As a dedicated follower of world cinema and someone who has spent countless hours delving into the intricacies of religious institutions through film, I am beyond excited for Edward Berger’s new thriller “Conclave.” The director’s Oscar-winning work on “All Quiet on the Western Front” showcased his mastery of storytelling and ability to tackle complex themes. With “Conclave,” he shifts gears to a thrilling exploration of the Catholic Church and its inner workings.
Following his victories at the Oscars and BAFTAs for his anti-war film “All Quiet on the Western Front,” director Edward Berger is now planning a change in genre. Instead of continuing with dramatic films, he’s moving towards making a thriller titled “Conclave.” This project is an adaptation of Robert Harris’ popular novel and features Ralph Fiennes portraying Cardinal Lawrence, who is tasked with selecting a new Pope after the current one passes away.
Conclave Trailer: Ralph Fiennes deals with conspiracies and hidden secrets
As a film critic with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve seen my fair share of trailers that promise grandeur and intrigue, but few have managed to pique my interest quite like this one. The first trailer for the upcoming film, set in the hallowed halls of the Vatican, leaves me breathless with its stunning visuals. Having visited Rome’s Cinecittà studios myself, I can attest to their reputation for creating breathtaking sets, and this trailer does not disappoint.
In the article from Variety, Tucci’s character, Cardinal Bellini, warns that those coveting the papacy pose the greatest danger. Ralph Fiennes portrays Cardinal Lawrence, who presides over this ancient and clandestine procedure. As depicted in the movie’s synopsis, when the Church’s leading figures assemble at the Vatican, Lawrence finds himself embroiled in a conspiracy and discovers a hidden truth that could significantly rock the Church’s foundations.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d describe it in this way: I’ve had the privilege of delving into one of the most enigmatic and time-honored traditions known to humanity – the selection of a new Pope. When the unexpected happened and we lost our revered leader, I found myself entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing this clandestine process.
When the top Catholic Church authorities have convened in the Vatican and are in closed-door meetings, Lawrence unexpectedly uncovers a hidden scheme that has the potential to drastically alter the Church’s fundamentals.
In the preview, Cardinal Lawrence ponders over the weighty task of guiding the Cardinals, an role he hadn’t foreseen. The movie is filled with excitement, featuring power-hungry individuals and developing plots, as Cardinal Lawrence contemplates his choice.

Edward Berger, the Academy Award-winning director of “All Quiet on the Western Front,” helms the production. Peter Straughan, recognized for his work on “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy,” pens the screenplay. Volker Bertelmann, who previously collaborated with Berger, provides the film’s score. Stéphane Fontaine handles the cinematography, and Suzie Davies is responsible for the production design.
In the ensemble, we have Sergio Castellitto portraying Cardinal Tedesco, Lucian Msamati bringing Cardinal Adeyemi to life, Brian F. O’Byrne interpreting the role of O’Malley, and Carlos Diez joining the cast.
The film “Conclave” will have a restricted release in cinemas starting November 1, followed by a wider distribution on November 8. There are also plans for extra showings at autumn film festivals.
