As a dedicated fan of Glen Powell’s acting career and having closely followed his journey in Hollywood, I find it fascinating how his real-life experiences have influenced his role in “Twisters.” While watching the movie last weekend, I was captivated by the story of Owen’s encounter with a tornado as a child. It added depth to his character and explained his obsession with chasing storms.
Last weekend, Twisters, an apocalyptic movie inspired by the 1996 film of the same name, became a box office sensation. Contrary to popular belief, Powell is not similar to his character, Tyler Owens, who is portrayed as a rebellious and unpredictable YouTuber known as Tornado Wrangler. Surprisingly, an anecdote from Powell’s childhood was included in the film, perfectly aligning with Tyler’s persona.
Glen Powell’s real childhood story is in Twisters
During a storm-calming procedure, Ownens and Kate (played by Daisy Edgar-Jones) work as a team. Initially, their contrasting natures—Owen, an impassioned YouTuber, and Kate, a dedicated scientist—require some effort to mesh comfortably.
I used to think that his laid-back demeanor and large fan base indicated that he was only in this line of work for the limelight. But then, during a conversation with him, Owen surprised me by recounting a story from his past. He explained that as a child, an encounter with a tornado while staying with his aunt sparked his fascination with storms. This revelation made me realize that there was more depth to him than I had initially assumed.
Previously, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Powell spoke about a relatable incident. During May 1997, a devastating tornado struck Jarrell, Texas, where Powell and his family were living. Tragically, this tornado took the lives of 27 people, making it one of the deadliest in Texas history despite Powell and his loved ones managing to make it through the storm.
Why was Powell’s story a perfect fit for his character?
Despite being a distressing event for the actor, the tale skillfully depicted why Tyler felt compelled to manage tornadoes in his later years. Powell reminisces about seeking solace from his aunt during this experience, a detail mirrored in his character’s dialogue. This missing piece of the puzzle seamlessly enhanced Owen’s complex portrayal.
It’s intriguing that director Lee Isaac Chung had encounters with tornados in his childhood years in Arkansas. This background makes him an ideal choice to helm the production of the end-of-the-world film. As stated in the synopsis, a retired meteorologist and former tornado chaser is encouraged to come back to Oklahoma for collaboration with a fresh team and advanced technologies.
Twisters is currently in theaters.
