Death is inevitably a sorrowful event; it may not always be tragic, but it’s always sad. It appears just as frequently in fiction as it does in reality, and the fictional deaths from our beloved series can affect us just as deeply as real-life losses. Despite the numerous deaths portrayed in Chainsaw Man, even among the main characters, fans have found it difficult to accept the demise of some of their most cherished characters. This article will present a rundown of the 10 saddest deaths in Chainsaw Man as they occurred, encompassing both protagonists and antagonists.
10. Pingtsi
In this scenario, Santa Claus agrees to the terms, and Tolka is taken away and destroyed by the Demon of Darkness. Eager to defend, Kusakabe summons the power of the Stone Demon, but the Demon of Darkness swiftly seizes the Stone Demon and pulverizes it, resulting in the demise of Kusakabe.
Power, Long, Pingtsi, Quanxi, and Tamaoki are all prepared to engage in combat, setting the stage for their dissection. We begin our account with the demise of Pingtsi, not due to melancholy but because she was a cherished figure. Her death, despite its grisly nature, is an essential part of this narrative.
9. Galgali

During their patrolling duty, the Violence Ogre exterminated an unknown demonic entity they came across. When Kobeni asked for clarification on reporting the incident, the Violence Ogre jokingly referred to himself as a “Grape Deity.” Later, after taking a break, the Violence Ogre treated Kobeni with an ice cream as a token of goodwill.
Kobeni narrates to the Fiend a tale of her childhood encounter with ice cream, emphasizing that although bound with the Violence Devi, she is not inherently aggressive. She concurs with this sentiment and further discloses that a substantial part of her human brain remains intact. She recalls only that Makima rescued her in some instance. Suddenly, what seems to be Kurose enters a damaged car and announces the death of his partner and mentor in an attack. In response, they hastily depart at his instruction to relay the situation to headquarters.
In simpler terms, Kishibe instructed Galgali and Kobeni to chase the dolls during the fight. After they’ve all been pulled into Hell, Galgali asks Kobeni to remove his mask so he can showcase his full demonic power. He then confronts the Darkness Devil, but unfortunately, he loses in the battle.
8. Beam

In a cheerful manner, Beam lends a hand to Makima and Prinz as they organize numerous dolls that Santa Claus oversees. When Makima makes a request for assistance, Beam gladly complies and promises to continue tidying up the clutter. Later, he appears at the department store where the battle takes place and employs his large shark head to strike Denji from behind, thus liberating her from Long’s grip.
He advises her not to get near “Mr. Chainsaw” until he and Denji leave. Beam cautions Denji against using his chainsaws, but as they run, he stumbles upon a lifeless doll. As she’s reprimanded for her carelessness, Denji yelps when he accidentally steps on a nail. This action triggers the Curse Devil, causing him to rise and start bleeding profusely.
At that instant, Tolka, who had been concealed nearby, emerges and strikes Beam’s face with a kick as he stands there in shock. When Tolka’s mentor turns him into a perfect doll and summons the Hell Devil, Beam is knocked unconscious by Tolka’s assault and is transported to Hell, along with everyone else from the department store. Upon regaining consciousness, Beam encounters the Darkness Devil, causing all present to tremble in fear as he advances towards the other devils. When the Darkness Devil and the rest arrive, Beam’s arms are severed.
Just as the Darkness Devil was about to obliterate him with a beam, ending his life instantly, Denji triggered the switch on his chainsaw for resurrection and made a wish of his.
7. Angel Devil

Regarding Angel Devil’s current status, it appears he is deceased based on what we’ve seen so far. During the Control Devil arc, Makima guided Denji down a hallway, and among Chainsaw Man’s followers, you could see Angel’s body. In the end, he was one of several beings and individuals that Makima controlled and utilized in her battle strategies. Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, it is heavily implied that he perished.
6. Denji’s father

Not much is clear about who Denji’s father really was, and there was an early assumption that he took his own life, making Denji an orphan in debt to the Yakuza. His father appears to have played a significant role in Denji’s unfortunate circumstances, as he was a violent, abusive, and alcoholic man. However, it now seems that the story might not have unfolded as initially believed.
As a devoted cinephile, I’d put it like this: In the Control Devil arc, when Denji uncovers Makima’s hidden intentions, she admits that his father’s death was not a suicide but rather a consequence of Denji acting in self-defense. The Yakuza orchestrated this apparent suicide as a trick to make Denji responsible for his debts. This truth had been hidden behind a psychological barrier within Denji, and as the memory resurfaces, he recalls events related to that fateful encounter.
5. Makima
Towards the end of Manga Part 1, Makima and Denji engage in their final confrontation. It appears that Makima has fatally wounded Denji and attempts to collect Pochita. However, upon seeing Makima, Denji lunges towards her, brandishing a chainsaw.
In simpler terms, Denji tells Makima he’s retrieving Pochita, expresses relief that she appears less guarded, admits the move was daring, and mentions he’s exhausted his blood-granted power from their deal. As he bends to get Pochita, Denji notes Makima had been battling Pochita all along and recalls vaguely how Pochima managed to rise when Makima (now bleeding from her mouth and nose) asks about Denji’s survival.
Denji informs Makima that the chainsaw he employed to wound her was infused with Power’s blood, allowing it to wreak havoc within her while she was still bleeding. Initially doubtful about the effectiveness of such a primitive weapon, Makima questions its potency by saying “It’s barely enough to…”. Denji expresses his delight as Kishibe arrives to rescue them, which is evident when a van pulls up behind him. Before attacking Makima, Denji offers an apology and unleashes the chainsaw upon her. In due course, Denji consumes Makima in order to prevent her from being revived.
4. Himeno

In the initial stages of the Katana Man storyline, Himeno and the group are having a conversation in a restaurant when an individual approaches them. This person discusses people’s preferences, casually mentioning that Denji’s previous employer was his grandfather. Suddenly, he attacks Denji, Aki, and Himeno with gunfire. Power momentarily incapacitates him, but Aki’s Fox Devil consumes him. However, the man manages to escape from within the creature’s head, unveiling his true persona – Katana Man. Aki then commands Power to halt Himeno’s excessive bleeding and focuses on protecting his companions, while preparing for a potential confrontation with Katana Man.
In this scene, it appears that Aki overpowers the Katana Man. Simultaneously, Power expresses concern about Himeno’s dire condition due to her grave wounds. As the Katana Man resurfaces, Aki engages in combat with him. Upon Himeno’s request, both Power and her Ghost Devil refuse to aid Aki, citing the Katana Man as being excessively swift and terrifying. With blood trickling from her mouth, Himeno makes a desperate plea to the Ghost Devil for its complete powers, which it accepts with a grin.
Later on, the complete form of the Spectral Fiend confronts Swordswoman, initially gaining the upper hand. However, their victory is short-lived as another character, Serpentine Fiend, enters the fray. In a surprising twist, the Serpentine Fiend consumes the entire Spectral Fiend, along with Himeno. As a result, only her clothing remains. Before succumbing to death, Himeno managed to tug on Denji’s cord using the Ghost Devil’s hand, thereby reviving him.
3. Aki Hayakawa’s family

In this setting, we find a child lying ill in bed, while his parents read a tale about a town mouse and a country mouse to him. A slightly older boy comes by, proposing they play together, but the youngster is too unwell. The parents suggest he go play a game of catch by himself instead. Disappointed, the older boy comments that the younger one rarely has the chance to play due to his illness. However, our young protagonist expresses his desire to play and heads out with his brother instead.
In the frosty outdoors, an elder child ventures a few paces beyond a younger one, attempting to shoo him away, but the youngster is determined to join the fun. Despite this, he continues to insist on playing. At a certain moment, the younger child hurls a snowball at the older, and they engage in a short-lived snowball battle. The elder child realizes that the younger one is cold due to lack of gloves, so he sends him indoors to get warm clothing before returning. While the boy goes inside, the older one remains stationed by the front door and porch.
At that instant, a strong wind gust is noticed, and the entire house vanishes. The narrative then returns to the present as both readers and viewers realize they’ve caught a glimpse of Aki’s past. Aki was an older boy who witnessed his family’s demise during a horrific assault by the Gun Devil, one of the most formidable and dangerous Devils. They weren’t targeted specifically. Instead, they were innocent casualties of another devastating attack that left Aki alone in the world.
2. Power

Towards the end of Part One’s climax, within his apartment, Makima confides in Denji that she had invited Power and asked him to open the door, intending for Makima to slay her. As Denji opens the door, he encounters Power standing outside holding a birthday cake for him; moments later, Makima mercilessly annihilates Power by merely gesturing with her finger and disintegrating her torso, leaving only her legs and head behind.
Following Makima’s assault on Denji, Pochita unexpectedly summoned Power, urging her to intervene and rescue Denji. Perplexed, Power was certain she had perished at the hands of Makima previously, but Pochita clarified that her consciousness had merely been transferred into Denji due to his earlier consumption of her blood.
A short while passes, and Power, now transformed into the Blood Devil, exits Denji’s body, dramatically altered from her previous form; due to the chaos she caused, Power seized the opportunity to slaughter Makima and her followers using weapons imbued with blood. However, Makima managed to regain control with her zombie forces and fired a shot into Power’s right arm, astonished at her continued survival and inquiring about the reason behind it.
However, Power refused to respond and reached for Denji, attempting to flee; this was abruptly halted when Makima shot Denji in the back, recognizing that escape was impossible. In the end, it was Power’s intervention that allowed Denji to overcome Makima. Following their victory, Denji managed to converse with Power, who asked him to search for her upon her resurrection, find her, and help her recall their shared experiences so they could rekindle their friendship.
1. Aki Hayakawa

On September 12, 1997, an incident involving the Gun Devil transpired in Nikaho, a town within Akita Prefecture, Japan. This monster, known as the Gun Devil, starts firing bullets the moment it appears. As it torched villages and slaughtered their inhabitants, the Gun Devil encountered Makima. From a distance of 500 kilometers, Makima could see this event unfold. The Gun Devil paused before turning to aim at Makima and unleash its gunfire.
Moments before being fatally wounded, Makima displayed her mighty powers. Despite Aki’s selfless act of abandoning his vengeance in an attempt to rescue Makima, both she and Aki fell to the Gun Devil’s relentless attack. With her latest conquest marking her 29th kill, Makima had harnessed the powers of both the Angel and Spider Devils, as well as the alliances she held with Yutaro Kurose, Akane Sawatari, Michiko Tendo, and Aki Hayakawa, to confront this formidable foe.
Despite her best efforts, Makima was unable to eliminate the Gun Devil. In fact, Aki Hayakawa’s body had been taken over by remnants of the Gun Devil, leading to Aki transforming into the Gun Fiend – a tragic and ironic twist in the series. Later, the Gun Fiend, now an adversary, approached Aki’s home and knocked on the door. Makima instructed Denji, who was unaware of the situation, to open it. However, as soon as he did, the Gun Fiend immediately targeted Denji, shooting him in the stomach.
A large portion of Aki’s apartment gets damaged, and both Denji and Power are hurled upwards due to the assault. The Gun Fiend proceeds to fight Denji, resulting in the obliteration of the surrounding area and wounding numerous onlookers. During this chaos, Aki recalls a snowball fight he had with his younger brother prior to the Gun Devil slaughtering his family; however, in this vision, it’s Denji instead of his younger brother that he is playing with.
Following a draw of blood and earnest appeals for aid from the community, Denji ultimately vanquishes the Gun Fiend. This transpired due to Aki experiencing another vision of Denji weeping, leading him to forgo combat against him. Given his fond recollections of his younger brother and viewing Denji as a friend, he chose to stand down.
