As a devoted fan who has been following the Constantine saga since its debut in 2005, I cannot help but feel a mix of excitement and apprehension as the long-awaited sequel inches closer to becoming a reality. With the recent developments at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, I find myself eagerly awaiting updates on the script progress from producers Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Akiva Goldsman.
At this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Steve Weintraub of Collider led a lively panel discussion with producers Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Akiva Goldsman about the upcoming Constantine sequel. Fans were excited to hear updates on the project, and the producers shared valuable insights into its development, including the current status of the script.
Progress of script and challenges
When inquired about the progress of the script, Goldsman shared, “It’s moving along nicely. I’m currently writing a new Constantine script. It’s shaping up well, and I aim to finish it for my partners shortly.” As for how long he has been working on it, he joked, “Oh, for quite some time now.”
When asked about the potential for an R-rated script for Constantine, Goldsman was vague and responded, “I’m unable to confirm that. However, I am indeed working on a Constantine script.”
Bonaventura shared an intriguing detail about the initial production process of the first film. He described the challenge of obtaining approval from anti-smoking executives for a movie featuring a smoker as the lead character. This seemed like an insurmountable task, but he persisted and presented it as an anti-smoking project, despite his colleagues finding the idea amusing. Surprisingly, he was successful in securing the necessary funding for this unconventional project.
Keanu Reeves and franchise future
Discussions about creating a sequel to the original film have been ongoing for several years. Keanu Reeves, who previously starred in it, has shown interest in reprising his role. At the John Wick: Chapter 4 press event, Reeves shared with Weintraub that there were plans to reassess the possibility of making a Constantine film with him involved, so let’s keep our fingers crossed!
Since the initial film’s release, there have been indications that Francis Lawrence, its director, remains committed to keeping part two just as R-rated as he intends. Progress has been made in this regard, suggesting that even with numerous challenges, the path towards a seamless production might be possible.
Goldsman highlighted how Reeves’ passion saved the project. He recalled an instance where Reeves expressed his eagerness during a Stephen Colbert show interview to reprise his character. With this newfound excitement from both the actor and the studio, it’s evident that there’s a chance for the sequel to move forward.
Public vs. critical reception
1. The first Constantine movie initially received unfavorable reviews from major critics. For instance, Roger Ebert assigned it only one-and-a-half stars, pointing out its lack of originality and occasionally absurd storylines. However, despite these negative criticisms, the film has gained a cult following over time, with viewers continuing to appreciate Keanu Reeves’ portrayal as a demonologist.
1. The synopsis for Constantine 2 implies that John Constantine, a supernatural exorcist, will make his return. His mission: to save himself from damnation while thwarting demons from invading Earth. Peter Stormare joins the cast as Lucifer, along with Reeves, and Francis Lawrence continues to direct this thrilling follow-up that fans are eagerly anticipating.
