As a lifestyle expert with a keen interest in both pop culture and dragons, I must say that House of The Dragon has truly captivated my imagination. Having studied various species of dragons throughout history, I can confidently say that Vhagar is not to be trifled with.
As an ardent fan, I was absolutely thrilled in the seventh episode of House of The Dragon Season 2, titled “The Red Sowing”. In this breathtaking installment, the scene unfolds where Aemond Targaryen, my heart races every time I mention his name, stumbles upon his sister Rhaenyra’s latest additions to their dragon family: Seasmoke, Silverwing, and Vermithor. The first two dragons seemed like easy prey for Aemond and Vhagar, but boy, did Vermithor change the game! This dragon gave my beloved Aemond quite a challenge, making me hold my breath in anticipation of their encounter.
As an ardent fan, I can’t help but marvel at the central role House of the Dragon has given to Vhagar, the grand dame of dragons, the oldest and largest in existence. Her victories for the Greens are nothing short of spectacular! Yet, with Hugh Hammer throwing his weight behind Vermithor, the second-largest dragon, it seems Aemond might be facing a tough battle.
Vhagar has more experience in battles than Vermithor
As a lifestyle expert, I might rephrase this passage as follows: In the realm of fear-inspiring beasts, few can rival Vhagar and Vermithor. Vhagar, however, holds a unique terror due to her incredible power – she could squash knights underfoot and melt armor with ease. On the other hand, Vermithor, though massive and intimidating, doesn’t carry the same chilling image as Vhagar in the stories I’ve read. In fact, Tyrion Lannister once joked that even a horse could outrun her by diving down her throat!
Named the Bronze Fury for its bronze-colored wings and brutal nature, Vhagar was involved in the First Dornish War and Visenya’s efforts to put Maegor the Cruel on the throne. In a later conflict, the Fourth Dornish War, it was Baelon Targaryen who rode Vhagar.

At present, in the ongoing storyline of House of the Dragon, Vhagar has engaged in more skirmishes and combats than Vermithor. She is responsible for the demise of Lucerys Velaryon and his dragon Arrax, as well as defeating Meleys and Sunfyre. This has earned Vhagar a formidable reputation that borders on being indestructible. While Vermithor may inspire fear, his extended absence from Dragonstone for numerous years diminishes his status as an experienced battle-hardened dragon like Vhagar.
Vermithor is younger than Vhagar
Although Vhagar emerged victorious during their initial encounter, it maintains an edge over Vermithor due to its age. In George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, dragons can expand without bounds if they are fed generously and granted freedom beyond the Dragonpit. However, persistent growth might result in a dilemma known as a catch-22, as demonstrated with Balerion, Aegon the Conqueror’s dragon, who grew so large that it could no longer fly on its own.
King Viserys I Targaryen, in his later years, found it difficult to ride Balerion, his dragon, due to his advancing age and diminished strength. Vhagar, a dragon with a slow gait and battle scars marring her wing membranes, was finding it increasingly tough to rise into the sky and maintain direction. Aemond, her rider, often had to guide her movements by adjusting the reins and tugging her in a new direction, as Vhagar was approaching the twilight of her life and needed to settle down in the fields instead.
Vermithor, being 86 years younger than Vhagar, maintains the vigor of youth, enabling him and Hugh to engage in combat without growing weary. While age might make dragons more prone to disobedience, Vhagar, a battle-hardened dragon, is stubborn when it comes to conflict. She tends to defy commands when her rider holds back, as she’s not accustomed to retreating from a fight.
In a hypothetical confrontation between Vhagar and Vermithor, both dragons present unique challenges. While Vhagar might misbehave again under Aemond’s command, granting her the liberty to potentially overpower Vermithor, her impulsiveness and bloodlust could also make her vulnerable to sneak attacks. In contrast, Vermithor has demonstrated a readiness to follow commands from Targaryens he isn’t bonded to, provided they use the right approach. If there were a dragon easier to control between the two, it would likely be Vermithor.

Vhagar is stronger than Vermithor
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at the mighty beasts that rule the skies – Vhagar and Vermithor. Age has taken its toll on Vhagar, making her less agile in combat, but let me tell you, she still packs a punch that surpasses Vermithor. Though he’s faster, more obedient, and slightly smaller, Vhagar holds the upper hand.
In a battle against Vhagar, swiftness and covertness are indispensable, regardless of the dragon’s size. However, Vermithor, though swift, is not known for his stealth. This could be due to their riders – Aemond, who has been on Vhagar for over a decade under the tutelage of master dragonkeepers, and Hugh, who has had only one ride on Vermithor and lacks proficiency in High Valyrian. The likely result of the fight between Aemond and Hugh is predictable.
