As a dedicated follower of Lily Collins‘ career, I must say her journey from Growing Pains to Emily in Paris is nothing short of remarkable. With each role she takes on, she demonstrates an uncanny ability to immerse herself in her characters, bringing them to life with an authenticity that leaves audiences captivated.
Lily Collins, who is both British and American and has modeling skills too, was born on the 18th of March, 1989, in Guildford, England. Raised in Los Angeles, she started her acting journey as a child on the television show Growing Pains. Later, Lily made her big-screen debut in The Blind Side (2009), portraying Sandra Bullock’s character’s daughter.
As a devoted admirer, I can confidently say that her captivating portrayal in the widely acclaimed Netflix series Emily in Paris significantly boosted her recognition. Known for her roles in films such as To the Bone and television series like Les Misérables, Collins’s acting prowess and screen charisma have garnered accolades from both critics and viewers. Here are my top ten recommendations of her movies and shows that should be on your must-watch list:
1. The English Teacher
In the movie “The English Teacher,” Julianne Moore plays Linda Sinclair, a high school teacher who reconnects with her ex-student Jason (Michael Angarano). After facing difficulties as a playwright in New York, Jason goes back home, where Linda supports him in his new play. As they collaborate, a romantic relationship blossoms between them. However, complications arise when Jason starts having feelings for the lead actress in the play, Halle (Lily Collins), making things more challenging.
2. Windfall
In the movie Windfall, Jason Segel takes on the role of a thief who breaks into a holiday home belonging to a tech CEO (Jesse Plemons) and his wife (Lily Collins). To his astonishment, the CEO and his spouse appear unexpectedly. Although the burglar is after half a million dollars, the CEO promises to give him the money the following day. As the night unfolds, they all navigate this tricky predicament. Lily Collins delivers a compelling performance, making her character more complex as she portrays a concerned and irritated wife. Despite some weaknesses in the film, Collins’ portrayal of an otherwise ordinary character creates an air of mystery.
3. To the Bone
20-year-old Ellen (Lily Collins), a young woman battling anorexia, comes back home from incomplete treatment. Her stepmother, Susan, registers her for a unique residential program led by Dr. William Beckham, a doctor with unconventional methods. After being convinced by her sister Kelly, Ellen agrees to join this program, now going by the name Eli. At the group home, Eli encounters individuals dealing with diverse eating disorders. As Eli progresses, she comprehends the gravity of her situation and starts to grasp the transformations necessary for recovery, although the road ahead is tough.
4. Mirror Mirror
In this movie, Collins portrays a young princess in Tarsem Singh’s Snow White. Her wicked stepmother usurps control of the kingdom and banishes her. The queen plans to have Snow White executed, but instead, she is spared. Snow White finds sanctuary with a group of seven outlaw dwarves who teach her combat skills. With their help, she learns how to stand up against the malicious queen. Eventually, Snow White manages to vanquish the queen and reclaim her kingdom.
5. Emily in Paris
Emily Cooper, a youthful resident from the United States, is employed at a marketing company based in Chicago. As Madeline, Emily’s boss, turns down an opportunity in Paris due to pregnancy-related reasons, she extends it to Emily instead. Adapting to Parisian lifestyle proves challenging for Emily, especially as she navigates through its unique cultural nuances.
Yet, the charm of Gabriel, her neighbor, along with Ashley and Camille, adds positivity to her life. In contrast, Emily’s cheerful demeanor at work annoys her new supervisor, Sylvie, as well as colleagues Julien and Luc. Nevertheless, Emily swiftly proves to be a valuable asset to the team.
6. Stuck in Love
In this heartfelt blend of comedy and drama, Greg Kinnear portrays Bill, a successful author dealing with his ex-wife’s new relationship. Their children, Samantha (played by Lily Collins) and Rusty, share a passion for writing. While they both collaborated on a book with Bill, it’s Samantha’s solo work that’s edging closer to publication. After the divorce, her bond with her mother was cut off. The bitter experiences she’s had have left Samantha skeptical about love. In the meantime, Rusty continues to chase his writing dreams.
7. Okja
In this movie, a girl named Mija (An Seo Hyun) and her beloved super-sized pig, Okja, have spent the last ten years living contentedly in South Korea. However, their tranquil life is shattered when the Mirando Corporation, under the leadership of CEO Lucy Mirando (Tilda Swinton) and zoologist Johnny Wilcox (Jake Gyllenhaal), decides to move Okja from South Korea to New York City. Lucy extends an invitation for Mija to see Okja, but instead uses the pig for financial gain. Determined to save Okja, Mija enlists the aid of ALF members Jay (Paul Dano) and Red (Lily Collins), aiming to retrieve Okja and bring her back to their home in South Korea.
8. The Blind Side
Michael Oher, previously a homeless teenager with a challenging background, gets welcomed into the Tuohy household, which includes Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock), Sean Tuohy (Tim McGraw), their daughter Collins, and son Sean “S.J.” Jr. Due to his mother’s addiction issues and an absent father, Michael lacked proper schooling and skills.
As I navigate through life, I am fortunate to be under the loving care of Leigh and Sean, who act as my guardians, providing support in every aspect. Football has always been a significant part of my life, and with my robust physique, I find myself well-suited for the offensive tackle position. Under the tutelage of Tuohys, my football career looks promising, with a future shining brightly on the field.
9. Love, Rosie
In this poignant drama-comedy, Collins portrays Rosie, a young woman whose relationship with Alex (played by Sam Claflin) becomes intricate following their emotional kiss on her eighteenth birthday. Due to an unplanned pregnancy, Alex is compelled to venture alone when their shared dream of studying together in the U.S. falls apart. As Rosie grapples with her new role as a mother, Alex thrives and forges fresh connections in America. Over time, Rosie discerns that they could be more than just friends; however, their circumstances are never propitious for such a relationship to flourish.
10. The Last Tycoon
As a devoted admirer, I grace the small screen for the very first time in a recurring role within the gripping Amazon Prime Video miniseries, The Last Tycoon – a captivating production that brings to life F. Scott Fitzgerald’s last, uncompleted literary masterpiece.
The show is based in 1930s Tinseltown and centers around Monroe Stahr, a dynamic up-and-coming producer employed by studio chief Pat Brady. Monroe grapples with striking a balance between his career and personal life, but matters become even more intricate when he finds himself entwined with Pat’s daughter, Cecile.
