For the last ten years, Hallmark has become known for creating feel-good, heartwarming Christmas movies perfect for relaxing and enjoying. They’ve also made great strides in showing more diverse stories and actors, particularly with increased representation of African-American characters.
Looking for heartwarming holiday movies with Black leads? There are now many to choose from! I’ve compiled a list of the ten best Black Hallmark Christmas movies, based on their ratings on IMDb. From the first films to feature Black female leads to stories that beautifully blend Christmas and Kwanzaa traditions, this list has something for everyone.
10. ‘Holiday Heritage’ (2022)

IMDb score: 5.9/10
The story follows Ella, who returns home for Christmas hoping to revive both Christmas and Kwanzaa traditions and mend some long-standing family issues. She gets help from her ex-boyfriend, Griffin, and as they work together to create a festive celebration, old feelings begin to resurface.
Here’s why you should watch this movie: In 2022, Hallmark released its first film to celebrate both Christmas and Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa, a holiday celebrated in African-American culture, is rarely featured in movies because Christmas is generally considered more popular. This film beautifully portrays both holidays with a charming and engaging story.
9. ‘A Majestic Christmas’ (2018)

IMDb score: 5.9/10
Nell, a promising young architect, returns to her hometown, Briar Falls, to renovate the historic Majestic Playhouse and turn it into a modern multiplex. While excited about landing this important project, she’s conflicted because the Playhouse holds a special place in the town’s history – it’s been the beloved venue for their annual Twelve Day Christmas festival for years, and its demolition feels like a loss.
Connor, who recently bought the theater, doesn’t have much experience with Christmas. Nell is hoping that by showing him how fun the annual Festival is, she can convince him to approve the planned updates to the Playhouse.
This movie is special on multiple levels. Not only does it tell the story of a town’s past, but it made history as one of the first Hallmark movies to star a Black actress in the lead role. Beyond that, it’s a genuinely touching and heartwarming film that perfectly captures the magic of Christmas.
8. ‘Memories of Christmas’ (2018)

IMDb score: 6.0/10
Okay, so this movie centers around Noelle, a woman who’s built a successful career but has somehow lost her Christmas spirit. When her mom—who was a total Christmas icon in their town—passes away, Noelle goes back home to sell the family house. That’s where she meets Dave, a really talented decorator her mom hired every year to create this incredible Christmas display. It’s a sweet setup, and I’m already curious to see how their stories connect!
He asks Noelle if he can complete the work, and though she’s hesitant at first, she gradually softens as the magic of Christmas begins to affect her. She discovers a newfound love, both for the season and for who she is.
You should definitely watch this movie because it starred the first African American woman to lead a Hallmark film! While the story – about someone returning home and rediscovering what matters – is familiar, it’s still a heartwarming and engaging watch.
7. ‘Christmas Comes Twice’ (2020)

IMDb score: 6.1/10
Cheryl feels unfulfilled with the choices she’s made in the last five years. She prioritized her career, and now finds herself in a job she doesn’t love, missing the chance at a relationship. Returning home for Christmas, she dreams of being able to rewind time and start over. Surprisingly, her wish actually comes true!
If you’re looking for a heartwarming holiday movie, Tamera Mowry-Housley is fantastic in this one! The story takes a unique approach, showing us that it’s never too late to overcome past mistakes.
6. ‘Christmas Everlasting’ (2018)

IMDb score: 6.3/10
Lucy is a New York lawyer on the verge of becoming a partner. But just before the New Year, she receives devastating news: her older sister, Alice, who had special needs, has passed away. Lucy is heartbroken, especially because she didn’t get a chance to answer Alice’s last phone call.
Alice’s lawyer, Peter – who used to date Lucy in high school – shared Alice’s will with her. The will stated Lucy would only inherit the family home if she spent 30 days living there during the holiday season. Those 30 days could really change Lucy’s life.
‘Christmas Everlasting’ is a lovely film that’s both sweet and sad. While the story of someone returning home for the holidays isn’t new, it’s surprisingly complex and engaging, with just the right amount of Christmas cheer and romance. It’s perfect for watching during the holiday season.
5. ‘A Christmas Miracle’ (2019)

IMDb score: 6.4/10
Emma is a talented journalist who’s devastated when her boss takes credit for her big story idea. As Christmas approaches, she and her son set out to find a heartwarming story to write, and she finds herself spending a lot of time with a charming photographer from work—possibly more than just as colleagues…
Tamera Mowry-Housley is back in a new Christmas movie that I really enjoyed! The actors are great, and the story offers a fresh take compared to typical Hallmark Christmas films.
4. ‘Inventing the Christmas Prince’ (2022)

IMDb score: 6.6/10
Shelby used to tell her daughter stories about a Christmas prince she’d one day marry. Now, Shelby is planning to leave a job she dislikes, but her daughter believes Shelby’s boss, Evan, is actually the prince from her childhood stories.
I highly recommend this Tamera Mowry-Housley movie – it’s my personal favorite on the list! It’s a fun, quirky story with a light and humorous tone, and it also offers a meaningful message about how your outlook can change everything.
3. ‘Our Christmas Journey’ (2021)

IMDb score: 6.6/10
I’m really drawn to this story about Lena, a mom raising a teenage son with autism. It follows her as she navigates a tough time around Christmas, and it looks like she might find a little romance along the way. It feels very real and relatable – a mom trying to balance everything and maybe, just maybe, open her heart again.
‘Our Christmas Journey’ is a heartwarming example of Hallmark’s commitment to inclusive storytelling. As someone with a family member on the autism spectrum, I appreciate how the movie portrays the challenges faced by single parents in similar situations. It’s a truly beautiful film and easily deserves its high praise, regardless of its IMDb rating.
2. ‘The Holiday Stocking’ (2022)

IMDb score: 6.7/10
R.J. is a newly-made angel sent back to Earth with a special mission: to help his estranged sisters reconcile. They’ve been feuding for years, and he appears as a stranger to try and bring them back together. He encourages them to restart a beloved family tradition, ‘The Holiday Stocking,’ hoping it will inspire kindness and ultimately lead to their reunion during the Christmas season.
I truly believe this movie will touch your heart because it beautifully shows how important family is. It’s a really emotional and heartwarming story, but it also has plenty of funny moments, making it the ideal Christmas film to enjoy with everyone!
1. ‘The Christmas Doctor’ (2020)

IMDb score: 6.9/10
Dr. Zoey travels from town to town, providing medical care in people’s homes. While working in Willowbrook, she not only treats a patient, but also unexpectedly falls in love.
If you’re looking for a heartwarming Christmas movie, ‘The Christmas Doctor’ is a great choice! It’s the highest-rated Black Hallmark Christmas film, and it’s full of romance, Christmas cheer, and is just a feel-good story.
