Backstreet Boys Star AJ McLean Reveals Dark Days of D*ug Addiction; Admits ‘Dodging a Bullet’

AJ McLean, a member of the Backstreet Boys, spoke candidly about his struggles with substance abuse during an episode of The Lulu Podcast: Turning Points. On the show, he revealed that although things could have taken a turn for the worse, he managed to “avoid a serious problem” amidst the fentanyl crisis by taking timely action.

During our chat with the podcast host, the artist shared that they were fortunate enough to avoid a significant danger since the fentanyl crisis wasn’t as widespread as it is now, although it was becoming an issue; it was present but not widely recognized like it is today.

Three and a half years ago, a pivotal moment occurred for me. I was performing in Miami with a friend, and afterwards, we went out. That night, I let loose significantly, which ultimately served as my second opportunity at recovery.

As an ardent admirer, let me recount the tale that McLean spun: he confessed to succumbing to alcohol, which inadvertently led him back to drug use. Yet, just a few days later, the artist returned home, seemingly attempting to mend his image. In his own words, “I gulped down an ocean of coffee and even tried breath mints, hoping to mask the aftermath.

The singer admitted, “However, my wife was already aware and had been patiently waiting for my honesty, which had long been a struggle for me – admitting the truth to anyone due to my efforts to keep things going. Unfortunately, as one might expect, it eventually didn’t work out.” McLean subsequently separated from his wife after 13 years of marriage and sharing two daughters together.

The Missing You crooner revealed that it was his daughter who led him to quit d*ugs.

AJ admitted that he had hit rock bottom, but is glad to have come out of it better.
