In the debut of “Eternals,” the Marvel Cinematic Universe ventures far into cosmic realms and delves into time periods predating the Big Bang. Cosmic beings like Celestials and Deviants, along with the film’s characters, the Eternals, are set to have significant roles in forthcoming MCU narratives.
This isn’t every single Eternal character, as such a list would be excessively lengthy (considering the numerous Eternals in the comics), but rather these 10 Eternals are the ones confirmed for the upcoming movie.
We’ll arrange them in alphabetical sequence, then provide a summary of their powers and skills for you.
Ajak
Played by: Salma Hayek
Just like all the Eternals, Ajak holds an exceptional ability: he can control particles of gravity, or gravitons, which essentially lets him levitate. This power enables him to fly at astonishing speeds over 1,000 kilometers per hour. Furthermore, he possesses the capacity to influence molecules in large masses up to 500 kilograms, although doing so requires approximately an hour for recovery.
As a member of the Eternals, Ajak is immune to exhaustion. He can quickly recover from any non-lethal injury and can only be permanently defeated if a significant number of his cells are destroyed. His cosmic power grants him the ability to release energy bursts, either through his eyes or fists, as well as teleport.
Based on whether he employs his strength, he can hoist anywhere from 800 kilograms to 25 metric tons. Uniquely among the Eternals, Ajak is capable of conversing directly with the Celestials. He has undergone training in wrestling. His expertise extends to archaeology as well. Ajak is outfitted with a helmet and armor crafted from an unidentified alloy, forged in the city of Polaria.
Druig

Played by: Barry Keoghan
Druig, one of the most potent Eternals, had a hidden past as an agent for the Soviet Union’s KGB during the 20th century, where he inflicted pain on prisoners of war. However, this all changed when the Celestial Zirann arrived in Polaria, a Siberian city. In an attempt to assassinate Zirann, Druig was instead severely wounded by his own cousin, Ikaris. The Celestials later recovered Druig’s remains. Resurfacing in the 2006 miniseries Eternals, Druig held the position of prime minister for Vorozheika, an autonomous Russian state. At a diplomatic gathering organized by Circe, he orchestrated the kidnapping of scientists. Unfortunately, his mercenaries’ fear caused chaos, leading to Druig losing control over the situation – it was then that he regained consciousness about his true nature as an Eternal.
After discovering his enhanced abilities, Druig made his way back to Vorozheika and orchestrated a violent overthrow. More recently, he’s been on a quest to locate dormant Eternals, reawakening them by modifying their memories. His ultimate aim is to thwart the Dreaming Heavenly and establish himself as the dominant figure among his kin.
In the realm of cinema, I find myself captivated by none other than Eternal named Druig. This character embodies the collective might of his race, harnessing cosmic energy with an unparalleled finesse that makes him a true master of control. With a mere glance, he can hypnotize; from afar, he commands machines. His telepathic abilities allow him to delve into the memories of others and cloak himself invisibly.
Gilgamesh

Played by: Don Lee
Gilgamesh belongs to the race of immortals known as the Eternals, and like other members of his kind, he possesses extraordinary abilities that surpass those of ordinary humans. However, he has honed some of these powers beyond the usual level. The extent of his power is unknown, but his incredible superhuman strength makes him one of the strongest Eternals ever known, second only to Thanos. His strength has been compared to that of Thor, Hercules, and Hulk. As an Eternal, Gilgamesh is virtually indestructible, having not aged since reaching adulthood and being immune to all known diseases. Furthermore, his body is highly resistant to physical harm, enabling him to withstand gunfire from large-caliber weapons, falls from great heights, powerful impacts, and extreme temperatures without sustaining injuries.
To put it another way, there’s a chance that he could sustain permanent or fatal harm by interfering with the mental focus he maintains over his body, a skill that typically enables him to manipulate each of his molecules for regeneration. Similar to other Eternals, he possesses several abilities, such as levitation and flight at high speeds, emitting powerful shockwaves or heat beams from his eyes and hands, and controlling matter. The development of these powers relative to other Eternals isn’t clear, but it’s thought that the first two abilities are around average. Being blind has significantly enhanced his other senses, making him an exceptional hunter and tracker.
Gilgamesh stands out among the Eternals as a highly proficient close-quarters fighter. With an exceptional talent for unarmed combat, he’s mastered many martial arts techniques that originated from ancient Earth civilizations. Often seen donning armor of mysterious material and wielding basic weapons like axes, spears, or maces, Gilgamesh is a formidable force in hand-to-hand battles.
Ikaris

Played by: Richard Madden
In awe, I marvel at Ikaris’ extraordinary life force, fueled by cosmic energy, which grants him an unprecedented control over his physical form and bodily processes – even when he is asleep or unconscious. This unique gift makes him nearly immortal, resistant to diseases and the ravages of aging, and seemingly invincible against conventional harm. Any injury sustained by Ikaris would be swiftly healed, with new tissue regenerating in its place. The cosmic energy within him boosts his metabolism, ensuring he never tires from physical exertion. He possesses an incredible resilience to extreme temperatures, maintaining a steady state through mental focus. Remarkably, Ikaris can levitate at will, manipulating the gravitons around him. Moreover, he can lift others and objects, even those already floating in mid-air.
Ikaris possesses an incredible ability to fly at around 850 miles per hour, a speed that outmatches most other Eternals. He also has low-level psychic abilities, which enable him to read the surface thoughts of beings less powerful than himself. This mental prowess allows him to create illusions to hide his true identity and manipulate atoms and molecules to change the form of objects. However, Ikaris is only a moderate expert in this area, ranked as a second-level adept on a scale of five levels, with the highest level being the most skilled. He can rearrange air molecules to construct an almost impenetrable barrier around himself. Furthermore, he can emit cosmic energy from his eyes or hands in the form of beams and flashes. This cosmic energy, kept in specialized cells within his body, can be utilized as force, heat, light, and potentially other types of electromagnetic energy.
As a passionate moviegoer, I’d put it like this: Ikaris possesses an incredible ability to unleash blasts of concussive force, reaching up to 260 pounds per square inch. His heat rays can reach temperatures as high as 3,000 degrees Fahrenheit – hot enough to liquefy iron. It takes him a minute to heat up to this extreme temperature. Often referred to as ‘death rays’ due to their ability to vaporize solid objects, his heat beams can stretch approximately 200 feet. On a scale of five levels, Ikaris is a fourth-level adept in this discipline. Prolonged use of cosmic energy drains his physical strength for a while, but not his resilience against harm, though it momentarily heightens his sensitivity to pain. He swiftly recovers once the extended energy usage ceases.
Ikaris possesses a mental ability to teleport, yet he tends to avoid it due to its uncomfortable physical effects, much like his fellow Eternals. Moreover, he is capable of transporting others simultaneously with himself.
Kingo

Played by: Kumail Nanjiani
For many centuries, Kingo mastered the art of the samurai in Japan, becoming one of the world’s top-notch swordfighters. Now, he showcases his talents as a dynamic action film star in Japan.
Following the removal of their memories by Sprite, he resurfaced later on, regaining his prominence as a leading figure in Japanese cinema, now functioning not just as an actor but also as a director and producer. Currently, he is engaged in producing a film in San Francisco that features the Blob and is somehow attracted to the Celestial Dreamer.
It’s generally believed that Kingo Sunen possesses all the standard abilities of an Eternal: immortality, superhuman strength, flight, energy projection, and manipulation of matter at a molecular level. Yet, in combat situations, he chooses to adhere to traditional Samurai fighting techniques instead. Kingo wields a sword, crafted by fellow Eternal Phastos, which is capable of slicing through most substances.
Makkari

Played by: Lauren Ridloff
In my latest film critique, I’d like to delve into the captivating character of Makkari, an Eternals member who possesses extraordinary strength, agility, and speed that would put the wind itself to shame. His unique ability allows him to whirl around at breakneck speeds, creating mighty cyclones in his wake. Remarkably, he can scale walls with ease and even traverse water’s surface as if it were solid ground.
However, Makkari’s powers have a price. Overexertion accumulates poisons within his body, making him vulnerable to damage. His obsession with speed, a trait that emerged in the Quasar series, has led him to channel an immense amount of Cosmic Energy into enhancing his running prowess. Regrettably, this focus has cost him the ability to fly and diminished many of his other powers.
In essence, Makkari is a testament to the duality inherent in greatness: he possesses powers beyond mortal comprehension but at the cost of balance and control. This character depth adds an intriguing layer to the Eternals’ narrative, making each appearance from this speedster a thrilling spectacle to behold.
Makkari doesn’t have the typical psychic abilities common among Eternals, such as levitation, energy projection from his eyes, and the ability to rearrange molecules. Instead, he has intentionally altered all of his unique cell clusters to boost his speed and running capabilities. Currently, he can run at nearly the speed of light for extended periods, but his physical strength (while still significantly greater than that of a typical human) has been reduced by half. He also seems unable to emit energy or control light.
Makkari often dons a safety helmet, even though he doesn’t strictly require it. His attire is made from durable synthetic stretch fabric, specifically designed to withstand the intense demands of rapid movement. Makkari possesses impressive mechanical skills and can operate various land and air vehicles competently. He has some background in close-quarters combat, using his superhuman speed as part of his fighting style. He’s also a graduate of the Eternal Higher Education Standard and received advanced training in Speed Techniques.
Phastos

Played by: Brian Tyree Henry
Not much is known regarding Phastos’ past, but it’s clear that he belongs to the third generation of Earth-dwelling Eternals. While his personal motives for staying on Earth remain unknown, some speculate it was in search of a particular individual or artifact. Phastos is notable for being Sigmar the Eternal’s mentor. Through the ages, he has been known by various human names such as Vulcan and Hephaestus. Phastos is an inventive genius, responsible for crafting many of the Eternals’ advanced technological devices. Today, his workshop can be found in Germany, nestled within the Ruhr Valley.
In an alternate reality orchestrated by the Heavenly Dreamer, Sprite caused the Eternals to forget their past lives, transforming Phastos into Philip Stoss, a German automotive engineer. Later discovered and reawakened by Ikaris and Thena, he reappeared in the Deviants’ Saga, teaming up with Virako, Karkas, and Ransak to protect the City of the Eternals. During this time, he assisted Thor, the god, in retrieving a potent cosmic artifact that had been pilfered by Ereshkigal, thereby averting universal destruction. Aside from being a skilled technologist, Philip Stoss is also an accomplished weapons manufacturer with a permanent residence in Germany’s Ruhr Valley.
Phastos belongs to a race known as the Eternals, granting him all the abilities typical of this species. Being everlasting, he’s free from the threat of disease or aging. His healing abilities are exceptional, yet his molecules can be scattered beyond repair if destroyed, leading to his death. He possesses superhuman strength that lets him lift approximately 25 tons. He manipulates cosmic energy, enabling him to fly at speeds close to 900 km/h, create illusions, alter matter, and even teleport. He wields a unique hammer that emits bursts of unidentified energy. In the realm of technology and inventions, he’s a genius.
Sersi
Played by: Gemma Chan
As an Eternal, Sersi possesses the typical abilities of Earth’s Eternals, but she has primarily honed her powers in the area of transmutation. She can manipulate matter using illusion or magic, and her ability to restructure objects at a molecular level is more potent than any other Eternal. The full extent of Sersi’s molecular manipulation capabilities remains unknown. Moreover, Sersi stands alone as a fifth-level master in the art of transmuting matter among all living beings.
Sersi is capable of changing the fundamental composition of any substance, be it animate or inanimate. Yet, she finds it challenging to rearrange subatomic particles. This extraordinary individual boasts a brilliant mind and superhuman physical strength, further enhanced by mentally lifting massive objects. She also has immense endurance, resilience, swiftness, and quick reactions. Sersi’s unique ability allows her to control cosmic energy, boosting her vitality for near-invincibility and eternal life. With this power, she can emit cosmic energy from her eyes or hands as heat, light, or a powerful shockwave, and may possess additional talents.
Sersi possesses an extraordinary resistance to cold, illness, electricity, energy, heat, radiation, and toxic substances. She does not age, and her unique nature allows her to survive only if her atoms remain together. In terms of defense, she has near-invincibility due to mental control over her physical form, making her virtually indestructible and immortal.
One fascinating power Sersi holds is the ability to lift and levitate herself as well as up to seven other individuals, maintaining flight at incredible speeds. She also creates realistic illusions to conceal her own and others’ appearances from human perception. Her powers of teleportation enable her to transport herself and others, although she finds this power uncomfortable and uses it sparingly.
Communication-wise, Sersi can transmit thoughts telepathically, but she is unable to read the minds of Deviants. However, she can exert mental control over Eternals, Deviants, and humans when needed. Additionally, Sersi has the power to manipulate objects with her mind and generate protective force fields for defense.
Similar to all Eternals, Sersi possesses the capacity to unite with the collective consciousness known as the Uni-Mind. With her dance skills refined over centuries, enhanced by her superhuman body, Sersi showcases remarkable agility. Moreover, she’s proven proficient in martial arts, fluency in numerous languages, wrestling, and even fashion design.
Sprite

Played by: Lia McHugh
Just like every Eternal, Sprite possesses an extraordinary ability to manage his life energy and molecular makeup, rendering him nearly invincible. He doesn’t grow older, resists all recognized illnesses, toxins, radiation, and extreme heat or cold. Interestingly, despite his youthful appearance, which he dislikes as it was forced upon him, Sprite is actually hundreds of thousands of years old. This ancient being can harness cosmic energy for bursts of heat or power, levitate himself or others, and produce illusions that trick the senses.
Despite his diminutive stature and childlike physique, he possesses strength that surpasses that of ordinary humans. Due to his unique ability, he can manipulate atoms and molecules at will, enabling him to transform objects in an instant. In fact, he is second only to Sersi when it comes to the art of molecular restructuring; he even created a spacecraft that went from ground level to orbit within seconds.
According to Sprite’s account, it seems that he managed to utilize the Heavenly Dreamer’s abilities to transform into a human form that would have matured into adulthood naturally, had it not been for his demise.
Thena
Played by: Angelina Jolie
Due to being an Eternal, Thena boasts extraordinary physical abilities such as super strength, speed, resilience, endurance, gracefulness, and quick reflexes. She also holds the unique power to control cosmic energy, which enhances her vitality, making her almost indestructible and everlasting. This cosmic energy can be emitted from her eyes or hands in various forms like heat, light, or a powerful force. Additionally, she might possess other extraordinary abilities related to cosmic energy.
Thena possesses complete mental mastery over her physical body, offering her an almost indestructible state and eternal life. Moreover, she can levitate, enabling her to travel at extraordinary speeds through flight. Her psionic powers extend to manipulating the molecular makeup of objects, altering their shape or composition. She is skilled in creating illusions that make her and others appear differently to human perception. Additionally, she can teleport herself and others, and has the power to assemble the Uni-Mind when needed.
Throughout her lifetime, Thena has been both a scholar among the best of humanity and immortals, boasting a vast array of knowledge in various eternal and human disciplines. Moreover, she is an accomplished martial artist, having undergone rigorous training in unarmed combat and mastery over numerous ancient and futuristic weapons. Thena’s attire is armor made of an undisclosed material, and she wields a bow capable of firing energy arrows and an energy spear that can generate intense heat and light around its victims or bombard them with anti-gravitons.
