As a devoted fan of both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, I can only imagine the heartwarming scene that unfolded when Reynolds stumbled upon Jackman bringing The Greatest Showman to life for his children. The image of Jackman, a beloved actor and father figure, engaging with his kids in such an immersive way is truly unforgettable.
In an interview on SiriusXM last Friday, July 19, Ryan Reynolds recounted a touching story to host and former PEOPLE editor-in-chief Jess Cagle. He confessed that he unexpectedly visited the home of his friend and acting colleague, Hugh Jackman from Deadpool and Wolverine, and discovered him rehearsing songs from The Greatest Showman with his own kids.
In response to Cagle’s question regarding the connection between the 2017 musical film and their upcoming project, Jackman playfully quipped that it’s a frequent topic, an assertion Reynolds endorsed. Reynolds then admitted, “You know what? You’re not entirely off base. My kids watch The Greatest Showman regularly.” Betty James Inez is the child of Jackman and Blake Lively.
An unforgettable performance
Reynolds shared this as an actual event, with no exaggeration involved. He described entering his living room to find Jackman joining his children in watching and acting out scenes from “The Greatest Showman.” “I walked in, I heard ‘The Greatest Showman’ playing, turned the corner, and there was my kids enjoying the movie and singing along,” Reynolds explained. “And there was Hugh, right in the midst of it all, playfully participating like a big kid.”
Reynolds expressed it as one of the most heart-wrenchingly lovely sights he had ever witnessed, playfully commenting that he handed in his “dad membership card” afterwards. Admitteredly, this experience left him completely shattered as a father, knowing that nothing he would accomplish could compare to what Hugh did for his children. “Therefore,” he joked, “I’ve begun a new life in a different country with a hidden family.”
Based on my understanding of the given dialogue between Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, it seems that there was a past financial transaction where Jackman bought something expensive using Reynold’s account, and he jokingly referred to the payments made after the purchase as “residuals.” Reynolds seemed relieved and grateful for Jackman’s help in keeping him from making this expense in the past.
Parenting wisdom from the set
During the Deadpool & Wolverine press tour, Reynolds discussed his experiences as a father and shared some valuable insights he gained from director Shawn Levy. In an interview for PEOPLE’s June cover story, Reynolds recounted that Levy had shared a profound message with him which has stayed with him ever since. Essentially, most people focus on their successes. However, according to Levy, it’s important for children to understand that even adults experience losses.
In his opinion, Reynolds believed it was vital for children to understand that they don’t always get what they desire. He emphasized the importance of helping them see that even after putting in great effort, things might not turn out as planned. On those days when things go awry, despite hearing words of praise like “Oh Dad did great,” Reynolds stresses the significance of this lesson: “You lose more than you gain.”
Deadpool & Wolverine will be released on July 26.
