leyndell before finally escaping. What’s particularly tragic about Morgott is that, despite being cast out by the Golden Order through no fault of his own, he remained deeply devoted to it, spending his life protecting the Erdtree, even though he never received its blessing.

Eventually, the player character, known as the Tarnished, has to defeat Morgott to reach the Erdtree. This happens because the Erdtree rejects Morgott’s claim to become Elden Lord. The fight is emotionally complex, especially after discovering the tragic story of Morgott’s upbringing and cursed existence. It’s painful to care for something that doesn’t return those feelings, but it appears Morgott simply never experienced love himself.

2. Lichdragon Fortissax

A dedicated friend

Godwyn the Golden defeated Fortissax, but instead of killing the dragon, he became his friend. This surprising bond led to the creation of the Ancient Dragon Cult. Godwyn even gained lightning powers from Fortissax, and their friendship continued even after Godwyn died.

When Godwyn was killed, a deadly decay began to consume his body. His companion tirelessly fought against this decay, determined to stay with his friend. But the decay, known as the death blight, overwhelmed Fortissax, leaving him in the condition we see when we encounter and fight him near Godwyn’s remains.

The bond between the dragon Fortissax and Prince Godwyn is one of the most surprising—and saddest—friendships in Elden Ring, and it’s easy to overlook. Fortissax went to incredible lengths to save his friend from death, a testament to how much he valued Godwyn.

1. The Shaman Village

Bandai Namco

The Shaman Village, found within the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, is a hidden area that’s difficult to reach. This secrecy was intentional – Queen Marika herself wanted it concealed, only directing worthy Tarnished to its unique, golden landscape. As the birthplace of Marika, the village is accessed using the “O Mother” gesture. Though largely empty and guarded by only two Tree Sentinels, it’s rich with lore and offers a glimpse into Marika’s past, humanizing an otherwise seemingly perfect character.

The story unfolds to show that after Marika became a god, the Hornsent imprisoned and brutally tortured her fellow Shamans, even using them in horrific experiments – the results of which players see as the jars of flesh throughout the game. What makes this even more tragic is that Marika later returned to her abandoned village, attempting to heal the land with a golden spell, but it was too late to save them. In a final, poignant act, she cut off a piece of her braid and offered it to the village elder. We’ll never know her exact prayers or wishes, but it’s clear she never came back.
